I remember when the Badgers used to have great special teams. Not so much the last couple of years.
At least the Badger defense is playing well.

I’m not ready to dismiss Mertz but I envisioned much more.
Somewhere Jack Coan is smiling. Mertz' ceiling is higher, but Coan's floor was much higher.
Mertz is three years in the system now and, other than Game 1 last year, he has been ordinary at best. He seems to struggle reading defenses and makes questionable decisions.
Penn State's defense has been good. But it's been about 50/50 in terms of their defense relative to Mertz' play.
That tells you a lot about how the coaches feel about Mertz. 1 minute left and the ball and you hand off because they are worried that Mertz will screw up.
And now Penn State wants to have Mertz handle it one more time and he throws a duck 20 yards out of bounds.
Who is the back up QB?
Sanborn is the most glorious ILB I’ve watched in years. 6’2 235 and tracks like a cheetah. He’s so good.
I realize it’s the first game and Penn State is a decent opponent, but Graham Mertz has to play better. You cannot turn the ball at the opponents 5 yard line. Then again, there’s no guarantee our kicker makes a chip shot FG.
Badgers have had plenty of games early in the year where it just seems like it takes them a while to get going. RTFB and let’s get out of here with a W.

This is a game where one of the endless string of boring, game-manager type QBs that have been a staple at Wisconsin for most of the last two decades (save for one year of Russell Wilson) would have them ahead right now.
If you can't execute the easy stuff, the ability to make the tougher throws doesn't matter as much.
Penn State stones them again on short yardage, but the throw by Mertz on second down was behind the receiver and instead of some YAC for a first down, it's 3rd and 1.
Second half offensive play calling adjustments were also much better by Penn State. Wisconsin just kept doing what they do and couldn't execute it, Penn State went to quick passes and picks up 20 yards on the first two plays.
I like this situation…..let’s see what we have.
1. Bad turnovers
2. Poor QB play
3. A completely blown coverage
4. No halftime offensive adjustments on offense.
This is how a team you should be way ahead of right now ends up beating you 7-0 into the second half.
There is plenty of time left and the Badgers are the clearly superior team physically, but some things need to change.
