So who is going to throw the back-breaking pick in OT?
Canadians are the Colts and the U.S. is the Saints.

Sidney Crosby with a turnover late and a 2-0 breakaway for the U.S. to ice the game 4-2.

I actually think the Canadians will win the gold.
That may be the most well-played hockey game I've ever seen. Bummer at the end, but beer was unintentionally tossed when Parise scored at the end of regulation. Both teams can be proud of that effort. What a game. Back and forth, almost no penalties, both teams bringing the wood and hitting a ton, damn... great game. I hate that the USA lost, but my wife is in a good mood, so that's never a bad thing.

The NHL has an opportunity here. Tens of millions of people in the US watched that game today and thought, "Damn, I gotta watch more hockey." I hope the league doesn't screw the pooch again with this momentum.

Nice to see Bucky represent on both rosters and in both stat sheets throughout the tournament with both teams as well.

They can't help it. No ESPN anymore just killed the sport. Then you add the fact the games are now on versus and 18 million DirecTV people can't watch that channel. I used to watch the playoffs but once the strike hit and they lost the ESPN contract I just gave up on it.

almost no penalties

It was great that the refs let them play!

It was fun to see Rafalski, at 35ish years old, seemingly not leave the ice in the 3rd period!

Congrats to Canada - that was a great hockey game!

Good summation. I am ready to jump on the hockey bandwagon a bit right now.

I was as into that game almost like it was a Packer or Hawk game.

Yeah, I'll be there will be quite a few jump on the hockey bandwagon, as long as they can watch it somewhere. W'ere fortunate here to get most Caps games on Comcast Sportsnet, but miss a few when they are only on Versus.

I've been able to follow a few Badgers here in Washington since I've been here in 1988. Don't think we have any currently, but we have David Steckel, a Milwaukee (westbend) area guy who is having one helluva year. He played college hockey at Ohio State, but is a Badger at heart!!

Love the game and miss very few. Hopefully the Caps make the Cup finals this year.
Don't confuse interest in the Olympics with interest in hockey. It was a good game but it will not win fans any more than a photo finish in x country skiing will generate interest in skiing. I understand the NHL gives up these two weeks every four years with the idea that they will actually benefit, but it is still a niche sport. Maybe network coverage of their playoffs would do something? Can you imagine watching the wild card game on TNT?
I'm not so sure about that this time running dirt. I do believe these after these Olympics some grudges were made. Things are going to be very interesting the next few weeks in the NHL. If you watched some of the earlier games this past week. Some of those guys were taking some pretty big cheap shots with each other. As Jeremy Roenick stated, these guys don't forget that.
I love Olympic hockey, but it never turned me into an NHL fan. When I watch most of the games during the Olympics, I can barely look away (Especially during the elimination round), but the NHL during the regular season puts me to sleep. Aside from the Stanley Cup, the occasional playoff game and those Winter Classic games they play at baseball stadiums, I just can't really get into it. I've tried following my local team (The San Jose Sharks), but for the most part, I just don't find it riveting in the way I find games like today's contest to be.
The NHL is a lot of fun to watch. That hockey game today was amazing, it was end to end action. Much better than most sports in terms of things going on.. so if the casual fan complains about nothing happening.. hockey is not a bad alternative. The problem with Hockey is that only about 1/2 if that of the US are in regions where the temperature is cold enough for outdoor hockey. Alot of schools dont have hockey programs because the equipment is costly and it isnt as wildly love as other expensive sports (like football).

I'd like it if it caught on here more than it has.
I dunno exactly why I can't really get into the NHL. There are multiple reasons, such as the ridiculously high number of foreign players (I'm not talking about Canadians), the teams in cities that should never have a hockey team (The Florida Panthers? Tampa Bay Lightning? Phoenix Coyotes? Really?). The high number of games also reduces the importance of most matchups, and it's hard to get into most of them unless they have some playoff implications or they feature a marquee matchup. I also don't really care for the fighting. It's not due to any aversion to violence, it's just pointless and it slows down the game needlessly. If you want to watch a fight, watch boxing or MMA. I don't understand the fans who think they're great, they're almost always crummy, 3rd rate fights. Some hardcore NHL fans will probably disagree strongly the last issue, but I just think the speed and flow of the game one of the things that makes Olympic hockey so great.
I follow hockey a little, in fact I am going to see the Red Wings at the Joe on Wednesday. This was planned in advance of the Olympics. The sport has a number of problems that have all been touched on. For me the number one issue is the length of the season. Nearly every team makes the playoffs, and the playoffs take two months to finish. The Stanley Cup is being played as summer weather begins. Bottom line as with baseball and basketball is that more isn't better. If the regular season games meant more I would be interested.

With Olympic hockey things are resolved in two weeks, that is worth watching.

With this in mind I do not want the NFL to tinker with the season by adding more games.

There it is for me also ... thats why I love watching Badger hockey or college level because they really do not put up with that stuff.

I believe they went to 4 guys in OT, right?
If they didn't, it sure seemed like it ... a lot of open ice. I liked it.
Yeah, they played 4 on 4 as they do in the NHL, but they played (would have) a 20 minute OT period, whereas the NHL only plays 5 minutes before going to a shootout.

As for the hooking and holding, I think they're clamping down on it (trying to) in the NHL, but the guys are still trying to do it. This makes for some very inconsistent penalties called
It took Canada extra time and the best player on the planet, plus home ice, to beat the USA. Nothing to be ashamed of.

I like hockey, but I try to follow the Badgers and college hockey. Here's just a few things that are wrong with the NHL:

The season is too long. Longest of any pro sport, going from the beginning of October to what, the end of June!?

Too many teams make the playoffs. And then the playoffs are too long. The 7-game series is borrowed from baseball. Hockey is not played in a series format at any other time or place, as far as I'm aware.

Playoff hockey in the NHL is a joke. The refs swallow their whistles in the third period, and in OT penalties are rarer than a Catholic boy named Luther. The dirtiest team wins, the team with the better and faster skaters loses. You don't see NBA refs afraid to blow the whistle in the 4th quarter of an NBA playoff game.

I much prefer the larger rink of the international/college game. The smaller rink devalues speed and skating in favor of physicality. A lot of fans like that, but I don't. Same with fighting. I prefer to see hockey, not a boxing match. I really thought that the 4 on 4 in the OT of the Olympic gold-medal game might favor the U.S., because in effect, the ice was expanded, and overall team speed would be given an advantage. Didn't work out that way.

JJ, you had me nodding with you until that little morsel above ... definitely did not fit in with all the good thoughts you had! Smiler

I wouldn't say Crosby is the best player on the planet. The majority of his goals are like the game winner. He camps out by the net and great passing by his teammates allow him to score. Granted, he makes some nice plays, but not best on the planet.
