well I guess GA needs to start recruiting a top 5 QB then
As bad as the QB play was with Stave and worse with Phillips lets not let the d of the hook. A huge KO return and a good special team play gave SC the ball inside the 10. Badgers had big mo on their side, what happened? A long time consuming drive which sucked the air out that momentum. Bucky needed a stop, did not get it.
By the way, am I the only one who thinks we just may have pulled it out if Stave did not get hurt?
They would have won outright had Andy Ludwig not gone stupid and let Stave throw. The SC defense was gassed at the end of the first half and the Badgers were gaining 3+ yards/carry all game long with only the occasional stop.
Stave was terrible, Phillips was worse. It's like choosing between syphyllis and the clap, you don't want either but one's a slightly less painful choice.
Just to clarify, I don't know what my expectations are, but I know they aren't that UW acquires a Top 5 QB.
I guess at a high somewhat sketchy level, if the Badgers are generally ranked anywhere from (say) 8 to 15, I would like it if the QB was nationally ranked in the same ballpark.
They got lucky landing Russell Wilson. Had other college teams known he would have played that well for Wisconsin they would have gone after him harder than they did. The sad thing is that they had all the pieces in place because with him that was a national championship caliber squad but the combination of Bielema and a couple of hail mary meltdowns killed them,
Had they had him a couple of more years there's no question in my mind they could have competed for a NC.
I'm not saying they need to have someone of Wilson's ability, but they can't have someone as bad as Stave either. I would bet that if you gave Big Ten coaches a chance to pick their starting QB that Stave wouldn't even finish in the upper half of the conference. That says a lot considering that it's not like the conference is littered with great QBs.
Here's hoping either Houston or McEvoy earn the job and make an impact next year.
Perhaps Wilson has changed perceptions a bit, but if I were a QB prospect with a big arm Wisconsin wouldn't be anywhere near the top of my list of schools. Stave's inconsistency was maddening. He'd make a difficult throw and then turn right around a miss badly on an easy one you'd expect a high schooler to make.
Don't need Wilson but Stave simply isn't good enough for a Big Ten starter if you want to contend.
