Saleh was almost fired after the 18-19 season too by the way...then he was the next Chuck Noll...
There are two ways for a DC today to look like a genius. Have studs at all 3 levels.
Yep. Look at how "great" Quinn was with the Legion of Boom in Seattle. Pretty sure ol Dom or ABM would look like a genius with those pieces to play with.
It would be really interesting if the Lions hired Saleh and he brought along Mike LaFleur to be his OC. MLF would have two games a year facing his BFF and Bro.

This is best illustrated by these stats.
Fritz Shurmur DC Arizona Cardinals Defensive Yards Allowed Ranks (out of 28 teams)
1991 (27th), 1992 (19th), 1993 (14th)
Fritz Shurmur DC Green Bay Packers Defensive Yeards Allowed Ranks (out of 30 teams)
1994 (6), 1995 (14), 1996 (1), 1997 (7), 1998 (4).
Guess what happened in 1995? Reggie White didn't start 3 games because of injuries and was dinged up in others. Reggie started 16 games all 4 other seasons.
If you give Dom Capers, Bob Sanders, or Mike Pettine a DL of Reggie White, Sean Jones, Gilbert Brown, and Santana Dotson with LeRoy Bulter and Eugene Robinson at safety (along with two good young corners in Newsome and Evans) and Wayne Simmons to scare TEs they all look good. Shurmur didn't really do anything exotic, he just stayed out of the way.
Pettine doesn't have a Simmons.

Your facts are getting in the way of our armchair opinions.
Dimitroff is the second former GM known to be on Detroit’s interview list, along with Rick Smith. They also have interviewed three internal candidates and spoke with ESPN analyst Louis Riddick yesterday. All interviews with external candidates are virtual until the season ends. https://t.co/aiwYkjqhz4

Yup Just saw this. Riddick would be a good choice, IMO if you're a Lyin fan
Former #Falcons GM Thomas Dimitroff is expected to interview for the #Lions GM opening next week, per NFL Network.

Same thing happened with the Dom. He had a lot of talent on that 2010 team and then in 2014 after adding Peppers, moving CM3 inside and HHCD playing well as a rookie. It looks like Pettine has enough talent to be in the top 1/3 of the league. Hard to really say definitively if the D is still lacking because we are still missing ILB's and another DL or lacking a good DC. The answer may be on the other side of the ball.
MLF/AR don't have the best supporting cast in the league but they're leading it in scoring - by scheme+AR. Like many have said, imagine what AR could do with KC/Reid. MLF/AR really need more recognition than they get. What other NFL D's are better by way of better scheme but less than top talent?
Riddick is not the best color guy on tv but I do think his takes on the other shows seem pretty spot on. I have no idea if that translates to being a GM but he sure seems worth hiring to me.
Maybe he can be the next Matt Millen.
They still haven't gotten over the curse of Millen!
I know YA is laughing at my post but I was serious in saying Riddick would be a good hire for ANY franchise.
@PackerHawk posted:Maybe he can be the next Matt Millen.
If sounding like a poor imitation of John Madden meant anything, Millen would have been their Ron Wolf.
Say what you want about Jerruh being a clueless owner who thinks he knows how to run an NFL team...at least he hired Jimmy Johnson, and got fat on the Herschel Walker trade. Can't think of too many successes the WCF crime family has had when it comes to pro sports.
Riddick is the only candidate that kind of scares me. You don't really know what his style is, if he's going to be super aggressive like Lynch and Mayock, is he going to make a solid HC hire, etc. The former GM's you know what they're capable of, you know they're going to hire either a big name up-and-comer or a retread. The thing that scares me is that if Riddick is competent then the Lions could improve. Honestly I think the smartest thing they could do is hire outside the boys club, meaning Riddick, and then bring in a veteran coach like Marvin Lewis to change the culture. You're going to be starting over with a new QB most likely, so you need a really grounded situation to bring that guy in. But it's the Lions so they're going to hire Dimitroff and he will be fired in 5 years.
Not certain the fascination here and on other boards with Riddick. What are his accomplishments with the Redskins and Eagles? I'm not questioning his experience . But what actually makes him a good/scary hire?
Marvin Lewis????
Marvin Lewis is a good coach, I think his message got stale, but he had the Bengals a hell of a lot more competitive annually than almost any other coach in their history has. When he actually had a good OC with him (Gruden) then they were a playoff team. He's like Jim Caldwell, good coaches that need a QB and a little bit of luck to take the next step. He will be a HC in the NFL again, probably in '21.
I don't know if Riddick will be good or not, but the fact that there's no track record makes him kind of hard to predict. That's a little scary because he may be a guy that decides to mortgage the future like John Elway to win now. Retreads like Rick Smith are never going to make waves, but just look what Mayock and Lynch are doing. They got plucked kind of out nowhere and they've changed the culture on those teams. Both guys need to win more to justify any kind of praise, but they're certainly keeping things interesting and have shaken up their divisions. Only team to beat the Chiefs this year and 49ers just made it to a SB.
Marvin Lewis was ok when he had good coordinators but he could only get them to the first round of the playoffs. I watch a lot of the Bengals because my wife is from Cincinnati. He just doesn't seem to have the skill to push a team where it needs to be. Maybe your subconscious is trying to "help" the Lions.
To add, Lynch also inherited a good amount of talent and two years of picking in the top 10.
Looks like he was wrong on Giapetto. I wonder if he goes after Stepford this off-season.
I don't think I want to see Stafford in Shanahanny's offense.
People only remember his last 3 years which were pretty pathetic, but he only had 3 losing seasons from 2003-2015. It’s mediocrity for GB or PIT, but for the shit culture in Cincinnati (which still exists) and in that division thats actually a pretty decent run. I think if he took over LAC, with that QB and talent, he would probably have a good amount of success
ESPN MondayNight Football analyst Louis Riddick is interviewing today for the Houston Texans’ general manager job, sources tell @AdamSchefter and me.

Riddick then will interview Friday with the Lions.
Since we're taliking about Riddick
We'll use this thread for "Black Monday" which seems to have ramped up sooner this year.
From @GMFB: The #Panthers have fired GM Marty Hurney, and now have a prime spot to fill alongside coach Matt Rhule. Among the potential candidates: Nick Caserio (#Patriots), Jeff Ireland (#Saints), Lake Dawson (#Bills), Ed Dodds (#Colts). pic.twitter.com/9zWjDzR4NX

Her look scares me more than Nagy's.
It’s kind of hard to put Detroit hirings on your radar. “They hired who? That’s nice”.
What do you all think about Brayden Coombs? He just got fired as special teams coordinator at Detroit, allegedly for going against the wishes of Darrell Bevell this past weekend and calling for a fake punt. At least that was the final straw -there may be other circumstances behind the scenes of course.
There were rumors that MLF wanted him as our special teams coordinator (Coombs was coordinator for the Bengals at the time). Does this insubordination make him a problem hire? His players sure seem to like him. Could be an interesting option for next season. Heck, I kind of want him now!
I don't know anything about him, but FWIW, the report I read said he called for that fake punt without running it by the HC. It may essentially be the same thing, but that makes it seem more like a bone-headed thought as opposed to direct defiance.
Detroit's ST's are 15th in DVOA this year with what I would assume is less talent available compared to Green Bay.
Packers are 26th. Rizzi has the Saints 6th.
This was a really funny post in a Lions forum:
https://www.prideofdetroit.com...-fire-brayden-coombs
That's awesome.
And who would have guessed that there are forums dedicated to the Lions?
Hopefully featuring Lionheart™.
Saw this the other day. I know it's not as fun to bash the Lions, they don't even have their own SUCK thread like the other two little brothers in the division.
Tampa Bay has won the division more recently than the Lions.
The curse of Millen
Per @craigcartonlive #Jets owner Christopher Johnson has made it known internally Gase will be let go
— Connor Rogers (@ConnorJRogers) December 29, 2020
His hiring was a mistake in the first place.
And to give him that much juice out of the gate. Jets failure is as much ownership as anything. Fucking toolboxes.
...and there ya have it Aaron Jones....
Get paid $12-$15 million a year on the Jets & get run into the fucking ground.
orrrrrr......
Maybe $8-$10 Million on the Packers with a HoF QB & not abused over the next 3-4 years.
