First time I really watched Shaw that carefully and he's a very good player. His receivers did make a couple nice plays but Shaw made good decisions and throws and ran the ball very effectively.

Bucky doesn't need a top-flight QB, they just need a competent game-manager who won't make the mistakes and can make a few plays. Really the first year in quite a while that they haven't had that from the position.

I wouldn't say they always suck. Brooks Bollinger, Jim Sorgi, Russell Wilson, and Scott Tolzein Have all played in the NFL in the last 10  years or so. The recruiting has always seemed to focus on 3 yards and a cloud of dust players at both RB and OL. They have had some pretty talented WR &TE too, but only 1 at a time and with an average QB getting them the ball.  I guess you can't have everything all at once.

Congrats  to the Gamecocks Brak, they were the better team today. especially at QB.

Talent evaluation may be a good point.  But how do you find NFL talent @ OL and RB and DL and CB and S and TE and maybe LB (Borland is fantastic!) and whiff over and over at a key position like QB?

I'm not talking about a bunch of Millers and Cousins and Newtons and Bridgewaters and Bortles and such.

But getting a steady supply of Tolziens should be lined up to go to UW.  And with the kind of ball Bucky plays, that should be enough to poke your head into BCS territory every 4 years or so.

I haven't read the whole thread so I may have missed this. In my opinion, UW's ongoing issue ever since Barry Alvarez arrived has been a major deficiency at both defensive back positions. The Badgers never have been able to stop/defeat teams that have a decent passing attack. I believe that is the major reason we almost always lose bowl games. Other conferences don't play BIG football, and that always works against them/us. What do you think?

With the exception of the Rose Bowl against Oregon (with Wilson) the QBs haven't held up their end of the bargain in recent bowl games for Wisconsin.   They've also usually played well enough defensively to keep them in games but they struggled in pass D in their final two games this year.  For the season, the secondary played pretty well but I think teams figured out you can attack #12 and that's what happened today.   The corners are still young but again they held up pretty well for most of the season.   It's the lack of pass rush that hurt them the most but give Aranda and Anderson more time to recruit and I think they will be fine.

Since Mike Echols and Jamar Fletcher, you're probably right. IMO, The kid we have now, #8 is gonna be a good one ... he has it. I trust Andersen knows what he wants and the defensive scheme looks very flexible if he upgrades the personnel.

Yeah, I can agree with that but really, other than O-line and RB, the Badgers just don't recruit well at any of the other positions. There's always been a smattering of talent at other positions but no consistency.

Clowney has ability  that's for sure but there were plenty of times today he got run at or taken out of plays and this is a good but not great UW line.   The odds of him facing QBs this bad are not very good and if he can't learn to play the run better he'll be nothing more than a situational guy.   The Badgers ran all over that defense today and had Connor Shaw been the Wisconsin QB the Badgers would have won going away.
Personally I think the Badgers recruit just fine.   People want to rip on the corners but Scott Starks and Devin Smith were also very good in recent memory.   It always seems though there's one weak link in the DB group and this year it was #12.  Last couple of years it was Cromartie.   I like Hilary and Jean and Shelton and they will get better.

They have a pretty interesting group defensive and offensive players coming in next year.   More playmakers for sure.  Losing Borland and Abby will hurt but again, I trust Anderson that he will build up this team.

They need a damn QB though

But, the point is, if you CAN land a top flight QB, why not do so?

And if the Badgers generally do not do so, maybe it's because it's hard for them.

QB is the most important position in football.  I would think that regardless of offensive scheme, if I can recruit among the best quarterbacks, I will.

Bart Houston was recruited by a number of schools including Washington, AZ, UCLA, etc.  He is/was probably one of the 10-12 best QB prospects in HS when he committed to the Badgers.

Tanner McEvoy had no less than 20 offers on the table with a number of big schools/programs.   He ended up committing (ironically) to South Carolina.  When he became available again, schools like Oregon, Florida, and West Virginia were trying to get him in the fold and he decided Wisconsin was the place to be.

I still go back to Owen Daniels.  He was a 4 or 5 star QB prospect and he ended up at TE.  The guy that played yesterday (Phillips) was also pretty highly touted but simply could not stay healthy.  Go figure.

Again, I don't think the Badgers have had a problem recruiting QBs.  I think their bigger issue is that they haven't done a great job developing them and they've ended up settling on guys that are more or less game managers that don't make mistakes,   That's fine, but when you get to the top levels of college football you won't win with pedestrian QBs.

I think with Houston and McEvoy they have two guys they can work with for sure.

As bad as the QB play was with Stave and worse with Phillips lets not let the d of the hook.  A huge KO return and a good special team play gave SC the ball inside the 10.  Badgers had big mo on their side, what happened?  A long time consuming drive which sucked the air out that momentum. Bucky needed a stop, did not get it.

By the way, am I the only one who thinks we just may have pulled it out if Stave did not get hurt?

My awareness is sketchy, but here goes.  Wilson was different, transferring from another school.

I just think that for where the program ranks nationally, Bucky seems to generally have a starting QB well below that ranking.  It would be interesting to target maybe 5 teams that do about as well as UW and do a starting QB comparison.

I think with some of the Badger teams (massive o-line, fleet of excellent RB's, decent receivers), if (say) a Top 5 QB was plugged into such a team, it would be tough for anyone outside of Alabama to beat them.
