I think Caleb Jones is currently behind Zach Tom at RT  - but he's making fantastic progress in the weight room and on the field

https://www.si.com/nfl/packers...-makes-giant-strides

"With the Packers’ chefs whipping up a bunch of food meant to power professional athletes, Jones said he was down to 338 pounds. There’s no doubt being lighter on his feet has helped him on the practice field and accelerated his climb up the depth chart of a team that typically covets athletic blockers.

β€œObviously, he’s got rare length and I think he’s one of those guys for as big as he is – everyone wants to talk about his size – he’s a little bit better foot athlete than I think people give him credit for,” general manager Brian Gutekunst said on Wednesday.

β€œWe liked his play temperament coming out of college. You’ve got to give him a lot of credit. He’s made the most of his opportunities. He’s gotten himself in really good shape, probably the best shape he’s been in since high school. He’s done a really nice job, so I’m excited for him, among others, to get out there Friday and really have an opportunity to see what they can do.”

More on OL Zach Tom here with some film snippets

https://packerswire.usatoday.c...art-against-saints/?

"Tom looks the part in pass protection with his hand placement, balance, and ability to mirror defenders. In the run game, he might be equally as impressive due to his explosive first step and power at the point of attack. Even though it is still very early, Tom has the making of a long-term starter in Green Bay."

Goodson's knock is he can't run through contact.  Part of the same flaw that makes him not a good blitz picker.  Not enough bubble in the badonk?

The second thing that jumped out at me about Caleb Jones after squinting my eyes to make sure I wansn't seeing things with his height, was the size of his feet!  Looks like they're about 18" long!

Getting closer..  He is my guess.

I'd say that's pretty close.

I'd be a little surprised if they drop Helfin...dude has done everything and more than they have asked him to do.

Heflin's better than Lancaster...and still not quite good enough to crack the 53.
That's not ideal for Heflin, but its a very good sign for the 2022 defense.

I think I'd lean toward Chris Slayton over Heflin for DL6  - ya really gotta have at least one mean&ugly dude to be a respectable defense.

Justis Mosqueda with 10 questions on the Packers 53

https://www.acmepackingcompany...-goodson-tyler-davis

#5) What’s with the logjam at DL6?

"...Behind starters Kenny Clark, Dean Lowry and Jarran Reed, first-round rookie Devonte Wyatt and key backup T.J. Slaton, there are a lot of questions on the defensive line. Will the team just go into games with five linemen? Will they keep six? If they do keep six, who actually is the sixth player?

Jonathan Ford, a seventh-round rookie, has basically played the third nose tackle spot this summer behind Clark and Slaton. Jack Heflin, who made last year’s 53-man roster, has started as a 3-4 defensive end this preseason but has rarely seen playing time as a nickel defensive tackle, both roles that Chris Slayton β€” who was claimed off of waivers in May β€” has played significantly.

It’s a three-man race for maybe one open job, which should bring a lot out of the defensive line group against the Chiefs."

How much are the Packers spending for the 53 players that make up their talented roster ?

Slightly above league average on Offense
Significantly more than average on Defense

I think they're in the best quadrant given the other teams in it. Like if you had quadrant vs quadrant games, our quadrant would win. A lot.

almost time for @sschumer - Packer Fan HoF'r to weigh in on the 53

While we're waiting - here's a couple of comments to consider as you fill out your brackets. New PS rules ( old COVID rules) make it really easy to move guys up and back from PS.

"As a result, Gutekunst will have more flexibility with his roster, and he said very clearly that it will influence his decisions on players in the coming days."

β€œWe’ve talked a lot about it as we’ve gone into this camp β€” just trying to keep the 53 best players, not just certain numbers at positions,” Gutekunst explained. β€œBecause I think the ability to elevate practice squad players maybe allows you a little bit more flexibility than it has in the past where you’d say, β€˜I have to have this number at every position.’ Maybe that’s not the case as much anymore. Maybe we’re going to be able to be a little bit more flexible with our numbers, whether they’re on the 53 or the 16.

Time will tell
Many RBs look good in preseason...in part because its preseason. He's a dime a dozen little guy who is a liability in pass pro. That doesn't show up in preseason because teams don't often send blitzers screaming into the A gap like they do in reg season.
Can't see investing a spot on the 53 for him. PS ?  Yes, absolutely. See if he can be developed into Aaron Jones 2.0 with a year of seasoning/strength. But for 2022, the Packers already have a back-up "little" RB in Kylin Hill ( PUP)

Patrick Taylor is a bigger, more experienced back and has actually shown his mettle in reg season games. I think he'll win the RB3 spot because he's the only one with any stoutness at 6'2 and 220.

Taylor has shown he can run, catch and handle pass pro. Here's his work vs Lions last year - starts at the 2:00 minute mark. Not explosive, but competent in all facets and that's often the decider for coaches when looking at depth dudes.

Taylor is better at pass protection than Goodson is. Other than that, they are pretty even. I think Taylor gets the #3 RB spot.

Considering they plan to use two back sets to get the best skilled position players on the field, I'd be really surprised if they tried to sneak both on to the PS.

Its risky bizness for sure.
I'd love to listen in to the debates as they decide on the final 3 - 5 guys across multiple positions. But no way they want any of that shit getting out

It may come down to the PS bet -  and which one is more likely to get thru as opposed to which player is actually considered "better"

One more thought: If another team puts in an offer on a recently- released Patrick Taylor, he can go to the Packers and say:
"Toss me some more coin and I stay here on GB PS"

He knows he's going to be elevated and get some play time, he doesn't have the same guarantee elsewhere. Also knows the offense, talented team etc. But if somebody offers the guy a starting spot on their 53, then good for him, grab it and run.

from elsewhere on the internet

"Packers have completed their preseason earlier than other teams and they'll have practices on Sunday and Monday prior to Tuesdays' cutdown deadline. However, GB won't want to risk injury for guys who are getting cut...so we may see some guys not practicing and / or released this weekend. "

That looks pretty spot on.  Good job.  I agree with Satori on Heflin, that Slayton looks like the better prospect right now.  Heflin's splash play last night came when he was unblocked.  Other than that, he hasn't shown the same strength or toughness Chris Slayton has.

I wonder if, because Crosby may not be 100% by game one - or at all this year, we keep Achmed on the PS.
