Lots of threads with tweets, video and what-not. Didn't want to hijack one of those with this...

Gotta say, even though it's just one snap

Excites me. Bakhtiari is a big dude...makes CM3 look small.

Now, I expect CM3 to get the better of him 9 out of 10 times, but I think this bodes well...maybe this kid is a developmental RT prospect who makes it into the 2 deep, gets some reps over the season and by next year is ready to slide in as a starter.

Definitely an athletic guy, who played on probably the worst D-1 football team in America last year.

Wait and see... didn't look (to me) like Clay really dropped his shoulder like he is known to do when he flies past the T. Did like the constant movement with Bakhtiari's feet and hands though.

Packers rookie tackle David Bakhtiari in mix for playing time

by Mike Spofford on Monday, July 29th, 2013

On his first day in pads as an NFL offensive lineman on Sunday, lining up for his first one-on-one rep in the pass-rush/pass-blocking drill, David Bakhtiari saw Clay Matthews sizing him up.

“I knew it was him,” Bakhtiari said of one of the league’s premier pass rushers. “It was just, I’ll see what I’ve got.”

Turns out Bakhtiari had plenty. Playing left tackle on this particular snap, he shot to the left out of his stance to protect the edge and then braced himself for Matthews’ bull rush.

Amidst the repeated barks of “Get him, rook!” from Offensive Line Coach James Campen, which Bakhtiari said he didn’t even hear, the fourth-round pick from Colorado did his job. Matthews didn’t get to the spot that marks the imaginary quarterback in the drill. The “rook” had won.

The victory highlighted an impressive first day in pads for Bakhtiari. Flipping back and forth between left and right tackle, he won his other reps against younger pass rushers, too.

“I pretty much got out all my jitters in OTAs, so I wasn’t really worried even at the first practice, because I got a sense of what certain guys do and don’t do,” he said. “I was pretty comfortable.”

He credits Matthews for helping with that. The two actually got to know each other before Bakhtiari was drafted by the Packers, as they worked out together at ProActive Sports Performance in southern California.

Following the draft, with the knowledge they’d be teammates, their conversations naturally became more frequent, and Bakhtiari has appreciated having a veteran player like Matthews to turn to from the get-go.

“He made the transition really easy,” said Bakhtiari, adding that Matthews was joking with him on the field after their faceoff in the one-on-ones. “He’s been not only a great teammate but also a really good friend.

Bakhtiari said switching sides from play to play doesn’t bother him. He did some of that in college and it only took a couple of days of camp before flipping back and forth didn’t feel “unorthodox.” It’s just another way he’s made a notable first impression.

“I see it as just go out there and show what I can do,” he said. “If they call me up to be on the (first) team, I just want to make sure I’m ready to go out there and compete.” continue

Way to overcome your coaching rook. Good job! Seriously.

P.S. I heard #4 say that sentence one time about Campen

That's what I heard--sounds like Barclay is pushing EDS for time at the center position.  We need a mauler there so freaking bad.

Not necessarily.

Tausch and Cliffy both started game 1 their rookie years. And neither was a #1 pick.

I think besides Bulaga and Sitton, the other OL positions are wide open to the best man.

(Geez I like the sounds of Bakteria so far.)

I thought Clifton only replaced Mike Wahle at LT part of the way into the season.

Clifton did only start about half the games at LT that year. Wahle may have been in the mix, but I think Earl Dotson was the starter at LT in week 1. Edit: nope, he was at RT for the first two weeks, and then Tauscher took over for the next 14 starts after he went on IR.

Tues camp notes

Some of the good.

  • Eddie Lacy showed off his power on a red zone running play, running through multiple tacklers on his way to the end zone (WH, TS). He had a total of three scoring runs during the red zone period (RD), showing the tough running that he's known for.
  • ILB Terrell Manning continues to throw his weight around, this time laying a big hit on James Starks on a run up the middle (TD). Starks, on the other hand, is showing no hesitation to instigate contact (TS).
  • Jerron McMillian continued to state his case for the starting safety job, getting the top reps and picking off a pass before breaking up another throw that led to an interception (MV).Micah Hyde got the first reps in the base defense today in Tramon Williams' spot (RD). That was a bit of a surprise, given Davon House's return to the practice field. Hyde looked good again today.

Some of the bad

  • Cornerback Brandon Smith had a rough practice today, getting burned for touchdowns on multiple occasions by the Packers' veteran receivers.
  • The Don Barclay experiment at center continued today, but by all accounts it is not going well. He skipped a shotgun snap to one of the quarterbacks in team drills and was pulled immediately (TS).

I've seen several places now here Starks' been looking better than everyone in camp so far.  I'll believe it when Eddie Lee Starks can string 2 regular season games together.  It would be an interesting problem to have though.

  • Eddie Lacy showed off his power on a red zone running play, running through multiple tacklers on his way to the end zone (WH, TS). He had a total of three scoring runs during the red zone period (RD), showing the tough running that he's known for.

Somebody must have put a Big Mac and a Tom & Jerry DVD in the end zone.

Agree. And I think they are also trying to find a way to give Barclay an opportunity to see the field. But if Newhouse doesn't show more improvement I wonder if Barclay may have more upside and it would be worth it to throw him into the fire and let him gain experience.

He seems like a T and maybe a G to me.

I'm certainly no jeenyus either, but I've read his body type is that of an interior lineman. Doesn't have the wingspan or the quick feet for OT per some of the comments I've come across. Excellent run blocker and a bit of nasty too

The only reason he played tackle last year was because GB didn't have many( any) other options available. Really thin on the OL last season

Barclay is likely being trained as the utility interior guy so taking Center snaps in TC makes sense. Packers want film of him at multiple spots. Newhouse will likely start the season at RT and Sherrod , Bahktiari, Datko will challenge for that spot as the season moves along...Barclay may end up unseating EDS, but its unlikely to happen soon, maybe in 2014 and maybe that's why GB didn't lock up EDS with a long term deal

On Sundays its likely that Barclay and one other OL will be active as back-ups and those slots will be decided in the next couple of weeks. Should be a good battle this year compared to the 2012 TC

Go Packers

Is not Van Rotten the back up center?

If the Pack need a back up center Ted will either trade or pick up one at the when training camp cuts happen.

The Packers seem to have a lot of 2 and 3rd years stepping it up, and a very good income group of Rookies

Finley has been quite in train camp, both on and off the field.

This a good point. I shouldn't look at Barclay taking snaps at C as Barclay being moved to C.

Most likely they think Barclay is one of the OLmen that they want active on gameday and they are trying to get him ready at multiple positions so that he might be able to be the first guy on the field after an injury to any of the starters.

Today was the first practice I've attended in years and I also made mental notes of some of the things highlighted aleady.  Lacy really looked strong on one of those TDs where it looked like he slammed through a number of guys to get to the end zone.

Hyde looks like he can make the team.  McMillan made a nice INT.  Franklin had footing    problems today, I saw him slip twice.  Overall, I thought the Pack's offense was shaky in the red zone drills, but with guys in and out and different combinations being used, it's understandable.  Liked Jordy's stretched out 1 handed catch on one of the drills.

It's a reach since Tretter is out.  If Barclay pushes EDS for playing time I'll be worried.

Dead horse and all, please get a real oline coach.

Glad the Packers are working so hard on the pistol defense...that said, wouldn't surprise me to see that d*ck Harbaugh come out and run a pure pro-set and completely change things up...completely catch the Packers off guard.

.

Harbaugh's epic dick-ishness has not gone un-noticed in GB and MM will have his team prepared for anything they throw at them. The daily comments about 579, the public notes about the 49ers losses, his response to the Mike Neal position questions

( We'll find out on September 8th in SF)...MM is going to be in Harbaugh's head too

McCarthy has shown that he responds whenever he is shown up.

Best example is when Lovie's bears/Hester embarrassed the Packers special teams. MM came back with the fake FG for a TD to Crabtree on 4th and 26 and if you lip-read you could "see" MM saying:

" That's right motherfukker" on the sidelines during the replay

MM also called the onsides kick to start the Patriots game when Rodgers was out to put belichick on notice.

" We're nobody's underdog"

MM  will continue to lick the 49ers balls in public, but privately he is preparing this team to kick some ****ing ass in SF to start the season out with a Titletown bang

49ers and the media are the ones in for a surprise on September 8th
