Seriously, Why should Graham Harrell have a roster spot on this team?

He's not Matt Flynn or Matt Hasselbeck. He's nothing but a journeyman QB.

At least BJ Coleman has some arm strength.

Graham Harrell = Doug Pedersen. I've seen plenty

If ARodg goes down for a short period of time and the club needs a game manager type, that is where Harrell comes in. He's been in the system for awhile and should have a complete grasp of the offense. Coleman will not have that this season, regardless of his physical skills.

Now if ARodg goes down for the season sometime and the season becomes a lost one...throw Coleman out there.

If you are that down on Harrell, I guess they...could...go...get...gulp...a...veteran...backup...

NOTE: I am addressing this post as if it is not sarcasm. Not a sarcasm thingy deal...
Would you have a different opinion if his name was Matt? Big Grin

I thought Harrell looked jittery early and then settled down a bit. I want to see another game with him before calling it. I'd also like to see him with the #1 offense, not the turnstile/patchwork OL he worked with last night.

The contrast between Harrell and Coleman was striking - Coleman's arm is live

Harrell might be a serviceable back up/game manager if he continues to improve
I'm sure Harrell knows the offense and has the mental side down, but he just can't get the ball where it needs to go like a vertical passing game requires it's QBs to. He's not Matt Flynn and calling him Doug Pederson is generous. To be fair though, it was clear once he started throwing to a receiver who knew what the heck he was doing (Cobb) he got into a rhythm. Throwing to Curenski Gylleyin, Deondre Borell, and Dale Moss wasn't going give us an accurate picture of what Harrell can/can't do. That said, even if they had been able to separate and catch the ball, he still floated the long throws because he didn't have the arm to get it there quickly. Starting NFL CBs would have a field day with Harrell.

Not saying Coleman looked like a starter, but he definitely has an NFL arm and he was decisive. He didn't panic with the pressure either. He missed on some throws because I think he was going too fast and wasn't being patient, but I think other throws were due to wrong routes or dropped balls. He looked fiery in the huddle too. Reminds me A LOT of Matt Hasselbeck.
I think part of the reason Harrell played so long last night was so MM can get a good idea of how he'll have to alter the game plans if Rodgers gets hurt. It's pretty clear he's not comfortable pressing the ball down field at this point in his development.

If it comes to Harrell this year it's going to be imperative that the running game steps up in a big way.
Rodgers looked bad in his 1st couple years (esp his rookie one) because he had a terrible OL he was playing in front of. So he got happy feet. Didn't want to throw a pick. Stood too long in the pocket. And down he went. Rinse. Repeat.

Harrell missed some guys last night that were wide open. Where he strived was in the 2 min offense but that's exactly what he did all game long in college. He ran a spread 2 min offense all game long and little surprise it's where he did well last night.

If Rodgers were to go down, and you want Harrell to excel, I'd imagine MM would have to go no huddle and have Harrell in a hurried offense. It's where he's best.

Coleman's arm vs Harrell's no comparison. Coleman could be a good QB down the line. Just lacks experience. If GB sticks w Coleman, good things will happen for him.

Just a matter of time before Harrell is demoted to 3rd string...then likely off the team. Probably happens in 2013.

He started the game 2 of 7 for 4 yards.

With 3:03 to go in the first half, Harrell did play like a solid NFL backup. He went 5 of 6 for 67 yards, finding Cobb for a touchdown to cap the drive. He took what was given to him, zipping 28- and 23-yard strikes to Cobb.

Harrell also led a 14-play, 68-yard touchdown drive in the second half that ended in a Marc Tyler touchdown run. As the game progressed, Harrell seemed to gain a calm confidence. When Dale Moss fell down on one route, Harrell bought more time, rolled right, waited for Moss to hop up and found him for 14 yards.
Harrell early did not look very good. But as the game went on he improved except the packers receivers he was playing with had lead hands.
I say after last night performance cut Rodgers keep Harrell.
I was very frustrated with Harrell, but a lot of that has to do with how Rodgers makes everything look so easy. Harrell made a lot of correct reads, but had difficulty hitting the open receiver. That needs to improve or he will be gone.
He read the defense well-threw to the best target all night. Nice considering the pressure. Couple of nice passes to Cobb and his best pass of the night was to Curenski (7) on 3rd and 7 and Curenski couldn't handle it. He was definitely off, but not by much---I get it--it's like being a little bit pregnant, but he has good presence, good arm, understands the offense and is going to do well with game reps.
And he is not as painful as Coleman.
Harrell doesn't impress me, but if you give him a chance to work with the 1s, he might be good enough to get by if Rodgers misses 2 or 3 weeks. I don't think he'll ever be Matt Flynn. Matt Flynn was just too good and too expensive to keep.

I'm not sure why you say he has a "good arm". He has enough arm for the short and some of the intermediate passes, but watching him throw accurately deep was rough. Coleman has a good, probably above average arm. Coleman got the ball as far as it needed to go with ease, Harrell it was a struggle. Yes he did make the right reads, yes he does know the offense, but I feel like he has maximized his ability. Coleman is just scratching the surface of his potential.

The important thing to remember with both players is that no one should feel comfortable with Harrell or Coleman starting if Rodgers gets hurt. It's not like Matt Flynn who could handle things in a pinch. Since that is the case, I'd rather keep the rookie and not risk him going elsewhere.

Ha penis?

I'm pretty sure the Beatles meant it to be about a "fix", although I was referring to which QB had the better arm.

Wonder if this Rumor will get legs again.

With the new ownership in Cleveland McCoy could very well just be released. Wait it out and get him for the waiver price.

I got it---but I'm as old and un-cool as the two of you.

Wait.

Maybe we're the cool ones!

Absolutely!

From Dunne's Thumb's up section:

QB Graham Harrell. There were bad signs as well (see below), but Harrell showed poise during a pair of scoring drives in his first extended exhibition action. He's comfortable in an up-tempo, two-minute offense. That's what he's used to from Texas Tech. On the touchdown drive at the end of the first half, Harrell went 5 of 6 for 67 yards. He seemed to handle pressure better in the second half, too, making a few throws outside of the pocket.

"I love it," Harrell said of the two-minute drill. "In high school, we ran the spread offense, no-huddle. Let's get on the ball and let's roll. In college, we did the same thing all game long. So when we get in that setting, that's what I love to do."

...and the Thumbs Down Section:
QB Graham Harrell. While there were positive signs, Harrell also missed too many open receivers deep. To start the second half, he overthrew an open Jarrett Boykin badly on a deep post. And in the first half, he misfired on throws to Randall Cobb and D.J. Williams, both of which could have been big gains. Harrell said his inaccuracy was a result of coming in cold off the sideline. Another slant to Dale Moss was fired short, into the dirt. He'll have more exhibition games to work through it.

Young QBs will do that. I don't think we can draw many conclusions from the game.
I just watched the last 6 minute of the game---the pass to Demarco Cosby on 3rd and 8 and on the run was a very nice play...so his two best passes were drops. Coleman has the stronger arm, but Harrell is just waiting for his moment to be free.

Again, it seems Harrell had the right reads early but missed on his throws... then seemed anxious or was pressing and played poorly. Then, when he settled down he hit a few throws (Boykins, Bostick, Boykins). Taylor falling down cost him a pick-6, hard to put that on him. Once again the OL he had last night did not do him any favors and with CLE sending 5 or more A LOT he was getting flushed / rushed - made the right read but then missed his throw.

I still would like to see more of him with the 1s and not the make-shift offense he played with.

Look at the offensive players who did not suit up last night:

Kuhn - starter
Benson - I think he'll be the guy week 1
Jennings - starter
Finley - starter
Quarless - solid backup
Starks - vet and possible starter weeek 1

The rest of these guys are mostly #2s with game experience and would typically see a lot of time with Harrell.
Sherrod
Dominguez
Saine
Hoese
Borel
Smithson
Bennett

Just not ready to panic with Harrell yet.

I've got you down for an appointment next weekend

The one who might make sense is Seneca Wallace as he played in this offense in Seattle and TT would be familiar with him. Not a developmental guy, but could probably cover for a couple of games if needed. Colt McCoy looked OK too

Me Too! Right now Harrell looks terrible. He gave up more points personally than the team scored while he was in the game. Not good.
Scary part about Harrell (might be good or bad...not sure) is that he has this extreme look of confidence no matter what is happening to him and the team out on the field. He literally has a smile on his face at least 70% of the time. Kind of feels like I am watching Howdy Doody at qb out there.
