Yes, "Next Man Up" has its limits.  The salary cap and roster rules place artificial limitations on roster composition.  Some teams load up on starting talent, but burn through their salary cap limiting the amount of depth in the roster.  Other teams focus on one side of the ball trying to create a "super" offense or defense which, in theory, offsets the weaker side.  Finally, other teams, like the Packers, draft and develop focusing on taking the best players available and locking up core players.

The success the Packers have had over the past several years proves "draft and develop" works, as long as you have a talented coaching staff.  This strategy gives "next man up" the best chance of success because you should have depth across the board.  The NFL season is a war of attrition where the teams that best handle adversity are the teams that are consistently successful.  This adversity comes from injuries, player misconduct, and performance issues.  The more options you have relative to other teams in the league, the better off you are over the long run.

Tolzien did just fine today.  He was on the practice squad a week ago and barely took any reps in practice.  The defense has played horribly the past couple of weeks, but they fact that we do have depth gives us flexibility to make changes in the lineup if necessary.

No team can survive massive numbers of injuries, and every team will experience injuries of some sort or another.  But if you focus on building depth throughout your roster, you give yourself the best chance of success.

A.J. Hawk was the 5th overall pick, The most dynamic defensive player the Packers have had in the last 10 years was a reluctant FA nobody else wanted, Charles Woodson. Ryan Pickett has been a mainstay. Justin Harrell is watching games with us. Lawrence Guy is flourishing elsewhere. There is no one way to do it. The GM is trying to make the team better and, frankly, I prefer going with younger player. If they show promise. Do MD Jennings and Jerrell(sp?) Mcmillian show promise? How does Derek Sherrod differ from Desmond Bishop as oft injured? Other than there is mounting evidence he could be another 1st round bust?

The Younger set of Packer fans are now finding out what us older fans went through for thirty years, wondering if this would be a Sunday we could smile again after a rare win.if you think this defense is playing bad you should have seen the Lions quarterback Greg Landry score from his own 20 on a QUARTERBACK SNEAK!at least this little losing streak is only temperary, back then it was the norm.

I remember that.  An opening day 40-0 massacre.

As a kid passionately looking forward to a good season, that was one of the worst.

Major THUD!

Just looked it up.  It was 1970.  They were 4-2 after 6 games.  Lost 6 of their last 8, including the finale - 20-0 against the Lions.
