This will be Interesting. His ability to recruit set him up for success in college.  Not sure how older, professional athletes will respond to him. Nick Saban, Bobby Petrino and Chip Kelly never duplicated their college success in the NFL.

Most times these good college coaches who fail at the pro level go to crummy teams.  Much like the best college QB's.  They are pretty much set up to fail.

I wonder how Urban would do going to a stable organization with a good roster and a proven QB.

As many of you know I live near Ohio $state and I have seen the majority of Urban's games over the years.  I am just not sold that he can well in the NFL.  From all accounts he is very hard to work with and he wears on his assistants.

He also is not going to be able to out recruit the other teams and win because of having greater talent.  I am not sold his offense can work unless he puts in pro style elements in to it.  For instance he runs the QB a LOT in his offense and that won't work for long in the NFL.

I wonder if he will have full control over football operations?

Pretty much every new NFL coach goes to a crappy team. The best ones coach the team up. The frauds soon realize they can't simply recruit superior players and bow out quietly.

Yes. A large part of what your record is every year in college is determined by outcompeting other teams for recruits 2-3 years previous to that season.

If NFL teams wanted to hire the best coaches to transition to the next level, they should focus on guys how are consistently successful at schools where they don't get elite talent. There are a lot of people that could walk into Alabama and be guaranteed to win 11-12 games every year if the recruiting classes stayed the same they did with Saban. Saban obviously gets good assistants, but every coordinator he has looks like a genius and gets a head coaching gig after a year or two. It's the same way that a lot of guys that worked with Favre or Rodgers in Green Bay got head coaching jobs - elite talent makes you look good. Sometimes they truly are elite (Andy Reid).  More often, they are just good coaches who get elevated (Mariucci, Mornigweg, Jon Gruden, Ben McAdoo, Joe Philbin) who were only successful afterwards when they had a good QB.

The same goes for Ohio State, Clemson, and LSU. Once the recruiting falls off it's really hard to recover. Florida, Florida State, Michigan, and Texas were all considered elite programs but they've fallen back to the pack mainly because they aren't getting multiple 5-star guys every year.

NFL teams shouldn't be looking at Urban Meyer, they should be looking at guys like Paul Chryst, Jim Leonard, Ferenz, etc. Those guys develop talent and are often forced to be more creative in game plans because their players are the same caliber as everyone else's. Saban is a good Xs and Os guy too, but Alabama or Urban Meyer's OSU and Florida teams could literally tell the other side what play they were going to run and still blow out 75% of the teams they play.

And I would argue in the pros the true skill is finding underutilized guys like Bobby Tonyan and winning that way... I've seen many UDFAs and low draft picks prospering on many teams this year... That makes up for the misses on the high picks.

Urb has a huge following in FL back to his days at U of F.   Make no mistake about it - this is as much about selling tickets as it is about improving.   Jacksonville isn’t exactly known as a popular NFL market for fans.  If they aren’t winning people don’t give two shits about the Jags.

So, we can assume that Tim Tebow's assistant coaching career will begin this upcoming season? Offensive quality control assistant? He wouldn't hurt ticket sales, he's obviously connected to Meyer, and it's possible he could be pretty good at it.

Meyer has already burnt out a couple of times. I expect it will happen quickly in the NFL where the games usually are close and stressful.

He’s a great coach but probably would have done better in the NFL 10 years ago when he was younger and fresher.

I thought Meyer had some health issues and that was one reason he wasn't coaching any longer? If that's the case, he'll find that the NFL will certainly put more pressure on him than any college job, even if it is Jacksonville. I think if I really wanted to coach that badly but was having a hard time handling the stress, I'd just go coach DIII or NAIA or something. Go where the kids play to play and the expectations are generally modest.

He did have "health" issues at the end of his time at Ohio $tate.  From what I heard he has some sort of cyst (or something like that) in his brain that can flair up when he is under extreme stress.  In his last year at O$U he slumped over on the sideline during a couple of close games.   This may be bad for him going forward because as someone said earlier NFL games more often than not are close and he will have more stress than he is used to.

Completely forgot about that new rule to give teams a draft pick for promotion of a minority coach.

Urban will be a one contract guy in the NFL, success or failure. If stress is a problem for him and his health he might be lucky to last three seasons, even if it's only Jacksonville.

The talk today in Philadelphia is the Eagles are strongly considering Duce Staley (current running backs coach) and Eric B (KC).  Some interest in Mike Kafka (KC qback coach) and Ryan Day (Ohio State).

This is a tough choice to make here.... Let's see....T-Law or Justin FIelds... Hmmmm Gimme a friggin break

To be fair I don't think he coached Fields and I doubt Ryan Day is going to say DON'T pick my QB 1st overall. Kid is going in the Top 10 for sure so it's not like he won't have something to recruit on, but things like being #1 overall helps a lot. The good news for Urban is that he walks in to a similar situation as Gruden: the owner is investing a lot in him and will give him as much time as he needs compared to a regular coach/GM pairing who would get 4 years max.

If I'm Shad Khan - The first thing I ask my new GM is who he is taking? There is only 1 answer if you're selecting a player. Only other thing I'd even consider is a monster trade for #1 overall.

My friends 6 year old could make that pick. What matters are the selections you take AFTER #1 overall.

It doesn't take a Jeenyious to pick the #1 pick. "Most important decisions of my life"

He didn't but I'm sure the two are tight, was my point.  I may have missed a memo but it seemed like TL was trending down a bit this year (compared to previous years) and Fields was trending up, especially in the CFPO.  In other words it was looking like Fields could be preferred by his school's previous deity-coach.  Just speculating.
