Judging by the way Mitchell was trying to climb into a hole on Dallas' last drive, I'd say that someone got in his ear immediately after and "coached him up."

That was my thought too, making me think no one told him "before" the drive what to do.  Maybe the blame lies on the rookie QB not passing along the message. Still, seems like something a head coach should prioritize communicating seeing as the game depends on it.

The reason the Niners are consistently good on defense is they know how to draft fucking players. Great players make average coordinators look great.

Specifically, on the defensive line. If you swap the Packers DL with the Niners DL, the Packers defense becomes just as good. Even Joe Barry looks good when you can get to the passer by rushing 4.

It helps when you tank enough to draft #2 overall (Bosa) and have a #14th overall pick (Kinlaw) lining up.

Once Gary went down, the Packers had no real star pass rusher. P. Smith is a good complimentary player but not a star. Kenny Clark underwhelmed this year. Lowry is an average backup, nothing more. Wyatt is probably a decent lineman at best.

Wyatt is a rookie to be fair. Same could have been said about Gary is rookie season..

For all of Gurt's personnel errors, he finally realized Lancaster and Lowery were unfit to line up next to 97, so he threw some high level draft capital at a position of need. No, he wasn't Aaron Donald year 1, but he did show steady progression...as did Slaton.

So in deference to the Packerverse fan boy "media" (Bukowski, Herman, etc), Quay and D-Wy were the best picks for the Packers in those spots...both showed a lot of promise in year 1.

National sports "journalists", especially those on TV, have been humping air since the Packers lost.
That gave them the impetus to start the trade/retire rumors, and dominated their programs/reports until Brady lost the following week, but the intensity increased...OMG Rodgers and Brady!!!
Now that Dak has lost, I'm sure there is pants-creaming happening.

This is all happening while the draft talk is heating up, and on top of other teams that needs a QB rumors, players that are going to be FAs speculation, and on, and on.

"We're approaching overload, Cap'n!"

The more you feed it the bigger it gets.

And yet ESPN and other sports sites are visibly aroused and slobbering all over the Cowboys.  The best part is the videos of Cowboys fans smashing their TVs and running over TVs with their trucks.

Kind of like  videos of vikings' fans, but instead of running over TVs with trucks they throw them through glass coffee tables at other people's homes.

Jerry probably wants to make a run at Payton. I'm not sure Payton would work for Jerry, but Payton coaching that team would make them a whole lot better.

I am not sure Payton would want to work for Jerruh the GM.   I get this feeling that no matter who coaches that team its the front office (especially the GM) who is holding that team back.

Could he turn Dak in to a clutch QB is the big question.

Notice: I didn't say they'd win the Superb Owl, but they would be better! I don't think Payton would want to work for Jerruh either. Turning Dak into a clutch QB may not be as tough as turning Cousins into a clutch QB, but it would be difficult.

I had the same thoughts though was also a little let down that they weren't going to have the opportunity to get that monkey off their back on the way to NOLA.  Had DAL beat CAR, the NFCCG would still have finally been at Lambeau, which is one thing everyone wanted - getting DAL in our house.

As I recall we got them at our house the year after and spanked them pretty bad. They were already a team in decline at the time.

How so?  What has Payton accomplished that the current coach hasn’t?

He hasn't won any more SBs than the guy they have now. But Payton has won his more recently (Jerruh's a "what have you done for me lately" guy), and Payton is kind of like Gruden: win big, disappear for a year, ready to come back charged up. I think Payton would take the Cowboys' roster and get more out of it than does MM.

The 1990's was rough on the Packers when they had to play DallAss. 10 games overall, starting with a game at Milwaukee in '91, then a stretch of 8 games, including playoffs, ALL in DallAss. And they won every one of them.

Bounced us out of the playoffs for 3 consecutive years ('93 and '94 divisional round, '95 NFCCG), and for good measure, beat the Packers on MNF in '96, again in the Big D, with 7 FGs (and Reggie didn't take kindly to that).

Finally, in '97, they had to play in Green Bay, as YA mentioned. I suppose the Packers got some kind of retribution from all the years of frustration, and kicked their ass good.
The last game was in TX again, in '99, which the Cowboys won again.

The arrival of Lord Rodgers led to the Pack owning their asses good in the 2010's. 7-1, including a stretch of 3 consecutive home games and knocking them out of the playoffs in 2014 (divisional round), and again in 2016 (also divisional round) after regular season home loss that same year during a stretch of 4 games in DallAss.

Didn’t the Packers win the Super Bowl the year after the Saints?

I also had that thought that year but after all of those losses to Dallas I just didn't want to chance it even if it was at Lambeau.

In games with huge differences in how good the teams are along the OL and DL, the team that's dominant in the trenches usually wins in a playoff game.

The Dallas teams of the early and mid 90s had some of the best offensive and defensive lines in NFL history.  During those years, the Dallas DL had Leon Lett, Charles Haley, Russell Maryland, and Tony Tolbert (with Deion as a shutdown corner). Their OL was loaded with HOFers or Pro Bowlers: Nate Newton, Ray Donaldson, Erik Williams, Larry Allen, Mark Tuinei.

By 1997, the OL still had some of those guys, but two of the starters were also Clay Shiver and George Hegamin. The DL had completely turned over and started Tolbert, Casillas, Hennings, and Carver.

When Dallas had those OL/DL in all those earlier games in the 90s, the Packers had no margin for error. Aikman could build a campfire in the pocket, Emmitt had huge holes to run through, and you couldn't run against their DL at all (allowing Haley to tee off). When those guys left, Aikman looked very average, Emmitt was getting hit in the backfield, and you could run the ball down their throats.

The lessen always is dominant OL/DL teams usually win. San Francisco and Philly probably have the best combinations of line depth in football this year. It's no coincidence they are the top teams in the NFC.
