It is a great quality and it fits perfectly in GB where the stadium is always filled and football is the only Decider.

Other teams don't have that luxury and are subject to the whining of their small-brained fans and the cacophony of the trumpet-tongued media

That was my take as well- Typical stuff that is a mile wide an an inch deep.

But I will acknowledge he is writing for the masses and not well-informed Packer fans

Andrew Brandt's stuff is coming tomorrow, we may get a few more nuggets in that one

Exactly!  Not only did TT know he wanted Rodgers if available, he had a sense of what positions the other teams would be taking and was prepared to pull the trigger rather than being surprised by good fortune.

β€œThree or four days before the [2005] draft,” Thompson says, β€œwe’re doing our research, going down the board, and I’m looking, and I think, β€˜None of these teams are taking a quarterback.’ I couldn’t find one, after San Francisco. We hadn’t really paid attention to Rodgers because we just figured he’d be gone. Plus, we didn’t have that big a need there, obviously. So I just buried myself and went to look at all the Rodgers tapeβ€”from games, from the combine, from his pro day. After a couple of days I just felt he was too good to pass. So I said, β€˜If he falls to us, we’re taking him.’”

I'm with you, Chilli. Can't beat old school.

As for Peppers, Thompson knew he needed a bookend rush threat for Clay Matthews this season. He knew Peppers had played well against Green Bay over the years, and he felt that, at 34, Peppers still had enough left to come in and play well. And there was one other thing: Peppers is almost as private a man as Thompson. β€œIn this day and age of huge publicity and player egos and media leaks,” Thompson says, β€œthat was a pretty extraordinary negotiation. We made the deal [three years, $27 million], and he and his agent flew in. He took the physical, we shook hands, signed, and the deal was done. We don’t announce it right away, and two days later, when we announce it, it was a surprise to everyone. I was thinking, I love this

from the article above - love it:

I especially remember our team psychologist, who would have annual meetings with all employees, emerging from a meeting with Ted clearly discouraged and agitated, saying in a huff, β€œI’ve been doing this for 20 years, and I’ve never seen someone as closed and emotionally unavailable in my life!”

More info about TT's contract extension.

http://www.nfl.com/news/story/...campaign=Twitter_atl

Green Bay Packers general manager Ted Thompson signed an extension earlier in the offseason, but at the time neither he nor the team disclosed any terms or details.

However, NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport on Thursday reported that Thompson's extension is for three additional seasons, according to three sources briefed on the situation. Since the general manager still has two years left on his current deal, he will continue running the team through the 2018 season.

Just because some of his picks have not quite developed as  he planned does not make him a dolt.  Some are still young, or have been injured and still have a chance.  I trust in TT but it certainly is not unfair to say that the D he has assembled and has tried to improve over the last few yrs has in fact improved.....yet.   I trust it can and will.

And TT got lucky that Rodgers did fall to him, as I have stated before.

And you forgot to add that he was wise enough to take him when every other team passed and he had Bert at QB.  Sure it just slipped your mind.

No it did not slip my mind, it is the fact of TT admitting that he got lucky AR fell to him that is interesting.

Made TT's career in Green Bay I'd say, and MM's too. Now TT has done a much better job than Ron Wolf did in putting good offensive personnel around the respective franchise QB. But TT has to fix this defense somehow, or they will waste the prime of AR. 2010 was magical with what, 15, 16 guys on IR. But that defense since.........

Excal.... if TT simply got lucky that Rodgers was available, then how was he able to predict it?  Luck suggests chance but TT was prepared for it because it wasn't simply chance.  Now if you're blaming him because he couldn't CONTROL who the other GMs picked, well that's just daft.  But he did expect Rodgers to be available and was prepared to pull the trigger.  Next time you selectively quote someone's post, at least make sure you include the important bits.

Yup, Rodgers did fall to TT but he was ready for it to happen. Here's a list of QBs who started games in 2004 for the 23 draft spots ahead of GB. Excal, would you have predicted Rodgers would still be there after looking at this list? Go ahead, see any HOFers? In the future probably Brees, but that's it.

1. 49ers (T. Rattay, K. Dorsey; drafted Alex Smith)

2. Dolphins (AJ Feeley, J. Fiedler, S. Rosenfels)

3. Browns (J. Garcia, K. Holcomb, L. McCown)

4. Bears (C. Krenzel, C. Hutchinson, J. Quinn, R. Grossman)

5. Bucs (Br. Griese, B. Johnson, C. Simms)

6. Titans (S. McNair, B. Volek)

7. Vikings (Culpepper)

8. Cards (J. McCown, S. King, J. Navarre)

9. Washington (M. Brunell, P. Ramsey)

10. Lions (J. Harrington)

11. Dallas (V. Testaverde, D. Henson)

12. San Diego (D. Brees, D. Flutie)

13. Saints (A. Brooks)

14. Carolina (J. Delhomme)

15. Chiefs (T. Green)

16. Texans (D. Carr)

17. Bengals (C. Palmer, J. Kitna)

18. Vikings

19. Rams (M. Bulger, C. Chandler)

20. Dallas (we always remember MN, but Dallas also passed over AR twice)

21. Jags (B. Leftwich, D. Garrard)

22. Ravens (K. Boller)

23. Raiders (K. Collins, R. Gannon)

Bottom line is, TT has some holes in his game (MLB for sure) but there's only a couple teams who wouldn't come knocking on his door if he left GB. That makes him pretty smert.
