From PFT:

One of the top free agent cornerbacks is off the market.

The Packers and cornerback Sam Shields have reached a four-year, $39 million contract, a league source told PFT’s Mike Florio on Saturday.

Shields will receive a $12.5 million signing bonus, and his 2014 compensation is $15 million. By the second season, Shields is slated to have made $21 million, and the deal is worth $30 million through 2016.

Lot of money but it's heavily front-loaded and signing bonus isn't too bad. He's an improving player who is just entering his prime, so you figure his best production is in front of him

It's more than I'd like to have seen, but I'm glad he's back. Now to add some more help to the D and NOT go a 3rd straight year with Hawk/Jones as their ILB

I think TT will now sit on things and see how they develop with Raji, EDS, Jones, etc. He may be thinking he can replace Raji with Worthy and/or a draft pick, EDS with Tretter, and Jones with Boykin. Pickett and Kuhn he may want to sign because they will come cheap and they probably don't want to start over after this long in GB.

Glad we got Shields re-signed but I was hoping for 4 years more in 24-28 million range. (I realize with the structuring and contract games there's a lot more to it than just the gross number.) He's the one D player that I wanted to keep the most but that's a lot of change just to keep part of what I still consider a sucky D status quo. Hopefully between the rest of free agency, the draft, and getting some guys healthy well figure out a way to make some serious improvements on that side of the ball.

This may be off a little but as of right now with the new Shields deal I think our bottom of the barrel defense counts more against the 2014 cap then our upper tier offense does. Somewhere around 53.5 for the offense and about 56 for defense. That seems to be pretty wacked to me based on actual performance. Oh well, glad he's signed. Sam should send gift baskets to Calvin Johnson, Brandon Marshall, Alshon Jeffery and Cordarrelle Patterson.

"Leg humpers would be pissing and moaning if he walked.   Now leg humpers - we overpaid."

Can you be a little more of a drama queen? I don't see anyone jumping off the ledge or having an outright hissy fit about the contract just because it's a little more than some of us would have thought. To a person I see everyone saying they're glad the deal got done and Shields was signed.

So what exactly is a, "Leg humper" and what are you thanking Obama for?

Shields counts as 15 million for year one, so between him and Tramon (at 6.9 million next year) that's 22 million between two corners for one year.  It then  goes back down to a more manageable 6 million for Shields in second year, and some gradual increases the next two years after.

I look at it as them giving Shields 4 million of the 8 million they were going to pay Raji before he flamed out....
