TT: Hi Sam. We're going to offer you $2 million a year for 5 years, sound good?
Sam: Gee Ted, No I'm looking for $16 million a year like Darrelle Revis.
Yes, I'm certain that's exactly how "negotiations" went down.
There, fixed that for you.

@RobDemovsky: Hearing the #Packers and Sam Shields may be getting closer to a deal. Perhaps could happen tonight.
Major Edit:
@RosenhausSports: Congrats to RSR client Sam Shields & the Green Bay Packers on the new contract!
From PFT:
One of the top free agent cornerbacks is off the market.
The Packers and cornerback Sam Shields have reached a four-year, $39 million contract, a league source told PFTâs Mike Florio on Saturday.
Shields will receive a $12.5 million signing bonus, and his 2014 compensation is $15 million. By the second season, Shields is slated to have made $21 million, and the deal is worth $30 million through 2016.
more money than I like
but if it means they cut AJ Hawk, I like it.
We knew it wouldn't be cheap.
I'm very glad to see this deal get done.
Nice deal, but rather high. Hope he continues to tackle, and stay healthy.
Lot of money but it's heavily front-loaded and signing bonus isn't too bad. He's an improving player who is just entering his prime, so you figure his best production is in front of him
It's more than I'd like to have seen, but I'm glad he's back. Now to add some more help to the D and NOT go a 3rd straight year with Hawk/Jones as their ILB
He would have gotten that on the open market, so sign him and bitch about the money or let him walk and bitch that we didn't pay him what team X paid him, (which would be approx. the same contract).
Glad TT got it done.
He'll account for only $5.6 mill against the cap, so Pack still have a good $28 mill or so left to spend
With the project rapid increase in the cap I think the packers may of gotten a barging on Shields. I think we will all be surprise with the amount some free agents will get this year.
I think TT will now sit on things and see how they develop with Raji, EDS, Jones, etc. He may be thinking he can replace Raji with Worthy and/or a draft pick, EDS with Tretter, and Jones with Boykin. Pickett and Kuhn he may want to sign because they will come cheap and they probably don't want to start over after this long in GB.
Glad we got Shields re-signed but I was hoping for 4 years more in 24-28 million range. (I realize with the structuring and contract games there's a lot more to it than just the gross number.) He's the one D player that I wanted to keep the most but that's a lot of change just to keep part of what I still consider a sucky D status quo. Hopefully between the rest of free agency, the draft, and getting some guys healthy well figure out a way to make some serious improvements on that side of the ball.
This may be off a little but as of right now with the new Shields deal I think our bottom of the barrel defense counts more against the 2014 cap then our upper tier offense does. Somewhere around 53.5 for the offense and about 56 for defense. That seems to be pretty wacked to me based on actual performance. Oh well, glad he's signed. Sam should send gift baskets to Calvin Johnson, Brandon Marshall, Alshon Jeffery and Cordarrelle Patterson.
Second-highest paid CB in the league. Ouch, though he likely falls to four when Verner signs and Sherman gets his new deal.
Glad Shields is staying. Who knows whether it was too much to pay at this point. I would like EDS signed. Kuhn too but EDS is more important. Back to Shields, what a contract for a guy who went undrafted and signed for the minimum and a $7,500 bonus.
To me it looks as thought Ted let the market set the price for Shields and match the best offer. I wonder if he is doing this with other players, perhaps even with some free agents safeties. The next few days should tell the story.
Shields signing should have it's own thread, no?
Pumped to see @ShieldSam37 is gonna be a Packer for years to come! Excellent player and teammate.
26 year old big game cover corner.
He got paid what the market was calling for.
Keep and reward your own.
Leg humpers would be pissing and moaning if he walked. Now leg humpers - we overpaid.
thanks obama
IC....
Hateful.
I need a link to believe anything you post.
"Leg humpers would be pissing and moaning if he walked. Now leg humpers - we overpaid."
Can you be a little more of a drama queen? I don't see anyone jumping off the ledge or having an outright hissy fit about the contract just because it's a little more than some of us would have thought. To a person I see everyone saying they're glad the deal got done and Shields was signed.
So what exactly is a, "Leg humper" and what are you thanking Obama for?
TT true to his word and signing his own. Shields is as worth it as anyone. Big play corner who shines at the most opportune times.
This IS big news....hit USA today....Green Bay Packers keep CB Sam Shields in fold glad he's a Packer and don't care how much he cost..... defense....and it might start with guys like him.
Shields counts as 15 million for year one, so between him and Tramon (at 6.9 million next year) that's 22 million between two corners for one year. It then goes back down to a more manageable 6 million for Shields in second year, and some gradual increases the next two years after.
I look at it as them giving Shields 4 million of the 8 million they were going to pay Raji before he flamed out....

Very inconsiderate of the Packer front office.
Nice deal, but rather high. Hope he continues to tackle, and stay healthy.
Agreed. I think they overpaid for an ascending player. Perhaps TT paid for his future performance.
Daryn Colledge....gone from Atlanta....do we want him back??Twitter / DarynColledge71: Wanna thank you the fans and ...
Looking at the number$, this appears to be a good deal for GB. If Shields plays out this contract they will got more than their money's worth.
What a story TT and his crew have to tell any UDFA they want from now on.
