Fennel & Herman talked about this. Lowry appears to be valued by Packers as our 2nd best defensive lineman .... on a top defense he would be 4-6. I often encounter this with my basketball teams. On a good team a certain player would ideally be playing 10-12 minutes a game, but if he has to play 25 you are not going to be any good.

Compare the top 4 guys in the following years in terms of DL and edge rushers

1996

White, S. Jones, S. Dotson, Gilbert Brown

2010

Cullen Jenkins, peak BJ Raji, Ryan Pickett, CM3

2021 without Z. Smith

Kenny Clark, P. Smith, Lowry, R. Gary

Kenny = star, P. Smith = ?, Lowry = garbage, Gary = unknown.

So you have Jaire (star), Amos (solid), Savage (serviceable at this point) .

After that the drop is so precipitous it's fucking stupid.  You can't just go out and sign a guy that's been cut twice after a 1 year contract and pick up another UDFA scrub and call it a day.  Depth?  Not a thing on this team.

These putzes in the FO aren't even trying.

How much of a star is Kenny Clark? DTs are often hard to evaluate since their main job is to eat up blockers to let the ILBs make plays. If your ILBs aren't very good, it doesn't matter as much if you tie up 2 guys every play.

Also, because he's playing next to JAG types at best in Lowry and Lancaster, Clark's production isn't going to look as good either.

Clark is not an elite DT in the Aaron Donald mold (who is?), but he's a Ryan Pickett type.  Clark has made one Pro Bowl in his career, so is he really worth 17.5 million a year?

The Packers defense this year is probably going to come down to how good two guys are. Rashan Gary and Stokes. If those guys play to the level of first-round picks, all of sudden the whole unit is going to look at lot better.  If not, it's going to be a long year.

I think this team has found themselves in a position not unlike a team defending a title, without the title. Whether it's presumed or real that they will find themselves with the opportunity to take the next step, they will have a target on their back all year. Add that to a tough schedule, and you have your work cut out for you. If they went through camp with some swagger, all the worse, and there's a pretty good possibility that this was the case.

Joe Barry does nothing to warrant any type of trust, and with Z out the defense is going to struggle even more. A bigger concern for me after last week is if the coaching staff believed they were prepared heading into week 1. That might iron itself out over the course of the season, but stacking losses and/or bad performances could spell real trouble and we know other teams will lick their chops to get a piece like the Saints did.

Regardless of where the blame rests, this is the first must win game in week 2 in quite some time. They better show up and get a win at home. If MLF is worth his salt, he will establish the running game in full force tonight. At this point, it could be the only thing that saves the defense.

Listening to Barry's presser from a couple of days ago one thing concerned me. He was asked by Nagler why King, who MLF said is very good in press coverage, played "off coverage" so much vs NO. Barry went into a long explanation of many factors going into it, down, distance, match ups, coverage on back-end, etc....but then added "we like to give our guys some flexibility to decide if they want to press or play off to mix up the two"...King does not seem like the kind of player that I would want to have making those decisions on his own?

my guess is that mlf is challenging 20 in playing press.  20 knows he cannot handle speed, so he is deciding on his own to give 10 yd cushions...so now, the coaches have to decide for him, ie: pull him; by 20's own estimation he's too slow...there's no other reason that he would play off...that I can see...other than he cannot handle the WR...

just watched the 3 things with leroy butler - it's a good video - mistakes on 2 key plays were both 31's fault basically...also thinks 26 is out of position.  I wonder if the safeties play so daring bc 94/95 are trash...or if they really brain fart like they did last week.

Says in another video that they should switch Savage & Amos roles. Said Savage is being wasted playing deep where he has to "read" and "think" more, said they should play him closer to the LOS where he can use his athleticism to be aggressive.
