It's been said multiple times now the longer the Packers wait, the more expensive Rodgers becomes. Though Flacco has nothing to do with The Packers directly, if he's given a deal near or at the 20mil mark, that only drives Rodgers salary further north.
There is no possible way Joe Flacco is getting $20 million. He'll get a $14 million franchise tag if contract discussions go sideways. And even that's a little steep for his career hit and miss play at QB.

The way this is playing out is pretty fascinating. If Flacco plays lights out Sunday, he's strengthens his argument (although he's still never going to see $20 million per), if he plays a bad game, he's screwed. The Ravens would love to see a win on Sunday with Flacco playing a bad game.

I just think with so much riding on one performance Flacco is going to fold like a card table. And the Ravens will look back thinking maybe they sould have had their QB under contract before it got to this point and everything ended up riding on the Super Bowl.
That is an interesting take, but I would imagine that win/lose, he's in a pretty good negotiating position. They went on the road, and beat both Manning and Brady. He didn't do it himself, but in both of those games, he out played both of those QB's. Furthermore, he has what 4 or 5 road playoff wins (I think most in the history of the game). I don't know if he is worth $20M, I hope he's not because that puts AR worth $30M. But he has put up some numbers, and is playing pretty well, if they win the SB, becuase he had a big game, I wouldn't think 20M is out of the question.

Overall I think $20mil for any player with the current cap is setting your team up to become mediocre. look at the lions - $47mil tied up with 3 players?! I thought this was a team game. Wink

Since 2009 Mark Sanchez has more playoff wins than Tom Brady. Ozzie Newsome is a smart guy. I believe the Ravens have over 20 players that become FA's as soon as the SB ends. He'll listen to Joe's demands then slap a tag on him if he holds onto his $20 mill pipe dream.

Joe also strikes me as a guy with a bit of an inferiority complex. He's made a case for himself being an elite QB in the past. Not surprising he thinks he should be the highest paid QB. Even though he shouldn't be, and probably wont be.

Nice pull. I don't believe he is worth 20M, I'm sure he'll ask for it, and if they win the SB, he'll be closer to 20M than 10M, IMO. Ozzy Newsome is a good GM, and he knows when to cut bait, the whole situation is pretty interesting. Some team will pay him a boat load of $$$, IMO, he's played pretty well, the last couple of years. Is he Top 5, is the question???

It's steep for anyone not named Aaron Rodgers

It is and I even cringe at the thought of throwing that kind of coin at a players as good as he is. But IMO there is no doubt in my mind that if TT and MM can place a quality OL again in front of him he'll destroy most defenses. That Rodgers put up the numbers he did with guys like Jeff Saturday (which made the entire interior line crap), no Bulaga, no Jennings x 8 weeks, no real RB until DuJuan Harris shows up, managed to lead the NFL in sacks, and still threw the fewest INT's in the NFL and put up excellent numbers tells you the kind of QB you have.

Think Flacco flourishes like Rodgers if he's placed in front of GB's OL and those injuries to his #1 WR and a crap running game?

Flacco is a flippin' idiot. There's having confidence in yourself and then there's just plain blind arrogance. Flacco suffers from the later.
Out of curiosity I wonder the last time one of the three highest paid QB's in the game won the Superbowl. Was it Manning back in 2007?

I'm pretty sure Brees got his mega contract after the Saints won the Superbowl.
Whatever kind of money Flacco gets from whichever team, he'll always be the same QB he has been--play well in 2 to 3 game streaks, play worse than Sanchez for 2-3 games. Rinse and repeat.
He's in a perfect situation for himself; he plays on a team that's very strong defensively, and tends to rush the ball well. Playing in what has been a notoriously weak division hasn't hurt, either. Removing just one of these variables would quickly magnify his deficiencies.
It would be interesting if the Ravens win and then get rid of Flacco. Remember last time they won the SB they ditched Dilfer. Out of 32 teams where does Flacco rate? Not top 10 qbs but maybe top 15-20. I suggest a similar pay to this class of qb
Rodgers, Brady, Brees, Peyton, Eli and probably Roethlisberger are the top guys, but after that? Stafford, Ryan, Flacco, Cutler, Romo, etc. are probably all in that next tier so maybe he is top-10. Confused
Gosh, I'd say after the this year Luck, Wilson and RGIII bump Cutler, Romo and Stafford from that list. And this fro, Mr. Veteran QB!?!?!

I mean this in all areas:

1. Raw numbers.
2. Leadership.
3. Team success.
4. Who would you want at the controls with two minutes left, down by 4, no time outs and the ball at your own 20.
Al Davis would give the "Mad Bomber" 20 mil:

According to Pro Football Focus (subscription required), Joe Flacco launched it 20 yards or deeper on 17.3 percent of his passes, the highest in the NFL this season. His "Accuracy Percentage," or completion percentage adjusted for drops, on those passes was just 40.2 percent. That slots him 18th in the NFL among quarterbacks with at least 25 percent of their team's attempts.

Incredibly, though, Flacco connected for 11 deep touchdowns this season—and he didn't throw any interceptions.

Link and a tip of the cap to Herm Edwards and Phil Mackey...

Joe Flacco: "QBs like (Kaepernick) are eventually going to have to become mostly pocket passers to survive in this league."

Maybe Joe is right. But you bury that thought way down deep for now. Henry is right, Flacco is an idiot.
Yup. They're going to have to pony up if they want to keep him.

Think they'll cut him like they did Dilfer? Big Grin

He's probably going to get the $20 million & if the Ravens don't pay it someone else will.

Rodgers is going to be $25 million. Crap....Frowner
Same as before the game. They won't pay him $20 million. I still see the Ravens using the tag on him for around $14.7 million. Which is about what he's worth.

Saw a report that the Ravens may have to use the exlusive franchise tag because using the non-exclusive franchise tag means teams can step in and offer two 1st rounders and land Flacco. Um, exactly what GM is giving away two 1st rounders AND paying Flacco $15 million per year?

One of the casualties of Flacco's $$$ demand is probably going to be Anquin Boldin. Boldin bailed Flacco out more than a couple times last night.

Just a quarterback away, as always.

Yep. Ever since seeing the benefits of a great GM first hand, I'm learning how nice it would be to have a "Home Grown Exception" to the salary cap for guys that teams drafted. Why should a guy like TT be punished for drafting too well?

The owners would never go for this as it would be one less reason to not spend money on the product, but it'd sure be nice for the GBs, PITs and SFs of the world.

I could see them franchising him for the 14.7. But if they don't get closer to 20 on a long term contract, then they are basically renting him for one year, cause he'll leave after his franchised year in my opinion.
Should be interesting. Flacco and the offense carried the day while the vaunted Raven defense got lit up yesterday.

He's not a top five QB but he's gonna get paid like one.

I doubt they tag him into the season. They can give him a more cap friendly deal even if he hits the lottery.
I just can't see a smart GM like Ozzie giving a guy like Flacco a contract that amounts to almost 16% of his total cap.

Flacco is good, but he's not going to carry a team on his back by himself. He's as good as the running game and plays that his receivers make for him. If you're giving one player $20 million he'd better be able to do the majority of the heavy lifting on his own.

Flacco had a great post season. But is you're $20 million going to that guy or the guy that's completes around 57% of his passes for the majority of his career?

Finally, if Bronco S Rahim Moore doesn't completely fail on a simple coverage in the final minute of their playoff game what does the conversation look like?

Yep.

TT is gonna have to work his draft magic if he wants to keep a SB quality team on the field while paying AR and CMIII top dollar.
I'm not worried about Rodgers and his contract. Rodgers just seems to "get it" and I think he is intelligent enough to see his contract situation from both the team and the player standpoint. I think he will go after and get what he deserves, but I don't think he will try to hamstring the team in the process.

He refused their previous offer of $16 million and now he's got a SB win with the MVP on his resume. The $20 million number sounds about right.
New hockey CBA allows for 7 year contracts (8 for your own players). Amount can't vary by more than 35% year to year and the lowest year can't be less than 50% of the highest year (if the last year is 10 million no year can be less than 5 million).
