I wouldn't want him gone unless we were sure there was a quality candidate available to replace him, but I think Lovie has the best chance of coming in and turning it around quickly. Failing that, I think Trgo would make a good choice as well.
Want to know more about Trgo. We haven't heard a lot about him. Do the players play for him? Is he respected? It looks like he did okay in Carolina, but I haven't been overly impressed with our D linemen either. I don't think MM would put up with Ryan, and I don't think Lovie would want to come to GB.
I don't want Capers to be fired or see the team go back to a 4-3 if he is fired, but I'd imagine Lovie would come to Green Bay in an instant if he doesn't end up getting a HC job. He'd love to take it to the Bears right after they fired him. It's the kind of revenge scenario that players and coaches in the NFL live for.
Local Wisconsin reporters are sure writing like Capers is on the Hot seat.
If they do fire Capers I can not see them dumping the 3-4, too much change.
I sure who ever they pick will have to have a solution for stopping the read and reac stuff now in vogue in the NFL using the 3-4 defence.
Tough call. Lovie Smith would be funny and he'd probably do a great job. Truth is, I don't know who should replace Dom if he is let go. All I know is if Dom is truly on the hot seat in GB, it's deserved. His defense has under-performed quite a bit.
I honestly don't think it's that big of switch with the personnel. The only question would be finding a good DE fit.

I think you get more out of Daniels, Worthy, Perry as pass rushers in a 4-3. Possibly put Worthy at DE with his burst. Pickett, Raji and Wilson solid run stuffers and with less gap assignments you may see Raji in the backfield more. Bishop as a MLB, Matthews is going to be good at LB or DE. Brad Jones isn't a horrible fit for SSLB.

You've got some scrub LBers right now that need an upgrade. Change focus to DE and see what shakes out. You may be able to get away with less than stellar LB depth if you have big boys putting heat on and a solid plugger MLB and Matthews flying off the edge.
I watched a Cowboys game early in this season and couldn't believe how Fox consistently showed Rob Ryan on the sidelines flailing around like a monkey while completely ignoring Jason Garrett...and it was obvious that Ryan enjoyed the spotlight.

If Compers were to go, I can't think of a worse replacement than Ryan. He'd be the anti-MM. He's just like his brother, all show no go.
How would Lovie do with pedestrian talent?

The Bores basically shat on offensive development for his entire tenure, giving half-assed attempts at improving it, but really, you knew the Lovepump was only interested in building his D.

The Packers approach has been more balanced.

This is all an exercise in futility however because Compers is going nowhere.
That's a good point, but I really question whether the read and react really is going to become very widespread. There are only 3 quarterbacks in the league right now who seem to have the skillset to run it, and 1/3 of those quarterbacks are already injured and probably won't even play next season. It's something we need to be prepared for when we do run up against it, but I don't see where it will ever get to the point where we need to design an entire defense around it.
Not the biggest fan of switching schemes. Any thoughts on Greene? I don't know enough about these guys and schemes to make a educated judgement just know how what I see on the field is epic fails in the last three losses and a 2011 defense that was historically bad.
Are people seriously talking about Lovie f-ing Smith on the Packers' staff??? That's just ore stupidity. One, Lovie wouldn't do it. But two, the Packers are a 3/4 roster. You change DC if you bring in someone who runs 3/4 in a way you like better or you don't change at all. Unless Capers retires or bows out, he will be this team's DC next year.

The team needs speed. That's TT's job in 2013...
JSO piece that touches on this exact topic.

Should he decide to part ways with Capers, McCarthy wouldn't necessarily have to scrap the Steelers 3-4 system the Packers are currently using. Defensive line coach Mike Trgovac and safeties coach Darren Perry would be options if McCarthy chose to promote from within and keep the same system.
In this type of 3-4 defense, where the job of the d-line is to keep the 0-line off the LB and let the LB's run free to make plays, Capers suffers from a lack of talent at LB. Hawk, Jones, Smith, Zombo, Walden, Moses, Francois---they hardly ever make a play at the line of scrimmage or on the other side. Bishop can do that, but is a liability in coverage. So, Capers gets somewhat of a pass.

However, from JSO today:

"As players are wont to do, the Packers defend Capers and his staff to reporters, refusing publicly to turn on the same guys who helped them win Super Bowl rings. But it was also clear after the loss what players were speaking of when they said they were out-schemed and underprepared against 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick and the read-option plays he used en route to breaking the NFL record for quarterback rushing yards with 181:

If it is true that he didn't prepare for the read-option, and his only "adjustment" at halftime per Woodson and Raji was to "play better", it's time for him to move on. The argument against him was that his defense was always good years 1-2, and then got worse every year after. We actually improved from last years clown show defense, but the underpinnings of that improvement were always suspect. If it turns out he didn't prepare the defense for the QB and offense we faced this weekend, he should be fired.

Been a few years, but I recall an article from McCarthy where he touted Moss' leadership and assistance in weekly planning and preparation. What I got from the article is that Moss is a very organized and structured guy.

If you are saying this because its a demotion, fine. If you are saying it's because of the Bears/Packers rivalry, you're insanely naive.

So, we're stuck with a 3-4 for the rest of eternity?

Agreed with that.
There was anj article a few years back, and someone touched on it in thsi thread, that Comper's Defenses in teh first three years, are very good statistically (in the top 10-15), and progressively get worse. Check the numbers at all of the places he's been a DC, and after year 3, the D falls (statistically) very fast to the bottom of the pack.

If the reports are right, that very few adjustments were made, and that we were out schemed, thats not good. But let's not lose sight of the fact, that the team we played had MULITPLE pieces to beat us (Top 5 TE, Top 5 RB, and a QB who is extrememly fast runner). Throw in the a couple of better than average WR's, and there are a ton options you must defend. Maybe the game plan was to let Copernicus beat us, we executed the game plan, and the QB beat us???? Verenon Davis was shut down for most of the night, and Gore wasn't as shut down as we wanted, but he didn't have any huge runs. We didn't do a good job on shutting down their decent WR's, but looking at it from a broader perspective, there was one guy on that team, who beat us, possibly our game plan, and he did.

Grave Digger has refuted this a few months back.
I'm kind of floored that Lovie is even being mentioned around here. I don't see any way a shift is made to 4-3 unless it's some kind of hybrid, let alone one as stale as the Tampa 2.

And if we're going to demand a replacement in the wake of our Pistol Panic, why would we go to a D even more susceptible to it?

I must have missed that, GD is usually on top of his game, and I like reading his takes.
If people are worried about Lovie in a different scheme, look no further than Mike Tomlin in Pittsburgh. They blended concepts from Tomlin's Tampa 2 background with Lebeau's traditional 34 defense and it's worked out really well. Lovie is a really sharp coordinator and coach IMO, I don't think he would struggle having to call a 34/43/Tampa 2 hybrid.

Yeah -- I don't get it. He seemed like a hot commodity one year so they threw the Asst HC title to him to keep him. But based on what we've seen, how good can he be?

Internally, I'm not too excited by any of these guys taking over for Capers. They all seem to have a hand in these performances. But of them, I have the most respect for Whitt...at least he seems to have done a pretty good job coaching some of the young guys like Shields, House, Hayward, etc.

Externally, a guy like Horton would be great, but I don't know if you can get him as a lateral move. Ditto for a guy like Tucker in Jacksonville. What about Eric Mangini? He's one of the few talking heads on tv who actually makes sense. Plus I'm sure him and MM/TT could share some great Favre stories.

New England coordinators keep coming and going yet their offense and defense remain the same. I don't trust a former Belichick lackey.
People peak at different points in their life. I think Hawk peaked when he was 22 or 23. The Packers are draft and develop, who knew Hawk wouldn't develop past his college level of play.
