This bit of reporting really suggests to me he's gone. It's from the JSOnline (which might be behind a paywall).

Basically, it looks like Attanasio low-balled him. Attanasio would prefer to go cheaper but doesn't want to be the guy to drive Counsell away. If he really wanted to keep him, he could have made him an offer in the 6-7 million dollar range and make Counsell turn it down. Instead, it looks like he made him an offer he knew he'd refuse.

Counsell, from every indication, still has interest in remaining in Milwaukee. He opted to decline an extension offer from the Brewers at the conclusion of the season, according to Jon Heyman of the New York Post, but the offer was apparently not in tune with what Counsell could expect to get on the open market.

That's ridiculous. It's not like Counsell counts against the cap.

🖕🏼Attanasio

Didn't the Texas Rangers just prove what a good manager can do?? Whatta dick

I'm hoping Counsell allows the Brewers to match any offer he gets from the Mets or Guardians?

If you really want to keep him, why not just offer him a big contract to begin with? The message now is that Attanasio only thinks he's worth what someone else is willing to pay him.

It's not like he's some unproven commodity (like, let's just say, Adrian Griffin or MLF when they were hired). He was just named manager of the year and  may be one of the few candidates ever that would prefer to live in Milwaukee rather than any other city?

If you really want to keep him, you don't let him out of the building without giving him your last and best offer.

Obviously they want to keep him, but at some point that resource gets to expensive to make sense.

I think you trade Burnes and Adams and and let the new manager have a couple years to be a teacher, WS in 2026

I think these interviews are more about Counsell trying to raise pay for managers. If all of these teams offer him much more money than they've paid in the past he's still raising the bar by showing they can and will pay that kind of money even if he doesn't take the job.

Yep, it was always said that Counsell was expected to give the Brewers the chance to match. This makes sense because it's a short drive home for Counsell. He might get the best of both worlds.

When it started getting leaked yesterday that the Brewers had presented him a contract offer that would make him the highest paid manager in baseball, I figured he was gone. I just assumed it was to New York.

The Cubs offered him a 45% raise over the Brewers best offer. Attanasio lost him over 2.5 million dollars a year. To put that in perspective, Attanasio spent 12 million dollars last year to buy part interest in a soccer club.

Attanasio is probably thrilled at this point. He'll spend as little as possible on a replacement (probably about 1.5 million), trade Burnes to save the money, and cut payroll to bone. He's got an out now in terms of Woodruff's contract since he won't pitch in 2024. I wouldn't be surprised if Adames is moved somewhere as well.

Yeah, I have to believe there was some bad blood between Counsell and management for this to happen.

Maybe the Josh Hader trade was the beginning of the end?  I know it was Sterns that pulled the trigger but maybe just in general Counsell got sick of the cheapness of the organization overall.

I thought it was pretty shitty how Mark A basically kicked David Stearns to the curb.  That guy maximized the roster despite being given very little to work with.

I also don’t believe for a second that Attanasio wasn’t involved with or have input in the Hader trade.  I think he made Stearns the fall guy for the negative fan reaction.

The Burnes thing this offseason was fucking ridiculous as well.  I mean, you piss off the best pitcher they’ve had in the last 25 years for what, 100 grand?

Then there’s Counsell.  Easily the best skipper they’ve had in my lifetime.  What’s 2-3M a season worth for a top 5 manager in MLB?

And don’t even get me started on the whole stadium maintenance thing.

Rumor has it Mark A spent 500K on some Hank Aaron memoribilia.  Yet he’s claiming poverty - or pushing the small market narrative.  Just sell the fucking team already.

I'm trying to imagine how you present this managerial job to candidates. Who would want this job? I realize there are only 30 of these jobs in the world, but it seems like you are going to be set up to fail.

It's a job where

1. The owner is looking to cut costs and could have kept the most successful manager in team history by paying him 2.5 million more per year.

2. You get to play the team now managed by the most successful manager in the history of the team 19 games per year.

3. Potentially one third of the payroll is devoted to a 32 year old former MVP who hasn't played at that level this decade.

4. The team just traded your 3rd best hitter from last year's pennant race to save 9 million dollars.

5. Your #2 starter will probably be Collin Rea, who will turn 34 next year and has a lifetime ERA of 4.74.

6. The team won 92 games last year, but will lose 3 of their top 4 starting pitchers. Management is not likely to spend money on any veterans to replace them.

7. You will likely be one of the lowest paid managers in the sport.

8. Almost none of the young position players in the organization have shown they can be any better than 700 OPS guys at the major league level. This will be at least 2/3rds of your opening day roster.

9. Your best player is a relief pitcher who will likely get a big raise in arbitration to a level where the previous star relief pitcher got paid too much for the cheapskate owner to keep even in the middle of a pennant race when you were in first place.

10. The owner is likely to be booed unmercifully if he shows up to the home opener.

They are a candidate for relocation, maybe sooner than we think. You subtract Counsell as well as Woodruff, Burnes, Adames, Canha, and Miley from this roster and they'll be lucky to win 70 games next year. Maybe Adames is here, but that's the only guy likely to be back from that group of 5. If you were trying to depress fan interest as much as possible to set up to move the team, you'd gut the roster and complain about the stadium.

The city of Milwaukee is fortunate the Bucks lucked into a drafting a top-25 player all-time with the 15th pick 10 years ago. Without Giannis, the Bucks might already been gone as well.

Lease doesn’t expire until 30? Those things tend to be pretty unbreakable. My only hope now is that fuck nuts sells. I am more disappointed in this team than at any point in my life.

They might be almost unwatchable next year. The hope is that Jackson Chourio comes up and is as good as the hype.

Otherwise it's going to be Peralta, Rea, Ashby, Houser, and some random guy as a 5th starter. Williams will be the closer and they'll have some decent 7th and 8th inning guys.

But the lineup will be Contreras, Yelich, (maybe) Adames; a bunch of Jim Gantner types that have never hit for power at any level (Turang, Frelick, Mitchell, Miller, Monasterio, Perkins); and some league average type guys that could hit 15-20 HRs if they got 600 ABs (Tyrone Taylor and Wiemer).

That really gets you fired up to go buy some tickets or purchase the MLB Brewers streaming package.

All the Brewers will get is a retread or somebody from within the organization. If a guy as deeply rooted in MILW as counsell is walks away from the Brewers it pretty much explains how difficult the job is. That being said, Chicago is probably the only other city Counsell would manage in because of its geographic location to MILW.

I watched the Braves leave MILW. 2030 isn't that far away. He should sell, he was only in it for the money in the first place. He can walk with a great profit.
