Interesting... I did not realize they guaranteed his 1st and 2nd year base. That was really stupid. I recall an article that basically said the Colts must have been enamored with him from his 1 game against them.

No, I wouldn't give Neal that. Still don't see someone overpaying for him (like Walden got), but I admit it is likely someone will give more than Thompson.

Neal is better than Walden. Someone could have made a decent argument Neal deserved a contract in the neighborhood of $3.5 - 4 million based on his productivity when he played. Which unfortunately is around 55% of the time. Mike made sure to get the news out there that he played 16 games last year while playing through a shoulder injury. So where was that grit the previous 3 years?

DeAndre Leavy will make $3.2 million this year. He's a better OLB than Neal. Neal is worth $2.0 - $2.5 tops. Too much injury risk with the guy. I'm not sure anyone offers him more than $2.5 either.

Mike Neal commented that he's a midwest guy and prefers to stay in the area. Born in ShoelessJoeland and played at Purdue and GB. He's not likely to choose any of the east coast teams.... His injury history and tweener build works in GBs favor IF they want him back. I think he's a fine 3rd-4th OLB and part time DL

Let's not forget that the Packers are one of the more conservative teams regarding injuries.  So, let's not try and question Neal and his "grit".  Many were excited when he was drafted, and has had some bad luck.  I think he can be a better OLB, than most think, considering that he moved positions this past year.  Regardless, some team will pay him more than Walden and TT won't get into that bidding battle.

I was at the SF game in 2009 when Kampman and Harris played their last games as Packers. In 2011, I was at the KC game where Sherrod had the horrific injury that basically has f'd his career up until present time. I'm really glad I wasn't there to see the Finley thing unfold. That was scary enough on TV.

Like a coordinator the agents seem to have made an adjustment too. The Tramon Williams-Jordy Nelson like extensions are going to be harder to come by.

I am more worried about ED Smith at C than Shields to be honest. Shields was still the 2nd best corner in a terrible secondary and he's missed 8 games due to injury the past couple of years. He plays in a division full of gigantic WR's. Its something that I believe influences the Packers stance. Inconsiderate of them because it runs contrary to the media belief he would be their priority. But these are the same people who speculated Matt Flynn might be franchised.

I have a hard time believing TT is just "letting Shields walk".  If "tightwad ted" has shown anything over the past few years, it is that he values/pays young, in house talent at or over fair market value.  Need proof?  Look at the contracts paid to Sitton, Lang, Hawk, BJones, Burnett, TWilliams, Bishop, Rodgers, and Matthews, and the reported offers to Jennings and Raji.  If Shields walks, no one let him walk.  He is/was made a fair offer.

And he would be crazy not to.  He's already got 4 years of league wear and tear on him playing for the lowest salary a player can get, coming in as a udfa.  He's paid his dues to get to where he's at.  Ted did not lowball him.  Chances are, he has at best 6 years of earning potential left.  He would be crazy and Rosenhaus would be doing him a disservice to allow him to sign any contract without first shopping around unless the Packers offer blew him away.  He is going to look around, and he should.
