No self-respecting Iowan would be caught dead in that Jap-mobile!
Pontiac Aztek would like a word.
Exactly.

I miss my Element.
So you'd say you're out of your element?

I, for one, am shocked by this revelation.
I loved how functional it was. Could take out the back seats and haul a bunch of stuff easily. I ended up with a lemon as the engine went after only about 130K miles. Perfect for dogs too with the rubberized floor. Best vehicle I've ever owned.
I had a Chrystal K car. Awful.
I guess I am the only one here cool enough to have driven a 1976 Gremlin
Nope, I had a fairly new Gremlin during my college years, think it was a 75. Anyway it had most options available and the larger straight 6 engine. It was a factory exec car that my dad who worked at AMC was able to get for me at a reasonable price. It actually was a really good car, but definitely not a chick magnet.

Our 5th grade teacher, a rather rotud fellow, had a gremlin he took the front seat out of and drove from the back seat.
There was a house on our way to church that always had 3 gremlins in their driveway. I'd like to know the backstory to that. We didn't live near an AMC plant. Eventually one of the gremlins was replaced by a pacer.

But not shocked by the fact Goldie didn't like it.

My first car was a 1977 AMC Pacer... orange in color. It was hideous.
Oh the Pacer! I forgot about that albatross.
Had a '74 AMC Hornet Hatchback. Was good little car, it had a 3 speed on the floor.
really not bad for a little two door car in the mid 70's.
My dad had a 86 Eagle for about 6 months before he got rid of it.
My dad had an Eagle too. He was a millwright and hauled all his tools, probably 750lbs+ from job to job. He really liked it.
I was excited about it being 4x4. I think it sucked too much gas for my dad, a foundry guy.
My dad owned nothing but AMC's. My brothers had Javelin's, AMX's, and ended up hot rodding out a 73 Gremlin. Won a lot of drag races with it as they stuffed a big V8 in it. Thing was so light and that engine, they just blew people away.
My first car was a '76 AMC Hornet, 4 door when I was in high school. Paid $400 bucks for it. The stereo system we put in it cost about double that.
I'm a bit younger than you guys, so the first car I drove was only a 1980 Ford Escort two-door hatchback.

Would love to have a restored 2 seater AMC AMX in my classic car collection garage (once I win the lottery to build one). It was a pretty sweet answer to the chevy corvette. Growing up near Kenosha, AMC vehicles were everywhere.
72 Chevy Vega! It came thru the flood of 72 in western New York. Listed for $2500. I bought it for $600 brand new but totally immersed for 1 day in the flood. My brother and I meticulously cleaned the engine. (No electronics like today). I drove it 100,000 miles and sold it for $900! 👏
You'd think Iowacheese would come here for the vintage car talk.

When I was a kid my brother would take me to Golden Sands for spectator night where anyone could line up their car and race another car for one lap. Some guy fitted out his chevette with two bored out snowmobile engines over the rear wheels. He won the championship that summer.
I was a dealership mechanic in the 80's
AMC's were built from components from the big 3. Had a Gremlin come in. It had a Ford alternator and transmission. Chrysler rear axle and GM ignition and starter.
Chrysler had the K car with about 6 other levels up to the FWD New Yorker. Same car different trim. Head gasket a day in the shop
Omni / Horizon/ Turismo/ Challenger worse version of the K platform. Leaked water like a sieve. I got pretty good and tearing the fenders off and sealing the gaping hole where the firewall met the sides.
Then Chrysler bought AMC Jeep Renault! Boy Howdy! Constant exhaust manifold and axle repairs on the Jeeps along with carbs that fell off like on a Harley! Renaults were worse then came the Eagle line with the "Unfixable car called the Medallion with the Renault Fuego engine that needed to wear a diaper.
GM with the X car, computer command control and the "Cease Fire Injection

Oof, that was my dad's last car in his golden years.
After he passed we put the back seat in it again (was removed to make room for a wheelchair) and it went to my nephew as his first car. Poor kid.
Hey, I had a little silver Dodge Omni that ran like a champ! I traded it in with about 130,000 on it. Such an easy engine to work on with the oil filter right in the front; changing oil was a breeze. (I once used a belt to loosen the oil filter when I didn't have a wrench.) That little car went through snow almost halfway up the doors and water just as deep (back when Shepherd Road in St. Paul would regularly flood). It stopped on the highway once and when I called to have it towed, I asked if they had a fuel pump for it because that's what went out. The dude poo-pooed my diagnosis but offered me a job after they replaced the fuel pump. That was the only thing to go wrong with it over the more than five years I owned it. It was a good little car for me.
