Saturday starts his free-agent tour in Green Bay

Amid speculation that long-time center Jeff Saturday is destined to re-join Peyton Manning in Denver, it could indeed happen. But other teams will get a chance at signing him first.

A source with knowledge of the situation tells PFT that Saturday is in Green Bay for a visit with the Packers. He’d replace starter Scott Wells, who signed with the Rams.

Next, Saturday will visit the Titans, who whiffed on Wells and Texans center Chris Myers in their effort to replace Eugene Amano.

Then, if he hasn’t already signed, Saturday will arrive in Denver to visit Peyton’s new team.

Saturday joined the Colts as an undrafted free agent in 1999, Manning’s second NFL season. Since 2000, he has started all but six regular-season games.

Wonder how aggressive GB will be w/him. If Saturday was that bent on playing w/Manning then not sure why he'd stop here first. Then again, maybe that's to drive his price up by the time he'd end up in Denver. Assuming GB or the Titans let him get that far.

Funniest damn thing I've read in a long time!
Big Grin

Come on now. They'll have thst extra $$ if they dump the alter boy.

As for Saturday, apparently he ranked 5th amongst Centers in performance last year giving up something like 2 sacks and minimal pressures. That he performed that well without a healthy Manning and considering who was at the QB position that speaks well that though long in the tooth, he's still performing well.

IF...GB signs him I'd assume a 2 year deal max.
I would think Ted's plan is to rent a veteran for a year at center. That way Ted does not have to use a first on a center. He may already have a few centers targeted in the draft. That perhaps by the end of this next season may already be replacing the veteran Ted brings in.

Just been told that the Saturday deal has been completed. Should have some contract numbers on it soon.
Years from now Jeff Saturday will tell his grandchildren that he's one of the few center's to snap the ball to two Hall Of Fame QB's. Good signing.

It free's TT up to find a DE / OLB with the 1st pick. Packer stock has more value than mock drafts. But I've seen more than a few with Nick Perry from USC being avaiable when GB selects.
I hope his age doesn't affect his performance.

He's been very reliable over his career. Good veteran leadership too. Nice job. Now we can focus on upgrading defense in the draft.
The last time GB signed a FA that wasn't their own it was a center. We all know how that went ........... TT is just trying to shake the youngest team in the NFL label.

Seriously, it is good to a veteran option there. Even if TT does draft one later in the draft, it wouldn't be a do or die pick. I like it.
Great signing. We can draft a center in the later rounds to replace Saturday. Ted can now focus on defense in the draft and maybe another free agent. I have learned over the years to trust Ted. I think by now, every other Packer fan should too.
I just hope he has the same impact as the other 36 - 37 year old guy, steve mcmichael, that we added to improve the line many years ago. Steve mcmichael showed everyone he was still a pro-bowl player and I am sure 37 year old Saturday will do the same. Glad we got younger on the OL. Great great signing. Maybe we can bring back Bruce wilkerson to play LT
Couple of good points I saw on Twitter (without directly quoting):

  • Pack play the AFC South this year, so Saturday should know those 4 D's like the back of his hand.

  • Pending on the amount he's given, it shouldn't offset the Wells loss too much in the comp formula.

  • He hasn't missed a game in 4 of last 5 seasons.

  • Saturday is well versed in the no-huddle.

  • PFF had him ranked nearly identical to Wells in terms of pass pro last year. Can't imagine run blocking is any worse than a wash.

For a one-year signing, I really like this pickup.
  • Welcome aboard Jeff, now get busy learning the playbook

Those really strange looking diagrams are called "running plays", I wouldn't spend much time on those

PS- Aaron has really cold hands

You must just live a miserable life. This signing is not the answer for the future, but it is a great pickup for now. We will have Saturday's replacement on the team by the start of the season. Now please STFU!
He was still pretty solid last year, I see no reason why he can't adequately replace Wells for at least next year. Hope TT uses one of those fourth round picks on a center to develop though. This is huge though, giving TT the ability to focus on defense with the first 3 rounds (like he should be).
Nice stop gap option. Likely got him for cheaper than Wells and should provide similar production. They can now not have to worry about throwing in a rookie center or Evan Dietrich-Smith(yuck) at Center. They can take a Center later on in this years draft and let him develop for a year or 2 as well now.
