Analysis

Draft Projection
Round 4

Overview

Highly experienced and a respected team leader, Pratt has shown consistent improvement from season to season. Pratt has done a nice job of making safe decisions instead of reckless ones and throws with touch over all three levels. He struggles to throw with consistent accuracy and placement on intermediate throws. Also, he appears to lack the anticipation and field awareness to beat NFL coverage across the field. Pratt has Day 3 potential but will be in a battle to win a future backup role.

Strengths

* Four-year starter and three-year team captain.

* Displayed consistent improvement at the position over four years.

* Light feet in the pocket to slide and adjust positioning due to pressure.

* Consistently alters touch relative to the throw that is needed.

* Does a nice job of selling pump-and-go throws.

* Adequate mobility to create additional yardage as a scrambler.

Weaknesses

* Below-average timing and arm talent as full-field thrower versus NFL coverage.

* Doesn’t throw with enough anticipation against zone windows.

* Slow to get through progressions and locate open targets on the backside.

* Struggles with consistent accuracy and ball placement outside the numbers.

* Forces wide receivers to break stride on downfield throws.

This is good...

Saw someone with a 4th round grade on him. Great value in both seventh round picks.

From The Athletic, Dane Brugler

QB8

STRENGTHS: Accurate, controlled passer with repeatable mechanics and setup … efficient, over-the-top delivery … throws a very catchable ball with the anticipation to hit targets in stride … works well on sail/flood concepts with enough juice to drive outside the numbers … shows a good feel for defensiv e voids and where to go with the football … keeps his eyes downfield in the face of the rush… will slide and shift in the pocket t o avoid the initial rush and find throwing lanes … doesn’t have top-tier size or athleticism but is certainly good enough in both areas … teammates and coaches unanimously praise his character and competitive habits (former head coach Willie Fritz: “I’m guessing he probably works 350, maybe more, days a year on his craft.”) … started 44 games the past four seasons and leaves Tulane as the school’s all-time leader in several categories, including total touchdowns and total offense

WEAKNESSES: Average ball velocity on his throws and doesn’t have an arm cannon … downfield passes lose life when he can’t transfer his we ight mid-delivery …inconsistent feeling rushers around him and can be overly patient in the pocket at times … identifies where to go pre-snap, and his eye manipulation post-snap is undeveloped … has a few passes on each tape that are a tick late when he doesn’t trust what he sees … highly competitive and tough, but his coaches have stressed preserving his body, which has been a work in progress … missed one game as a sophomore because of a concussion (October 2021); missed one game as a junior because of a shoulder injury (September 2022) and played through a painful heel fracture late in the season (November 2022); missed two games as a senior because of a left knee injury (September 2023), including a match-up vs. Ole Miss that NFL scouts had circled.

SUMMARY: A four-year starter at Tulane, Pratt thrived in former offensive coordinator Slade Nagle’s scheme. After not playing football until high school, he showed steady improvements each season with the Green Wave, throwing a touchdown pass in 44 of his 45 games and breaking Patrick Ramsey’s school records for passing yards and passing touchdowns. Pratt is very clean in his setup and delivers a quick, accurate stroke, showing the ability to feather passes in between levels of the defense. Though he operates with rhythm from the pocket, he needs to continue developing his feel to spot the rush and hasten his process when needed. Overall, Pratt might not have the high-level physical traits to carry an NFL offense, but you don’t see panic in his game , and he has natural sense for where to go with the football. He projects as a quality NFL backup with starting upside in the right role.

GRADE: 3rd-4th Round

Pratt has his jersey number 7 tattooed on his bicep, along with 'Believe'.

My guess is he won't have any luck trying to persuade Quay into giving it up.
Or he could add a '1' to the tatt and hope that Anders Carlson flames out.

From Doug Farrar

" J.J. McCarthy went 10th overall, and the Vikings traded up to get him. Michael Pratt went 245th to the Packers. Now, tell me one thing McCarthy does that Pratt doesn't."

Well, here's one:

J.J. plays for the Queens of Choking and Pratt plays for the 13 Time World Champions.

The stats aren't that different between the two. If anything, GB got Pratt a whole lot cheaper for close to the same production as McCarthy. And I think Pratt throws a much better long ball.

I was thinking the same thing - how much better are McCarthy and Nix than Pratt? Is it really 235 picks? I get that the QB position is by far the most important position but seems like the pendulum has swing too far - 6 QBs in the top 12 just two years after we saw 4 of the 5 QBs drafted in the top 15 in the 2021 draft become busts. There are not 6 franchise QBs in this draft. There probably aren't even 3.
