To me Polamalu and Boselli stand out on that list as guys that should make it.  Would love to see Butler make it too.

Steve Atwater is interesting because he would struggle to adjust to today’s NFL.  He was great for his era but his intimidating style of hitting would not go over well these days.  Same with Lynch.

Can't compare eras.  Doesn't work.  Atwater was a monster in his day.

Q: Can you tell the story of the NFL without Leroy Butler?

A: No, you cannot, plus he invented the Lambeau Leap thereby engaging the fans closer to the game. Even other teams now go into the crowd to celebrate without repercussions.

LeRoy Butler = HoF

Fair or not I think Lynch's success so far as GM in SF could play into his getting in.  The voters seem to take after-career things into consideration (good and bad), even if they don't talk about it.

Butler had more interceptions (38 to 26), more than twice as many interception return yards (533 to 204), more sacks (20.5 to 13), more forced fumbles, more fumble recoveries, and was first team all-pro twice as often (4 times vs. twice). Lynch did make more Pro Bowls (9 to 4) showing how much of a popularity contest that was. Lynch played in 43 more games than Butler showing much more of an impact per game Butler made.

Butler was better in all these categories than Polamalu as well. Butler played in 23 more games than Polamalu, but his per game production remained better.

Short answer - there is no way Butler should not be the top player out of these 3 safeties.

Absolutely agree with you on this.  In theory his post NFL playing career should have no effect on the number of votes he'll get, but in reality he might get a few extra votes from those who are more familiar with him than some others.

100% agree... but I think there's some bias in who gets the votes.  Outside of Green Bay, guys like Polamalu and Lynch probably have more name recognition than Butler.

Assuming you are picking Butler to get in, who are your other 4?

I have....

1) Tony Boselli

2) Steve Hutchinson.

3) Sam Mills

4) Richard Seymore

When Seymore was drafted, I thought he'd be a bust. but here he is....a top 15 finalist.

Steve Atwater made it. Steve Mother Fucking Atwater.
Bo Jackson ran Steve Fucking Atwater over like he was a retired DMV employee at Walmart handing out carts.
Steve Fucking Atwater being in the NFL Hall of Fame before Leroy Butler is the biggest bag of bullshit I’ve ever seen. Steve Fucking Atwater in the HOF is a mother fucking joke. Fuck Steve Fucking Atwater.

Two things.

1) That level of physicality doesn't exist in the NFL anymore.

2) Almost every hit Butler made in those highlights wouldn't draw a flag even today.

That defense was amazing and he was a huge part of making it amazing.

I think Butler not already being in was a snub in itself, and today's vote was another one.
He should be used to it, unfortunately. He never got proper recognition when he was playing.

JMHO, others may vary.

HOF is slow to elect former Packers. It took Jerry Kramer 50 years. AR will probably be the last Packer for a while after he is elected.  Other than AR I can t think of anyone over the past 20 years that would be nominated.

Nick Collins was a better safety than Steve Atwater. Nick put up better numbers in half the time Steve Fucking Atwater did.
How is Steve Atwater a hall of fame safety?

Seriously. Why is Steve Atwater in the hall? This question is more puzzling than Jeter not getting 100%.

Bakhtiari may be in the discussion at some point. He's a plays a semi-glamour position and has already been in multiple Pro Bowls.
