College performance doesn't always translate. Even for kids that go to your home state school. Borland might play well. But he had significant deficiencies that will likely be magnified in the pro game.

Projected future performance is the only thing that matters.

Not sure Burke was ever Big Ten defensive player of the year but you missed a number of other guys:

Ryan Kerrigan

James Laurinatis (twice)

Lamar Woodley

Will Smith

AJ Hawk

Lavar Arrington

Charles Woodson

Shawn Springs

I think a number of those players did pretty well the last time I checked

The thing to consider about Borland is that he was a proven 4 year guy.  He wasn't a flash in the pan like Erasmus James that had one good year.

I also don't know what "significant deficiencies" he had at Wisconsin other that he got dinged from time to time.   The guy can hit, tackle, cover, and create turnovers.   Is he 6'3" or can he run a 4.4-40?   Certainly not.   But I find it really interesting that the 49ers- a team that probably has the best LBs in all of the NFL- decided to draft the guy that has all these limitations.

The Packers maybe never really had him in their sights but this thought that the guy automatically can't play at the next level is utterly ridiculous.   We've seen plenty of guys that are either workout warriors or have all the measurables that flame out in the NFL.

I'll be posting my favorite scouting reports on players that the Packers don't take. Let's start with Bryan Stork:

Positive: Excellent size. Has shown he can handle big-bodied cloggers. Maintains good positioning and can slide, shuffle and seal off defenders. Solid anchor in pass protection. Uses his hands well to control defenders. Understands angles and leverage. Athletic enough to chip and work up a level. Good competitor. Has played guard and center and offers interior versatility. Good football intelligence. Lunchpail worker. The game is important to him.

I'll give the Niners a B+. Nothing says "I'm covering hit or miss no matter how it plays out" better than the B+.

Ill tell you who I think is piecing together a nice draft. Reggie out in Oakland. Good to see an adult driving the ship.

The Niners have had a very good draft.  They've added a lot of depth and Ellington is a good player.  Getting Stevie Johnson is like another draft pick.  I hate to say it but that is going to be a tough team to beat
San Fran didn't draft Borland to be anyone's replacement, they drafted a good back up/ST player. Are you going to ask Borland to cover Jimmy Graham in a game?  Or are you going to take Pat Willis out of the play to cover him because Borland can't? That would be a nightmare for a DC. People compare him to Zach Thomas, which is a good comparison actually, but Zach Thomas would also struggle in this pass happy league IMO.

ILB for a 3-4 D is where he'll end up. Wouldn't mind them double dipping and taking another ILB prospect with their 5th round pick

Uncle Ted making picks that make sense for the Green Bay Packers.  I trust Ted knows more about these WHO The Fark are they guys than any of us experts.  In Ted I Trust.

This is why I will go cut the lawn while Ted gets paid to stock the roster.

Makes me sick, I agree.  I know some of you guys only saw Ellington in the Cap One Bowl, but that Ellington you saw is the Ellington that has always been.  Yeah, small.

He's gonna be a good pro for a long, long time.
