Kershaw is now 39 strikeouts away from 3,000. After him, it may be a long time before we see 3,000 again. Gerrit Cole is 796 away. His health will bear watching. Chris Sale is 646 away at age 35.

After them, there’s nobody under the age of 37 with even 1,800.

And Kershaw is still almost 2,800 strikeouts behind Nolan Ryan.

I would guess of all the all-time records out there, Ryan's 5,714 strikeouts might be the most unreachable. Rose's 4,256 hits are probably also unreachable.

The Brewers offense is hibernating once again.

Since the first 3 innings of the first Reds game, the Brewers have scored 7 runs on 16 hits….across 39 innings.

The Brewers have played the Braves well this year going 4-2 and the Braves currently have the final seed for the NL playoffs.

Against the other 4 NL teams currently in the playoffs (Dodgers, Phillies, Padres, and Diamondbacks), the Brewers are 3-12. They deserve a lot of credit for beating the average and poor teams, but they are outmatched against the elite teams.

It makes sense given the economic differences in baseball. With Yelich out (along with Miley) the current payroll of the active roster is 67 million total. While much of Ohtani's money is deferred, he is still eventually going to make 70 million for playing baseball this year.

The pitching staff is at roughly 43 million (Devin Williams gets 7 million and Montas is at 14 million).  The other 12 guys combine for 22 million.

What might have made a difference? - maybe having a guy like Corbin Burnes. He's a guy that other teams fear facing 2-3 times in a 7 game playoff series. I don't think any of the good teams are very scared of having to face Colin Rea, Peralta, or Myers no matter how good they've been at times this year.

They traded Burnes to save money and to get a couple of guys that could contribute at a moderate level this year and, more importantly down the road instead of losing Burnes for nothing. Ortiz is already a good player and he might be very good, but the reason they got him is mainly because they are likely to lose one of their best 5 players after this season because they can't afford Adames and they'll need another SS.

Give Attanasio credit for giving big dollars to Chourio that he didn't have to in order to buy a few extra years of a potential superstar at a bargain price. Chourio looks like a perennial future all-star. Contreras is an all-star and Hoskins is a very good one-year rental and Adames is playing his last 50 games as a Brewer.  But other than that, the lineup is composed of a bunch of Charlie Moore/Jim Gartner types. They are decent players, try hard, scrap, are easy to root for, and play great defense, but they aren't difference makers - Turang, Mitchell, Monasterio, Ortiz (so far), Frelick.

I know I'm preaching to the choir of small market baseball Brewers fans here, but the nibbles at the apple are going to be what happens over and over. They just don't have the elite talent to compete with the true World Series contenders. The only way that happens is if someone like Peralta or Montas gets hot and can dominate playoff games (not impossible but unlikely)

Adames is gone after this year and Ortiz will probably play well enough after another 2-3 years to leave when he finally hits his potential. They will non-tender Montas next year as well. Williams has one more year until free agency.

Well the Dodgers have had their way with the Crew so far this series. They do have a lot of good bats. Can the Brewers salvage something from this series when play resumes at 7:10 CT? Looks like it's on MLBN.

For whatever reason I like this pitching match up tonight. Hoping for a win.

Two similar pitchers in they both have had the pitch repertoire and talent to be top-of-the line starters but have had their careers derailed by injuries. Montas was 6th in Cy Young voting in 2021. His shoulder injuries led to his regression, .Buehler looked to be on track to be a perennial Cy Young candidate in 2022 after starting his career by going 40-13 with a WHIP under 1. Then he had his second Tommy John surgery.
