Heya folks,

I have to admit it, sports radio out of WI has been driving me nuts.  Wilde and his show on ESPN 540 only lasts an hour and frankly, those guys spend more time bitching and whining or taking calls than actually giving us good coverage.  The D-List is about as worthless as they come, though I have to admit I haven't been able to hang on long enough to listen to Homer in the afternoon.

Living in the TC there are quite a few sports stations to listen to and I do like stuff that 1500 does (can't stand KFAN) but this time of year I don't want to put up with all the queens blather. BUT at least these guys talk about their team and what's going on around the league too.  It seems like it would be easy enough to put together some reasonable programming in WI to cover the PACK!

I have searched and searched and still can't find a good sports stream to give me Packer discussion, some league-wide coverage, and just general reasonable sports talk radio with a good focus on the NFL and the GBP.  While working in Central WI lately I have found the Bill Micheals show a few times, which was OK with some Badger and Packer coverage, but it seems hit or miss.

What do any of you use? Do you have suggestions?

Currently my only choice is ESPN540 - Milwaukee.  I have found a station out of GB but it seems to be the new CBS radio network and just national coverage.

WSSP isn't bad. The big show in the afternoon features Leroy Butler, Gil Brown at times, and Ellerson is tolerable. Sparky Pfiefer (sp?) gets on everyone's nerves but they will bring in reporters from the GBPG and have some decent inside info on TC and Packer practices. They will also stream live MM's press conferences. So if you're not in front of a lap top screen, you can still listen to MM.

WSSP 1250 has a good amount of local content - though its mostly Brewers right now.  I listen to the afternoon show on days when I get to sit in my office.  I haven't lived in Wisconsin since the Sports Talk Radio boom began, so hearing Packer focused shows is nice - but I wouldn't call their on-air talent the best I've ever heard.

The app itself works fine for me - though if you read the reviews, you'll see that some people have trouble with it crashing.  They also have on-demand content, but again, it's mostly Brewers shows right now.

I have to agree, it seem pretty good.  My biggest problem is I couldn't find where they listed a show schedule... they list the shows but not the schedule.  I don't mind the Bill  Micheals show and The Big show sounds interesting.  Work will go better today.

BTW, it seems the WDUZ switches to national programming @ 11am.  I will keep an eye/ear out to see if they have an afternoon show.

Thanks for the tips so far!

I am digging into WDUZ.  It's 'the Fan' out of Green Bay.  Its hard to tell how much local coverage they have.... WDUZ 107.5 out of GB

from 4p-6p that station has Chris Havel and usually Harry Sydney and once a week Sean Jones via telephone.  it's what I listen to on the ride home.  it's pretty good most of the time.  they also have Bill & Rookie in morning which is pretty good.

Ever consider podcasts?  In very basic terms it's like a twitter feed of audio.  If you have a smart phone you can subscribe to radio shows the same way you can follow reporters on twitter.  When you update all the latest shows will be there to peruse.

packernet has a list of the feeds for all the packers shows (some of them are out of date, but most are good).

Great thing about podcasts is pretty much most of the commercials are cut out and most have a description of guests and topics.  If PTI and Around the Horn are talking baseball I don't even bother.  If there are interesting topics it only takes 22 minutes to listen to each one without the commercials.

That time saved means I can listen to a lot more content in a day.  So instead of just having a stream of one packers station playing in the background (with 65 percent commercials and mind numbingly dumb callers), I can search out other podcasts and get a wider perspective from informed guests.

There are so many podcasts out there now that it's easy to fill a day. John Madden has a daily one that's only about seven minutes long.   Start every day with it.  Rich Eisen has one.  Pro Football Focus owner is on the Prime Sports Network one,  Grantland has one,  ESPN has podcasts for most of their shows.  Outside the Lines,   Interviews from Mike and Mike in the morning.  Doug Farrar from Yahoo's shutdown corner has one.

It's so much better than radio.  And it's still the golden age before the advertising  c***s get their hands on it, commercialize the piss out of it, and ruin it.

I fully agree with titmfatied's post.  To advance his post you can get podcasts of various sports reporters on the Packer's beat.  For example, not only can you get Wilde as listed above, but also there is an audiovault on Milwaukee 540 (ESPN) that daily segments his appearances on D-List and sometimes they get around to posting when he's on Homer and Thunder (hour 2 last 15 minutes).  That way during the day you get info early in the day, mid morning, and late afternoon.

I also follow Packers Talk Radio podcasts which are more hit and miss, but you can get interesting interviews on occasion like Wes Hod from the press gazette, or recently a former GM from the Broncos peddling a book and giving opinions.

Less frequently you can Tyler Dunne and McGinn JSonline who are threatening a weekly podcast.  During the football season you can get Peter King as well.  I like his podcasts because of the people he gets to interview (Ted Thompson on 12/28/2011 for example).

WDUZ is pretty decent for Packers coverage but it should be as the main sports radio station out of Green Bay.   The Sean Jones weekly bit with Havel is outstanding.  Think that's Wednesday's around 5pm.

1250 AM out of Milwaukee is OK as they usually feature a lot of Packers coverage as well.  I know they feature Wes Hodkiewicz from time to time and he's a beat writer for the Packers.  Heard him give an update from training camp on Monday.

WDUZ has a lot of local programming, which is nice.  In a nutshell, here's what they have:

6am-11am - Bill and Rookie.  All local coverage.

11am-2pm - Jim Rome

2pm - 4pm - CBS Sports (can't remember who)

4pm-6pm - Local programming with Chris Havel

6pm - ?? CBS Sports

The station has gotten much better since they dumped the ESPN Radio Network.

Another local station to look at is WNFL - http://wnflam.com/

I Tune-In to WTMJ for the post-game shows and to catch Packer Talk on Sports Central.  I like Greg Matzek.  One Sunday night about 10 weeks ago I tuned in to some boob from another station who was on with Harry Sydney.  The guy was stupid enough to speculate that the Packers should trade Aaron Rodgers and get a bunch of good draft picks...he was an idot then and now he is an even bigger IDOT for even thinking of it, let alone discussing it on his show.  Even Harry Sydney was stunned about it.

Since 2008, living in Boise and also Singapore - my repertoire includes 105.7 The Fan in Milwaukee (WSSP), WDUZ, WTMJ Sports Central, and the Green & Gold hour on 540AM.

Also downloaded an App on iPhone called Cheesehead radio - Bucks, Brewers, Badgers, Packers games all available somehow without having to pay for each league subscription. Love listening to Wayne and Larry synched to TV feed as my Grandpa used to do with Jim & Max - in the Pacific NW
