McCarthy: Jeff Janis is doing a lot of good things

Green Bay — The following is a summary of coach Mike McCarthy's post-practice press conference following Monday's OTA:

(On Jared Cook’s foot) Jared Cook, we have no long-term concern with his situation. It will be good to have him back.

(On his timetable) I don’t really have a timetable for that. I’m not going to get into injuries. This isn’t the time for that.

(On Jeff Janis taking the next step) Jeff Janis is doing a lot of good things. He just needs to continue to progress through the fundamentals of the position. Special teams he had an excellent year last year, graded out as one of our top players. I’d like to see him take that same step as a wide receiver.

(On Richard Rodgers handling Jared Cook arrival) I really don’t think players view it that way. … Veteran players understand that you need as many good players as you can. I would definitely think Richard welcomes that. Any time you have a veteran that has experience somewhere else, it’s an opportunity for Richard and the rest of those tight ends to grow.

(On Janis’ skill set) Jeff is a big target that can go deep. I think the play he made today was really good concentration on his part, competing through the interaction with the DB and tip of the ball and keep playing. He’s a very strong wide receiver. I think that surprises people. He uses his strength and his speed.

(On the demeanor of this team) When we completed last week I would say the defense was a big step ahead of the offense. This week I think the offense did some really nice things. … These are big-time challenges mentally for our guys, and you can see it starting to come together.

(On Blake Martinez benefitting from Sam Barrington’s absence) I think he looks very comfortable. I think he’s done a real nice job transitioning from the base defense to the sub defense. Very bright, quick. He definitely is a very instinctive player.

(On the draft picks still in school) There’s nightly meetings with the coaches. We’re looking forward to getting those guys here at the end of the week.

Coach, many Packers fans and some in the media believe Janis has already taken that step. Why can't you see it?

I honestly can't remember despising a guy more than I despise Jeff Janis for no other reason than the never ending coverage about a guy that's accomplished nothing. It's the damnedest thing I've ever seen.

Jeff Janis will end up joining the X4 What Should Have Been Squad along with Jumal Rolle, Tori Gurley, Ruvell Martin, Carl Bradford, and Breno Giacomini (at blocking TE). Not quite a starting set, but it's getting there.

Ted got a pretty good gunner on ST's for a 7th round pick. If he does nothing more then continue to play at or near a pro bowl level on ST's alone, that's a hell of a value out of a 7th round pick.

No one claimed he was ready. He obviously was not. What people were saying was put him in anyway, because he could not have been worse than the injured Adams.

A lot of Packer fans are trying to will Janis! into Jordy 2.0.

True this. It's hard not to, considering the problem seems to be mainly a mental one. Or as AR has insinuated, not doing his homework.

Good way for a coach to lose his job.

Same could be said about leaving a struggling, injured Sophomore out there. But really, none of that applies to Mike McCarthy.  His job was never in jeopardy either way.

Bottom line is, that offensive slump last year, spearheaded by that group of receivers?  That happened, and it was brutal to watch.  Some here want to pretend that it didn't, or act like we as fans were imagining it, or that it is all some unjustified Janis love that caused the negativity, but that's just deflecting the ultimate truth of it.

Personally, all I care about is, I don't want to see something like that happen again.

MM gave Clements to much creative freedom. And that ass clown almost did the impossible. Grind this offense into sawdust. MM didn't take back control of the offense because the WR's were running **** routes.

Are you ****ing brain dead?

I think everyone on offense was struggling, the receivers were just the most glaring weakness because this is an offense reliant on the passing game. And really I think the struggle had as much to do with how defenses attacked our offense. Defenses are normally in the bend-don't-break mode against GB because it's inevitable that Rodgers will score. The running game wasn't creating any opportunities in the pass game and vice versa, the OLine was battling injuries and weren't able to open holes/protect Rodgers like they should have been, and Rodgers played with such little confidence that there was no hope. Defenses feasted on all those opportunities, playing with no fear. There's no adjustment to that kind of defense other than executing at 100% and taking advantage of opportunities. That style of D is why Seattle has been so successful on D the last few years. Their scheme isn't unique or brilliant, they just had 11 talented, badass dudes who were incredibly aggressive, playing without any fear and executing properly. To say Janis would have made a difference is asinine. Maybe he provides a spark on some bubble screens or slant routes, but you can't go to him every play and he's just not capable of commanding the kind of attention that would have allowed for other opportunities. Janis wouldn't fixed the OLine, RBs, or QB, so you go with who the QB has confidence throwing to which was not Janis.

Packers need to have our resident 12 yr old QB guru build up Janis's foundation. He can start with working on the more sexist routes like Yolanda  and Mrs. Wischnewski and then move on to the more racist ones like Hot Peppers.

It must be the politics of the situation.  Holy jumpin' Geronimo, try and make something more out of Janis being a slowcoach.

I don't know why everyone thinks Janis has to be an instant success.  It took Nelson until his 4th year to put up meaningful stats.  By that measure:

Trevor Davis has 4 years to get there.

Ty Monty has 3 years to get there.

Abby & Janis have 2 years to get there.

Adams has 1 year to get there.

As depressing as that looks, maybe we have one more so-so year out of those guys.  Then - watch out.

Try saying that in the first place instead of just throwing out chickensh*t insults.  I probably would have agreed instead of going all Postal GB.  Way too early in the season for that.

No, I really think you're brain dead or at least frontal lobe damage for saying that.

"Everyone is denying the greatness of Janis".

I remember when he joined.  At the time, I was convinced it was Short Man Syndrome. You know, always wanting to provoke a fight, to make up for a height problem.  I made a bet with him and everything.  He proved he was like 6 feet so I dropped it.

Now I'm wondering if it's some other kind of "size problem." Or maybe some kind of weird sexual compulsion.  Seems like he gets off on it, and needs a release every now and then.  That's 2 times in a row on me.

Great poster otherwise, just kind of a pindick and a jerk-off artist I guess.

You win Napolean. I agree the part of my post you first quoted was stupid.

Probably just a coincidence...or maybe not.

I have heard a pretty solid rumor from the "car" guy with insider access that Rodgers does have some sort of shoulder issue that will eventually have to be addressed.

It flares up each season now...but last season was very close to having to shut him down for at least one game.

There are always nicks and scrapes to worry about...hopefully it had nothing to do with last seasons issues.

Watching Hundley's development should be one of the more entertaining stories of  pre-season.

I think Ted stole one here...this cat can play.
