An interesting question arose in another thread.  The theory is that no one expect anything out of the last three first-round picks.  I'm wondering if all Packer fans have already chalked all three of them up as busts or if some out there think that at least one, perhaps two or even all three of them could play well going forward.

The theory was floated with some hyperbole.  But I agree that it is interesting and a little depressing to think about. Also there is now a 97% chance that this will be a discussion topic on a future Packer pregame radio segment.

I expect Jones to do some good things starting this year.

I expect Perry to flash and tease but underperform in the long run.

I expect Sherrod to be the 6th or 7th best OLman on the team, dissapointing for a 1st rounder but appreciated in a pinch when injuries mount up.

With the rookie pool of $$ and cap slotting, it seems like it matters very little anymore where a player was plucked from. 1st round draft, 7th round draft, trade, UDFA... does it really matter? What matters is that the Packers get the best 90 players they can and then be sure to develop them and keep the best 53 / 63.

I know many fans will continue to piss and moan over a 1st round pick not playing like an All-Pro, but if Thompson and staff continue to find players (Elliot as an example) that make the team better, does it matter how they got to the NFL?

You know Thompson is loving the bump of the PS to 10 players.

I'm expecting Jones to make a big leap and I think he will.  It's hard not to root for the kid.

Sherrod will take this year to regain his "football legs" and I expect next year, will be challenging for a starting spot.

Perry is a wildcard IMO, if he stays healthy, then maybe he shines, but I think he'll be end up being a role player, in the long run (hope I'm wrong).

Nice post H5.  Also, an interesting point about the increased PS, I believe there are 2 spots available for exemptions for eligibility.  Which means you have 2 spots open for players who are older or injured, etc.

Sherrod had 3 out of 4 decent preseason games and 1 dud. He's supposedly a very smart player and to his credit, fought back and had a solid performance the last 2 games. When you don't hear his name called, it's a good thing.

Scouts/Coaches watching Jones say without a doubt, the kid tries hard. A DE in a 3-4 is not going to get gaudy stats like an OLB. Hell, look at Zombo yesterday. Racked up a couple sacks and got noticed primarily because of the role he's been in with the Chefs. I think Datone has a better year with 2 offseasons and no high ankle sprain dogging him. If Daniels, CMIII and Peppers all stay healthy, you cannot double team them all. It may free up opportunities for Jones.

With Perry, effort/training DOES appear to be an issue. My guess is Capers will try and get Elliot on the field at least in some rotation with Perry. If that happens and Elliot shines, this could be Perrys last year as a Packer.

I've given up on Perry (and I was a big supporter until the reports of him being a malcontent came out), but I have a lot of hope for Datone. I think Sherrod still can be a good backup, but he's never going to be a first stringer here.

I expect Sherrod will have to start a game at some point this season, and will do well. I expect Perry to get passed by Elliott... I expect Jones to be disruptive on the DL.

Sherrod and Jones will justify their roster spot.

With Sherrod, keep in mind he was not a top 5 pick, nor a top 15 pick, not even a top 30 pick. He went 32nd in the 1st or the last first rounder picked that year. No one expected him to be the next Joe Thomas. He'd need some grooming and development. Then came the horrific leg injury. Now after basically 2 years off rehabbing he's in a contract year. If he's a solid back-up this year and if called upon to play does a respectful job then I'll be happy for him.

The question to me is next year who will pony up to sign him and for how much?

I expect Jones to keep improving. DE is a position many players take 3 or so years to finaly hit their stride.

Perry I think, regardless of further injury or what he does on the field, leaves at his first opportunity in FA. Dont think he likes being in GB or the midwest and would prefer the left coast or a much warmer climate. And still thinks he'd rather be on a 4-3 team. Course I've been rong many times in the past, but thats my take on him.

Jones will be a productive pick

Sherrod will be a serviceable pick

Perry looks like he wants to be somewhere else

Packers have 6 starters from 2013 draft. Barrington could eventually make it 7 starters.

Nearly 50% of all 1st round picks are busts.

I think Datone has a chance, but so far has looked pretty unremarkable. That could be the nature of being a 3-4 end, though.

Perry actually had moments in the preseason, so who knows...but there's lots of other guys in house outperforming him now.

If Sherrod can be a reliable backup swing tackle for us this year, that would be great.

Too early to make a call on Datone, but the other two can fairly be called disappointments. To be fair to Perry, the Packers are the ones attempting to fit a square peg in a round hole and deserve their share of the blame. Perhaps they should just draft the  position rather than attempting a position switch. Best case for Sherrod is a competent backup at both tackles and doubt he'll ever challenge for a starting spot.

TT has mitigated the damage somewhat by doing a good job of finding players on the scrap heap, but his recent drafting has been relatively mediocre, especially on the defensive side.

I realized that I happen to have a picture of Nick Perry on his first day of practice. CM III was obviously told to hold his wittle hand all day.

Now , I can see he didn't want to be there at all, on day one. LOL.

Clay is ready for battle, Nick looks like he is in a sulk already.

Pretty obvious from this picture that Tolzzzzien is thinking of Flynn's hot wife and not focused on football.

Guy is obviously just in it for the paycheck

Good question.  I expect all 3 to improve or expect to be out of the NFL next year, if not sooner.

Perry has been especially disappointing to me.   I expect him to ride a bike to the practice field during training camp, to not show up naked, and to collect a paycheck far bigger than most of us ever see during our lifetimes.   Other than that, I'd be surprised to see anything out of him.   I'd be thrilled to see him prove me wrong!

You want to see him riding a bike naked?

I did not know that about you.

At some point

Has to tell

That he's embarrassing the program and to get the eff on board.

Clay was a true badass at USC. Effing walk on that had to earn Pete Carroll's trust.

5 days Clay. 5 days.

While we're here....

Nick Perry was recruited by Pete Carroll then kicked ass for him at USC and then Pete bounced when Pete knew he was ****ed. Leaving Nick on a blacklisted team going nowhere.

If Nick doesn't want a piece of Pete Carroll's team Thursday he doesn't want to play football.

I need to adjust my expectations. Each guy goes down a notch.

Jones is the guy who flashes in the backfield and gives you hope, but then misses the QB

Perry is the 4th or 5th best OLB on the team and will only be appreciated if injuries plague the position. Otherwise he is just a guy at best.

Sherrod isn't even a quality backup. He is an emergency backup as long as the OC changes the game plan to account for how bad he is.

I do think Ha Ha has the ability to break Ted's recent 1st round slump.

I think Perry is/could be a good player, he just has to stay off the trainers table. If he had been able to play consistently and not be in and out I think he could have developed into a nice player, probably good enough that we wouldn't have had to sign Peppers. Mike Neal was in the same boat a couple years ago, he finally got healthy and I think he's been a good rotational player the last couple years.

I think Datone is badly miscast. Despite his size I don't think he needs to be down as a 3-tech. That's a waste. He's not Justin Tuck or Michael Bennett who will be able to slide down and still dominate. That seems to  be what they want him to do. He needs to be down as a 5-tech or coming off the edge either with his hand in the dirt or standing. Just my opinion though.

As for Sherrod, I didn't like the pick when TT made it in the first place. I didn't think he was aggressive enough at MSU and I thought he relied too much on his size and athleticism. Obviously the thought was they could develop that attitude, but I don't think that's happened. Compared to Sitton and Lang and even Buck Cherry he's very passive. He's a good back-up when he gets some help because physically he won't get bullied, but more athletic rushers are going to annihilate him.

Sherrod's injury was about as gruesome as you'll see on a football field. I really admire all he's done to try and get back. He might have the physical tools but heavens, his technique is all over the lot. Maybe he'll come around, here's hoping so.

Mike Tanier's description of Sherrod's season to date is pretty spot on:

http://bleacherreport.com/arti...er-requiem-for-rgiii

Derek Sherrod

The Packers right tackle looked like a beach ball at a Jimmy Buffett concert against the Seahawks, and he was only slightly less inept against the Jets.

Sherrod got tossed to the ground by Quinton Coples on a sack of Aaron Rodgers in the first quarter. A series later, he was beaten inside easily, surrendering a big hit on Rodgers. Sherrod made other mistakes, but the Jets lost Muhammad Wilkerson to an ejection, and the Packers switched to "max protect and bomb to Jordy Nelson" tactics, taking the heat off their right tackle.

Sherrod looks like he is trying to push a pickup truck out of a snowbank when he blocks. He shifts all his weight forward and lunges, using his target for support. Now imagine using that technique to push a pickup truck that wanted to avoid being pushed.

Do you picture a grown man looking very silly as he falls forward? Slap a Packers jersey on him, and you have just pictured Derek Sherrod.

Sherrod looks like a young guy who hasn’t played much football in a while. He started playing better in the second half yesterday and the one bad inside rush he gave up was actually Lang failing to execute the switch on a stunt while Sherrod picked up the guy cutting outside.

The Jets were obviously going after the Center and Tackles yesterday with lots of A-Gap blitzes (especially early) and running stunts, twists or just rushing wide on the tackles. They adjusted fairly well as the game went on. This isn’t an elite offensive line, it’s maybe average even with Bulaga in there. Hopefully Tretter can come back and give them more athleticism and versatility in the middle and Bulaga can come back strong and move them to solid. Bakhtiari will never be an elite Left Tackle but if he can be average against good speed rushers that will help a lot.
