Jason LaCanfora surveys free agency. Here is the Packers' excerpt:

ā€¢ The Packers know that Cobb's market is likely to get out of hand and have focused on keeping other free agents. They continue to discuss a new deal with the agent for tackle Bryan Bulaga, sources said, and I bet they get their man in the end. Same with nose tackle Letroy Guion. I'd be pretty surprised if they did not re-sign him -- his legal issues may be resolved shortly -- and especially with fellow defensive lineman BJ Raji a free agent. Guion did a very nice job thrust into the starting role last season, and the Packers are very good about keeping their value free agents.

Earlier in the article he suggests Jacksonville and the Raiders, with lots of cap room, will be making a run at Cobb.

Should be a really interesting game of poker, but Cobb's agent better have something better than the raiders or jags in his hand.  ALL they can offer is lots of money and lots of losing.

Yep.  Sure makes you appreciate the fact that there's a management team in place that handles all aspects of running a franchise.  We should never lose sight of that fact even though it's been a long time since we've had to endure the previous idiot clown show that was in town.

How does having $30M-plus in cap space now have anything to do with the wasted money they spent on the two crappy ILB's a year ago?

The point is that your post was really, really stupid, not that Ted is perfect.  But you know that.  You've puked up this strawman about a million times in the past.  Pointing out the idiocy of your hero was just a way for me to have some fun at the expense of your stupid post.  After all, it's all about me - always is.

Carry on.

Most teams would have resigned Greg Jennings and James Jones......but TT trusts his scouts to draft the right talent and his coaches to develop it.  TT let those two walk and trusted that Nelson would become a #1 and Cobb would step up.  They did.  That's why they can be $30m under the cap with a $100m QB.

I think he keeps Cobb and Bulaga.  Both fit the bill of young guys who earned a new contract.  House is the wildcard because he really hasn't earned anything.  His contract would be based on flashes and potential, something TT doesn't usually pay top dollar for.  I think he keeps Tramon and lets House walk (after offering him something like $16m over 4 years, backloaded).  I think he'll get significantly more on the open market, which is why he walks.

Something else to think about.......the cap is expected to get a huge boost in 2016.  So $9m for Cobb may look like a lot compared to recent years, but will likely be a bargain in 2016.

EDIT: Just read an article saying the Packers offered Cobb a $9m per year yet Cobb still wants to test the market.  Packers think he'll go for much more.  In my eyes it's down to 50/50 if he stays.  Solid slot receivers just aren't that hard to find.  Cobb was a great one but they'll be fine with a good one.  This does make WR more of a need and will add pressure on Adams, Abbrederis, Boykin and Janis to step up.

Talk about strawmen, where have I ever claimed Sherman was my hero/ I do point out he did some good things, unlike the binary fanatics who claim he was all bad and TT is god.

$30 million is cap room is great, but would you rather see that, or $25 - $26 million and another Lombardi in the case because Hawk wasn't failing in the NFC Championship Game?

This could just be media games with the Packers and Cobb's agent. Oakland is an easy target for an agent the connection with...the Packer connection with McKenzie, they have needs all over the place, and loads of cap space. They're not going to confirm interest, because they can't, and they won't deny interest because they are interested I'm sure. That means Cobb's agent can say anything about Oakland to put pressure on GB (like they're willing to spend obscene amounts of money for Cobb). I'm guessing GB is willing to pay what most other teams would and if the money is the same then Cobb will want to stay. Just a guess though.

Here's one:

@PackerUpdate: Packers are expected to sign Josh Francis. The undersized ILB from West Virginia had been playing in the Indoor Football League.

@PackerUpdate: New Packers ILB Josh Francis ran a 4.67 at his pro day. He's a good athlete, but small (6-0, 228).

EDIT: Looking at the total Packers' roster this is what I have at ILB right now:

Barrington

Bradford

Lattimore if re-signed

Joe Thomas (2014 R, on practice squad)

Nate Palmer (2014 IR from TC, moved from OLB to ILB during TC)

Josh Francis if above report is right.

And of course Clay Matthews will be moving into ILB from time to time.

Cobb and Bulaga are to young to be let go.  May have to over pay both to keep them.  House wants to start. The rest of those guys will be in free agency.

Beat me to it GD, I was going to say this in my post above. Thomas impressed a lot of the beat writers during TC.

Francis may be too small to be an every down player but could shine on STs.
