Rodgers is about encouraging the guys on the team, even the scrubs.  No sense in telling a guy the cold hard facts that it took him 4 years to reach mediocre status at the hands of the master cog maker and that's about as good as it gets.

It takes a lot to sustain greatness. Muscles constantly churn through fuel, demanding more and more with every mile, rep and snap. Because your muscles break down carbs quicker than they break down fats, carbs provide a faster, more efficient fuel for muscles engaging in sport.

It sounds like Ha Ha is playing on the same side as Burnett early on in camp,

I wouldn't be surprised if Hyde and Ha Ha are your two starting safeties week 1.

It's a certainty that one of the two best safeties on the roster isn't named Morgan Burnett.  The question is, what's the name of the other of those two?

I don't agree with the call to bench Burnett.  He clearly needs to improve on his play from last year but this is the same thing we saw from Collins early in his career.  Collins had to play with Marquand Manuel and Mark Roman his first few years in the league and it clearly affected his play.  I'm not going to pull up the threads but I remember a lot of people on this board calling to bench Collins in his first 3-4 years.

Burnett hasn't played with an NFL caliber safety since Collins went down.  I know it's crazy......but pretty good chance it's affected Burnett's play when the guys lined up next to him are so terrible that one was cut during the year and the other wasn't even tendered at the lowest level.  How about we wait and see before we bench Burnett for a rookie and a guy who has never played safety in the NFL.

Burnett also makes calls in the backfield.

100% accurate on Collins.

Burnett starts & when he begins picking of the ball... the gnashers of teeth in this thread well be long forgotten.

I felt last year that Burnett got caught between a two bad choices because he had no idea where the other guy was going, so he had to wait on the QB to see if he needed to do the other guy's job or his own. As a result, he got caught out of position a lot. If he would have continued with his assignment, he probably would have been in the correct position and we would be complaining more about other guys. Because Burnett was stuck in no-man's land, he's an easy target to complain about.

That said, I'll be mighty disappointed if he continues his indecision this year. He just has to do his job. I would hope that Hyde or HaHa or whomever is more assignment-sure.

Here's a recap from Bad Bob on Burnett from Jan 2014:

Morgan Burnett: STATS came up with a category called "Ballhawks," which ranks all defensive players on their total of sacks, interceptions, passes defensed and forced fumbles. Burnett tied for 158th place with five despite playing 82.6% of the snaps. When the Packers signed Burnett on July 15 to an extension averaging $6.19 million they viewed the four-year veteran as the next Nick Collins or Darren Sharper. Based on his play this year, they got someone like Marques Anderson. Burnett's effort and commitment are beyond reproach. He's the best communicator in the back end. He's a more than adequate athlete, has ideal size, runs in the low 4.5s and has roamed wide in the past. Burnett also scored 14 on the Wonderlic, and there remains too much hesitancy in his game. As he pressed to get near the ball, his tackling deteriorated to the point that he led the team with 17 missed tackles. He did lead the safeties in tackles per snap but had just one tackle for loss. He has a $1.5 million roster bonus due March 15. Grade: D-plus.

The hesitancy/tenative play is likely who he was playing next to. MM and Perry both said Burnett did a lot of looking to his left/right to make sure Doc Jennings and McMillan were where they were supposed to be.  Little doubt that played a big role in lack of plays/int's made.

But the missed tackles are mostly on him. And IIRC it was the GBPG who did an eval on him with help from PFF who broke down many plays where it was entirely Burnett's whiff on a tackle, a dropped INT, or failure to make a good stick.

So I will won't hold his feet entirely to the fire, but I don't think it's fair to give him a total pass either. His contract is paying him to make plays, hang onto INT's, and tackle.

Let's hope Hyde/Dix allows him to focus and make the plays he's being paid to.

2012 Report Card from McGinn

Morgan Burnett: Two NFL defensive players played every snap in 2012. One was MLB James Laurinaitis of St. Louis. The other was Burnett. In his first two seasons, Burnett worked alongside veterans Nick Collins and Charlie Peprah. This time, it was basically his secondary to direct. Over time, Burnett has applied himself, listened to coaches and learned the game well. He can be effective deep or in the box. He's adequate tackling and at the ball. Burnett was the team's best blitzer among DBs and ILBs with one pressure every 4.3 snaps. He was responsible for 7½ plays of 20 yards or more and three TD passes. He shared the team lead in missed tackles with 11, the same number as last year. Among Green Bay's safeties, he was No. 1 in tackles per snap (one every 8.3) but only No. 3 in passes broken up per snap (one every 81.8). He had two penalties, fewest among the starting DBs. Grade: B-minus.

I would treat the Ha Ha / Burnett situation like you would a 1rst round QB.

Start the season with Burnett knowing full well that eventually the future of the franchise will be taking over.   Let him learn from the sidelines for half the season at least.  If Burnett is playing well at that stage, wait it out until next year.   If not, put the rookie in and let him take his lumps.

I think it's a lot to ask to have two rookie safeties.   Let Hyde get some on field experience and let Ha Ha get his class room work in, then re-evaluate at the mid point.

wow...you are an OLD GUY, too.  I'm not old enough to be an actual listener to that show, but in my Radio-TV-Film classes we studied old time radio shows, etc.
That was one of the top rated shows of it's time!

I'll take the 'under' on that bet.

The play I most remember from Burnett last year was the TD pass to Davis in the playoffs. He was a millisecond late and I think a better safety makes the play on the ball.

I remember Collins' struggle to put it all together well but I saw flashes of a very good player from him when he was doing it. Hope you all are right about Morgan but all I've seen to date from him is a very average player who's got an overly generous contract he's not playing up to.

Collins had a good rookie season, then two so-so seasons in '06 and '07. By year four, he was a Pro Bowler. This is year five for Burnett (although he did only play 4 games in his rookie season before going on IR), if he can't get it done this year, he probably never will.
