STL is a tough test because on D they really don't have many weaknesses and they will test you which they did today.

Gurley is going to be an absolute stud and it's great they decided to let Foles throw as much as they did.   Our pass rush and pass D lit him up and forced a lot kg mistakes.

Didn't like the trickeration special teams play but they kept Austin in check on returns which isn't easy to do.  Randall made a couple of big plays on STs.

Defense was strong again. Glad to see these players become more talanted under the boot.  James Jones TD was amazing (appropriate use of that word).  Starks and Lacy just could not bust that big one by breaking a tackle.  Both were close a couple times.  Gurley is growing up before our eyes.  Very, very talented.

Negs- turnovers.  Hate 'em.  Injurys, hate 'em more.  Janis is a moron (clearly doesn't understand the properties of inertia).

How that team has won 2 games so far with the lack of talent is pretty amazing.   Hope they end up 8-8.  That way they won't get a high draft pick or make the playoffs and maybe they keep Cutler??

I think they're stuck with Cutler through next year, due to cap issues.

Negs:

- Holding my breath that these injuries aren't long term things

- I thought today was McCarthy's worst coaching effort so far, lots of stupidness in how they handled certain situations today.

Pos:

+ The defense was so good, they covered up the crummy offense and poor coaching decisions.  By far the best D we've seen since 2010, and frankly, their pass rush is even better this year than it was in '10.

+ That catch and run by James Jones was a great effort and huge play in the 2nd half.

+ When you can have a crummy day on offense and still win by 14, you have a very very good football team.

Positive

β€’  Nick Foles.

β€’  Pass rush/DB's. Heck, the entire defense.

β€’  Did I mention Nick Foles?

Negative

β€’  Do you know where your offense is?

β€’  Adams out a prolonged while because they insisted playing him on a wet field when he already had the ankle problem, and no one else has stepped up.

Re: Packers' offense:

IMO its not bad to get bitchslapped every once in awhile if you can still pull out a win. Aaron's play and pub has been so stellar so far this season up to today that it's easy for the offensive brain trust to rely on him to make plays running the SOS. What today revealed is that the persistent problem the receivers are having getting separation and the absence of a deep game has to be addressed somehow. It could be more RTFB, or route concepts, or whatever. But it needs addressing.

If this results in MM, Clements, Edgar and 12 doing some rethinks and making the appropriate tweaks then that makes the squad that much more formidable as the season rolls into the second half.

Rodgers has a bad day and they win anyways. Again. And while I'm certainly happy about this, it sure is a tad head scratching that his play seems to be getting worse. I'm sure he's fine.. I'm sure he's still #12... but he's not playing well and he needs to.

The front 7 is devastating. Matthews is an early candidate for DPOTY.

Richard Rodgers had a pretty tough day... But without Quarless what are they going to do? Bench him?

Another strong win. Need to get to the bye...

Pros:

+ Smothering pass rush.  Keep that up and we play 19 games this season.

+ Young DB's playing a big role and playing well.

+ 1rst half run D.

+ Ty Monty is going to be  league leader in YAC when he hits his stride.

+ Punt and KO coverage teams.

+ 5-0 even with injuries to key contributors.  Jordy, Adams, Lang, Burnett, Raji.

+ Walker filled in and did a great job against Donald.  Arrow pointing up.

Negs:

- No WR separation except for busted coverage TD.  We need Adams.

- Rodgers was off today.  Typically he makes up for poor WR play, not today.

- No holes in the run game.

One thing I noticed is the Rams didn't appear to have Donald and Quinn on the same side very often, keeping the line balanced, size-wise, so there wasn't an undersized side to run at. Brockers and Long (pre-injury) have good size to hold the point of attack.

Another minor "minus": As good as the pass rush was, the stat sheet doesn't reflect how good they were with only three recorded sacks.

It kind of does, though. The 4 INT, including a pick 6. Foles was harassed every time he dropped back for a pass

+

Packers are #3 in points allowed per game, those guys have a lot to feel good about

James Jones

4 INTs

OL did a decent job keeping Rodgers upright

5-0

-

Rodgers was off

OL did a poor job opening lanes for Lacy and Starks

No one but Jones could get open

Dumdum desperation challenge from McCarthy when he tried to overturn that spot

More injuries

AR didn't all of a sudden forget how to play....there is no one open. Rams played "pass" on every down & we couldn't run the ball...no QB is going to look good in that situation.

Agree- that Rams front 7 is no joke either. Rodgers didn't have the best game but the other team does try to stop him and the GB offense and they did a good job today. Fisher's goal was to disrupt the flow and he made things uncomfortable in the pocket all day. AR will be fine.

Like many of the folks here I think the Packers are depleted at Wide. (Tschmch I think is right)

Cobb I think is still hurting. Jones because of his age has his limits. Montgomery and Rodgers were thrown to a lot. I think Arron Rodgers had a hard day finding open receivers.

Just a question what ever happened to Janis and Abbbrederis ?  Is it that Rodger does not trust them?

I posted this in the game thread but it's worth repeating. One of the most telling stats in a game is QB rating difference.

The Packers have thoroughly kicked ass in this category all season. It's a telling stat of how your defense is performing as well.

Today? GB with a +59 point difference.

Mind you this was on an uncharacteristically bad day for AR.

Perspective is a good word for today.

There were only 4 games won by double digits this week (so far. But it's early SF) GB was one of them. It's hard to win by double digits in this league. The offense was very pedestrian today. And they won by 14.

Not many teams are 5-0, win by 14, and collectively sit in the locker room afterwards thinking about all the things they need to get cleaned up.

But you're right... He's not getting a lot of open receivers. But that throw to Jones was a good one. And maybe teams are counter-punching, and now the Packers have to counter-punch themselves.

When receivers fail to get open or drop balls, it often snowballs in the form of QBs trying to make throws too perfect when he does see a guy open. It's hard to say when one begins and where the other ends, or which one is exacerbating the other; all that we can say is that it needs to get better, for everyone. What I'm going to guarantee right now is that barring injury, they're going to be a lot better in November and December than they are right now.
