Didn't realize that the comp pick wouldn't have occurred until 2020. Gute appears to have gone with a pick he gets now vs a year from now..

A fourth-round pick is solid value for Ha Ha Clinton-Dix at the trade deadline. That's probably about what the Packers would've gotten for him in the compensatory pick formula had he left in free agency, but that comp pick wouldn't come until the 2020 draft.

So Brice and Whitehead starting safeties against Brady this weekend?

That siren went off in my head too.

Yes. This trade makes us much worse in the short term, but this is a team that needs to rebuild depth after several low-yield drafts. Might as well get the pick in 2019 rather than waiting until 2020.

Also, you get compensatory picks based on your net loss and gain of free agents. If Gute is going to be active in signing free agents (like Jimmy Graham), we may not be in line to get compensatory picks anyway. This ensures we get something for Dix.

I agree that Tramon seems to make sense at safety. He's always been a smart football player that anticipated well (the pick 6 that essentially sealed the Falcons playoff win in 2010/11 was the most obvious example).  He's potentially a poor man's version (or maybe a middle class version) of Woodson moving to safety for the Raiders. Smart football players can play much longer as safeties than as CBs.

Also the 4th round pick will be higher than a comp pick since comp picks come at the end of the round.

Well, well, well. Guttergood has some moxie to get something back in the next draft for Dix, as well as showing he has the power to get rid of those who don't want to be in GB. No more free rides, no more getting a "that's okay" after screwing up, no more Mr. Nice Guy GM.

It was becoming more and more obvious Dix wasn't going to tackle or put himself in harm's way. He was just playing to stay in one piece this year and leave after it to score another contract; given his play, it didn't even matter if the salary was lower as long as he got out of GB. I thought the change to Pettine might help him, but it didn't.

Basically, it seems like Guttergood is willing to blow up parts of the team this year in order to be in a better position for next year. Which begs the question: How much of this wreck-waiting-to-happen was TT's responsibility? Did he not get rid of malcontents? Whatever it is, until Guttergood makes his first really bad decision, I'm all for what he's doing now.

Bad value for us.  He's above average safety.

It's a 4th round pick for a 9 game rental. It's better than having him on the field the rest of the season and letting him walk. Get the cancer out of the locker room.

And he hasn't been average (much less above average) for 2 years.

Please learn to stop at perfection.

Safety will be manned by Brice, Whitehead, Jones and Tramon.      It's too bad Jones can't get on the field ahead of the dynamic duo of Brice and Whitehead.

2019 we are back to searching for our future safety.   Unlike TT, Gute won't be afraid to plug the obvious hole with a veteran for a year or two if need be.

We also have Raven Greene.

edit: and if HHCD leaves Washington they get the comp pick.

I think Gute keeps clearing out players that only TT wanted. You don’t give up on 1st round picks, 2nd pick, 3rd round pick that you inherited like this unless you never wanted them to begin with. My hunch is that other personnel guys advised against these guys and TT ignored. I would call this Gute doing a β€œsoft rebuild”. Ted did a fall rebuild in β€˜05/β€˜06, had to dismantle the roster, Gute just has to cut the fat, get some capital, and shore up a few positions.

It will be interesting to see how HaHa does somewhere else.  He just struck me as someone that maybe doesn't enjoy football as much as he once did and looked like he half assed it at times the past couple years.  Who knows, maybe he'll get rejuvenated and show something with the 'Skins, or maybe he just wants to move on with his life and do something else.
