Could be rong, but any FA vet signed now who makes the final 53 for week one has their pay guaranteed for the year. However, if signed after week one their pay is not guaranteed. So, if they don't pan out for any reason they can be released with a much lesser financial hit. Thus, if Gutie adds any FA it would likely be after week one.

Indeed.
And both the vet players and their agents are acutely aware of this...and will use it to their advantage in negotiating deals.

Team A says  " We'll wait until after game 1"
Team B says  " we'll sign him now"
Sometimes, that's The Decider. The flip side for both the player and the teams is that any of them may sustain an injury that changes their needs/focus and or opens up new opportunities that weren't there before.
Its a game of chicken & musical chairs around the league.
End of the day, they've all got decisions to make and must remember:

A bird in the hand isn't better than a hand in the bush

Not that a player would sign for a small amount, but I think this would be pretty easy to work through.  A team would offer a base contract with incentives.  Don't know what the vet minimum would be, but it would be fairly easy to absorb should the player end up getting cut.

That said, I think a lot of these players would prefer to "wait and see". Most probably have no desire to be in any training camp.  Once the season starts and teams have injuries, underproduction, etc, those FAs are in a much better position to negotiate.

Here's a twitter feed from Dusty Evely.
He does a ton of film study and here are his comments on Caleb Jones

"Watched Caleb Jones' snaps from the 2nd preseason game and I have some thoughts: Love the potential. Tremendous size and some great power that goes with it. His initial punch is insane, and when he's road-grading on runs it's really something to watch.

However...SUPER raw. He's got power but loses leverage pretty easily. Needs to learn to play a little more within his base. When he gets in space it gets pretty dicey. More than one whiff on a block. Trouble lining guys up. Seems like he gets caught thinking a little too hard.

Certainly had some solid moments against the Saints, but I feel like he would get torn to shreds against starters at this point. That being said, when he really locks on in the run game or lands a punch in pass pro, it's stunning to watch."

David’s joke aside. I thought about that. Perhaps they were holding him out of practice because a trade for him was being considered. They did not want him injured. Then it might have fell through. Jenkins tweet might have been made in the middle of that process before it fell through and why it was deleted later.

Training camp is winding down, our thoughts drift toward the opener in minny

MLF is 2-1 in that stadium and that played a part in sending Zimmer packing

Hey O'Connell, who's the new boss of the NFC North?
Same as the old boss...Best you get used to looking up at the Packers

I will be there for the opening game.  Damn I hope MLF will make it 3-1 there.

Not sure why I decided to torture myself going to that stadium.

Must have missed it....what did Jenkins' tweet say?

I don’t have Twitter and it was deleted right away. I hate to paraphrase it without seeing it again. The tone of it was odd and seem to reflect a possible change in environment.
I am sure one of the smart people here could dig it up. I lack in that area.

Edit: the only other possibility is that he was mad about his treatment at a restaurant. https://wisportsheroics.com/pa...estaurant-of-racism/

Fucking Newman...   Tom can't play RG?

I'm sure he can, but its just not his frame/game. Tom has really good feet and can move laterally better than most. Great for an OT. But the price for those quick feet is his "smaller" legs - he just doesn't have the drive power of an NFL OG, yet

Newman was lighter-legged too, but he's had a year+ in the strength and conditioning program and should be a better choice in 2022.

These 4th round guys don't have NFL bodies when they arrive, but they're being asked to take on Pro DL. If you have quick feet- you can make it work at OT, but brute strength is more important for OGs.

It used to be the other way around.  Back in the 60's and 70's you wanted quicker guards who could pull on the sweeps and such.  Forrest Gregg was much stronger that Jerry Kramer.  Jerry  used to tell Forrest  that he was going to switch to tackle when Forrest retired so he wouldn't have to run as much.   Same on the other side of the Packer line. Skronski was bigger and stronger than Fuzzy.
