Maybe 4 weeks will be "all" he needs:

Recovery from such a surgery can vary because of individual circumstances, but a hand and wrist specialist from a well-known sports medicine clinic in California said Tuesday that football players at positions that don’t regularly handle the ball, including an outside linebacker such as Matthews, usually need four weeks to heal before they can return to the field.

β€œYou want to make sure there’s some healing there, even if he’s going to go back with a cast on,” said Dr. Steve Shin, a hand and wrist surgeon at the Kerlan-Jobe Orthopaedic clinic in Los Angeles. β€œI usually wait four weeks to get some healing there and, at that point, if pins were used you can take them out and put him in a cast and let him play.”

Packers linebacker Clay Matthews broke his thumb on Sunday in a game against the Lions and is expected to be sidelined for some weeks.

Some will tell you they predicted calamity for Matthews, that it was inevitable.

Some will tell you Matthews was not the victim of random, freakish bad luck.

Some say Matthews was just another victim of the Chunky Soup Curse, in which those who choose to endorse that product suffer injury, failure on the field and humiliation. The curse is said to extend even to the mothers who appear with their sons in these ads.

Matthews is among those NFL players this season who have been seen in TV spots for Chunky Soup.

Among the earliest victims of the curse, according to adherents to this soup sorcery, was Packers defensive end Reggie White, who took that endorsement in 1997. Even though White started all 16 games in the regular season and three in the postseason, he had to battle through a collection physical ailiments.

Endorsers beware.

Believers finger Chunky Soup Curse as reason for Clay Matthews' broken thumb - JSOnline

Could it be 3 weeks?

Initial reports had Clay Matthews missing at least four weeks due to a broken thumb that required surgery. Since the surgery reportedly required pins to be inserted into his hand, the thought was that Clay would need to wait four weeks to have the pins removed and then would miss a little more time after that to heal further.

However, Packers coach Mike McCarthy may know some things that we don't. The Packers coach said that the team could expect Clay to possibly return much sooner than that:

Packers head coach Mike McCarthy told Rich Gannon and Bruce Murray of SiriusXM Radio that linebacker Clay Matthews could be out three or four weeks.
With most reports saying Matthews would miss roughly a month, many had assumed four games or more.
Certainly, nothing will become official until a later date, but perhaps Matthews’ timeline for return has become more optimistic.

Granted, we need to know more before putting anything official together in terms of a timeline, but for the Packers coach to say that Clay could be back in three weeks is a good indication that there are reasons to be optimistic about Clay's recovery from surgery.

This would be the first instance in the Thompson/McCarthy era where a player came back sooner than initially reported or what any of us expected - after having been tricked numerous times into believing the couple of weeks line of BS.

***  edit  ***

3-4 weeks today is not much different than 4-5 weeks last Sunday.

Kevin Greene on 52:"He’s going to come back and he’s going have all that pent up fire and passion for the game and he’s going to let it go."

K.Greene wouldn't say if GB better off at OLB without 52 this time, but did say, "I really feel good about who’s in my room. I feel solid.”
