James Jones Value?

He'll likely be an unrestricted free agent, so trading him probably isn't an option. I like him as a reserve; he's just too inconsistent to be a starter on a good team.

Underachieving, potentially prima donna WR's are a dime a dozen.

I wouldn't trust him to make me a sandwich.

He's a FA at year's end? Well then I guess he has no trade value.

He still has value but it will take a sucker like the Corey Williams deal to get over his inconsistency. But he is FA. I don't think the Packers will cut him loose yet.

Unless he's franchised, he can't be traded. And he won't be franchised b/c he'll likely sign the tender before there is a chance to trade him.

With Finley coming back, and Quarless and Swain continuing to develop, the team should be ok with regards to pass catchers.

Losing Jones won't be a big deal. It just means drafting a WR becomes more of a priority.

He is inconsistent, but he puts up pretty good numbers for a 3rd, 4th or 5th option. I think he could put up better numbers if he was a teams first or second option.

What was Corey Bradford worth when he left? Probably similar guys. Lots of talent, but not as good as they could be if they put it all together.

Bradford was a one-trick pony. Go deep and watch Brent heave it. What's so frustrating about Jones is that he's shown he can run all the routes, make tough catches, and decent YAC -- but not consistently. If he had DD's heart he'd be a star.

If JJ is a FA at year's end, I definitely see another team giving him a multi-year deal. I guess a lot will depend on the tender the Packers give him, though.

I'm with you cuqui, jones runs great routes and gets open a lot but damn he drops passes he has no business dropping.

Jones, prior to this season, maybe had the best hands on the entire team. He's made some beautiful catches with solely his hands, in stride. This year, a lot of those catches are deflecting off his hands, and it's frustrating as hell to watch.

Prior to this season, I thought Jennings and Jones were our future at WR. After this season, I'm still sure half of that is right. I'm at a loss regarding Jones. If restricted free agency is still in play (not sure with CBA situation) I'd tender him at his draft value. If not, I'd probably let him test FA. Which sucks, because the guy has obvious talent, if he could put it all together.

If RFA is still a possibility, I'd tender him at the 1st round tender. If my memory is correct, that would be less than $3M. Meanwhile, you can negotiate down to a 2nd. His round was a third round pick.

Fond Du Arrigo....I agree with everything you said. Few guys as frustrating as him.

He has great hands, but he is inconsistent concentrating on the ball.

Being inconsistent would have been a improvement for Bradford. That guy couldn't catch squat. I was amazed when he got a contract from Houston.

Agree 100% on Bradford. I always thought that guy sucked.

He was really fast though. He didn't need no stinking routes.

I remember he caught a TD to beat the Vikings in the '99 season opener or week 2. Other than that the guy was a joke of a football player.

I don't agree with the idea he is a good route runner. He rounds off the breaks on his routes rather than a sharp cut. He has alligator arms on occasion and as we saw a couple times this year he doesn't fight for the ball. Sorry, all the talent in the world, but these little things are what take you to the next level. I'd love to see this guy take that step, but I'm thinking what you see is what you get with JJ.

i would tender him at his drafted round. Pay him the least you can while leaving it open to get a 3rd-4th rounder for him.

He reminds me of Colledge: good enough to start but will absolutely kill you at the worst times. Players like this are rarely trade for a day one pick.

I think the same thing. It's his 4th season; if he hasn't figured it out by now, there's no reason to expect that he ever will. I'm not saying it's impossible that he'll figure it out; just that there's not much percentage in expecting it to happen.

And like you, I also disagree that he's a good route runner. Like everything else about him, he's inconsistent and unreliable in that area. There are times when he runs a crisp, clean route with razor sharp breaks, and then on the next play he looks like he's running an oval route. He also has a tendency to occasionally quit on a route, as we saw in that interception against New England last week. That one arguably cost us the football game.

This guy has to go. He has tons of talent, and is capable of making some terrific plays, but his poor play has arguable cost us at least 2 games this season. I don't think we can afford to have a guy like that on our team.

MIN and/or CHI will gladly sign him.

Best scenario is someone falls in love with him and signs him to a big contract. That would net a good compensatory pick.

Jones problems is that he is inconstant, the Packers resigning him is dependant on the next CBA. Heck everything in the off-season will be driven by the new contract bargaining.
On the postive side tevery team will have a bunch of free agents, so it could be a wild off season.

Greg Jennings and Larry Fitzgerald both attend WR camps in the off season and play against some of the best CB's in the NFL to up their games.

They do this for free. With no press or virtually no press coverage. And they bust their butts in this camp not to mention OTA's, mini-camps, and TC.

And Donald Driver? His "off season" lasts 5 days. That's how long he officially takes off. Then he's back to working out and training 6 days a week.

It's sad because I believe Jones could be a #1 WR in the league if he had the desire. He has all the tools and skill set to use his big frame to shield the ball away from defenders. Much in the same way that Jermichael Finley does. Finley also attacks the football when he catches it.

The one tool James Jones lacks?

HEART

I like him - but at a lower priority as seems to be the consensus. He can make the big play and great catch, you just never know. I don't know if he is messin up in other areas or not (i.e. routes, blocks etc). Coaches and TT will make the call.

What did he have yesterday, two drops?? I have been cheering for the guy since he had such a great game in his first pre-season. But, flubbing passes and losing the ball at inopportune times has cost the Packers.

We can only hope the Packers staff gets him to get focused from here into January.

My take on Jones is he is very athletic, but does not have WR talent, IE crisp route cuts, fighting for the ball, dropsies on the easy catch, unaware of first down marker, etc.

I don't think I've ever seen JJ go up and get a ball over a corner or lay out and dive for a ball. If it does not hit him in stride, he's not making the catch. First drop yesterday was a back shoulder throw that receivers make all the time.

On the other hand I'm not sure how feasible it is to find a guy to replace his level of play in the 3rd or 4th round. If that guy can also return kicks I am good with it.

Overall I say let him walk. Don't need a coach killer. Seems apparent to me that ARod has subtly questioned his work ethic.

As a pro he has been very much how ammo and TwinRig described. From what I remember seeing of him in college he had the tough catch and made the extra effort plays. Not sure why that has left him as a pro.

My guess is it's called "getting paid". Some guys just relax once they've 'arrived'

Jim Jones. Anyone that thinks he's worth the jack has been drinking the kool aid.
