McCarthy: Matthews, Woodson should play vs. Bears
1:23 PM, Sep. 21, 2011

Clay Matthews sat out practice today with a quad injury, according to coach Mike McCarthy, and Charles Woodson sat out due to his foot.

McCarthy expects both players to be ready for Sunday’s game against the Bears. He doesn’t think Matthews will practice on Thursday but hopes he’s ready to go on Friday.

Other highlights from Packers coach Mike McCarthy’s press conference:

*Concerned about pass defense? It’s two games. We will have Tramon Williams back. We need to pick it up in all phases, not just defense. We want to improve our play from last week.

*Confident in Charlie Peprah’s ability. Consider him a starter. Have all confidence in world in Charlie. It’s our responsibility to put Charlie in position to succeed.

*Nick Collins was big play safety, Pro Bowl player last 3 games, did a number of times on special teams, where he could play any positions.

*You have to have players that can play roles. If you pick best 53-man roster, you stick to best football players. Peprah is solid player, always has been.

*Morgan Burnett was player of week in Week 1. He’s off to nice start.

*Looking at possibly adding a safety to roster. Our personnel department is working through that. Could be a defensive back.

*Tim Masthay, don’t think anyone questioned his ability to play in NFL. Physically gifted, had fine performances down stretch. First two games aren’t where Tim would like them to be as far as placing ball. His placement will be big in this game.

*Deferring kick vs. Panthers, you look at whole dynamic in game. You talk it through as staff. We look at all the stats, talk about where we feel we are, and make call.

*Woodson plays four positions for us: corner, nickel, dime, safety. He’s an outstanding player. Can still play on outside.

*Scheme wise there will be carry-over from prior games. Bears have clear cut identity. We’ve played them enough times. Don’t think they’ll surprise us or we’ll surprise them.

Woodson, Matthews both expected to play Sunday

Green Bay - CB Charles Woodson has a foot injury and LB Clay Matthews a thigh injury, coach Mike McCarthy said after practice Wednesday afternoon.

Neither practiced, but both are expected to play on Sunday against the Bears, McCarthy said. The two injuries are from the game against Carolina.

Woodson's is a recurrence of a foot injury he's dealt with before.

Matthews won't practice Thursday and possibly Friday. Woodson will be evaluated in the morning.

Returning to practice were CB Tramon Williams and LB Vic So'oto. Both were limited.

Others on the injury report are:

LT Chad Clifton (knee) - limited participation
TE Jermichael Finley (ankle) - full
DE Ryan Pickett (foot) - limited
CB Davon House (ankle) - limited
RB Alex Green (Achilles') - full
S Nick Collins (neck) - out
LB Frank Zombo (scapula) - out
DE Mike Neal (knee) - out

let it go. even if a miracle happened there is no way a person goes back to football so soon when its a serious neck injury.

he is at minimum done for the year.
Roy Williams (is that really a loss?) is hurting (again) and Earl Bennett looks to be out as well. Not cheering Bear injuries but coupled with the OL injuries fine by me.

Cutler should have his work cut out for him.

Jay Cutler will miss Earl Bennett this week

We've been through a number of reasons why the Chicago Bears need to rebalance their offense away from the passing game. Here's another: Receiver Earl Bennett, the Bears' most reliable pass-catcher, isn't expected to play Sunday against the Green Bay Packers because of an undisclosed torso injury.

ESPNChicago.com's Jeff Dickerson has the details.

Bennett's history with quarterback Jay Cutler has been well-established, and the injury leaves Cutler throwing to a decimated group of pass-catchers. Receiver Roy Williams missed last week's game against the New Orleans Saints because of a groin injury, and his status is uncertain for Sunday's matchup with the Packers.

With Bennett sidelined, undrafted rookie Dane Sanzenbacher will see increased playing time in the slot. The Bears' two healthy veteran receivers are Johnny Knox and Devin Hester, who combined to catch three of the 15 passes Cutler threw their way against the Saints.

Meanwhile, even Cutler on Wednesday seemed to endorse a rebalancing of the offense. After taking more than a dozen hits Sunday against the Saints, including one to the throat that has him speaking in a near-whisper this week, Cutler was asked by Chicago-area reporters if he could make it through a season's worth of similar punishment.

"I don't know," Cutler responded. He added: "If this continues, obviously we're going to have a problem."

You are probably right, but "just saying":

1. They've never said what his injury was, just that the third test showed a "problem" that the other 2 did not.

2. They said he was going to be going to a spinal cord specialist to determine the best course of treatment. There has been no word on it since.

3. He is not yet on injured reserve.

We're fans right? Short for fanatic and all.

Plus some of us are still in denial.
This is a great game to give So'oto reps. Suspect o-line, offense predicated on QB holding the ball and absorbing hits if they come. Based on pre-season he's the best rush option at LB after Bloodline. So let him loose.

Roy Williams, the Johnny Z special.
Hopefully its a coming out party for So'oto and he hits Cuteler early and often.

GB needs to put someone on Forte in pass defense and stick to him like glue.

It would be nice to see Green introduced also on some swing passes.
I've ALWAYS loved Green Acres. It's absurd universe really laid the groundwork for all the great Mel Brooks comedies. They teach college courses about the brilliance of that show. And I live now right near both Green Acres and Pixley, which are actual California farming areas...

That's what I'm saying too... Let's not rough Cutler too much.

Agreed. But, based on the SB, that might be a fine line to walk. Just how much abuse he will take before calling it a game has been debated since last year.

As far as Green Acres goes, I liked that show too. I remember the episodes about getting their crops to market and getting a phone which was installed on top of a power pole. Nice dumb humor which contrasts nicely with the rest of life. Smiler
If I recall, Sam Drucker was the first cross-over star, with roles on Green Acres and Petticoat Junction. What a trendsetter. And wasn't it a bit unsanitary to let Billie Jo, Bettie Jo and Bobbie Jo bathe in the water tower?

Green Bay - Not a lot changed from Wednesday, but there was one significant development: CB Tramon Williams practiced in pads.

Today is the only day of the week the Packers dress in full pads and Williams, who took part on a limited basis Wednesday, was dressed in pads and taking part in most of the drills that took place during the open media period.

We'll know more about the extent to which he practiced after coach Mike McCarthy's update at around 1:30 p.m.

CB Charles Woodson (foot) and LB Clay Matthews (thigh) both sat out again. They were in on the field for the walk-through and Woodson even took his place in the slot on a few snaps. They were in attendance solely to familiarize themselves with the game plan.

LB Frank Zombo (scapula) was on the field in sweats. He's getting closer to a return, although McCarthy on Wednesday wouldn't predict when exactly that would be.

There was no sign of Mike Neal (knee) or Nick Collins (neck).

Smiler

Good sign with Zombo and appears So'oto practiced again today. Walden should still be the starter but if So'oto's active I'd expect he'll be in some definite passing downs. It'll be curious to see what kind of pressure he can generate.

Sounds like Finley is feeling better with the ankle. He's been fully practicing all week.

Hammy still sore.

Love the dual Green Acres drops in here.

For those of you who have never seen it----your lives have not been as rich as mine.

We haven't even mentioned the brilliance of Arnold the Pig.
