Congrats to Coach Philbin! Sad to see him go but so happy for him. Great coach and a great man. Much deserved.

Just heard this on espn and Clayton brought up a possible Flynn angle. This tells me maybe the Pack can get something decent in return.

Good for him, and given what's just happened, perhaps a fresh start somewhere new isn't such a bad thing. I hope he does well. I'd like to see MM's coaching tree start to look like Holmy's at some point.

Congrats. He deserves it. And if he really believes Flynn is the man, I expect they'll tender up a second for him. They'd give up more to trade up with the Rams, I'm sure.

Oakland Raiders wish to speak with Mike Tice for head coaching position

Tice was recently promoted to the role of offensive coordinator for the Chicago Bears with the retirement of Mike Martz. Martz’s contract with the Bears was up at the conclusion of this season and Chicago had made no move to offer Martz a new deal. Mike Martz announced his retirement from football earlier this week.

I hope MM switches his AHC tag from Moss to Clements, although that would certainly upset Moss. Perhaps a promotion to OC would work also.

Did Mike McCoy play for the Packers?

There are multiple Mike McCoys in NFL history. The one who is a current coach did not play for the Packers, although he was on the practice squad.

Have to admit I'm fairly apprehensive about MM's ability to fill the position. It's not just the OC but the involvement Philbin had with the O line that worries me. I don't trust Campen to run that by himself.

Strange that the Dolphins want to still retain Bowles as defensive co-ordinator. Not too often that you end up working on the same team for the guy who beat you out to be head coach, and for the team that thought you weren't qualified to be the head coach.

Is Edgar Bennett ready to be an OC? I don't see Clements being it. Past history shows that GB QB coaches often get head coach considerations without having to go the coordinator route.

Dolphins making a mistake IMO, How could Philbin possibly have himself together to take on this responsibility?

Whatever I guess, more power to philbin and the Dolphins, I just think its a mistake.

I don't know that Bennett is ready yet, but he's on that track. I think that's why MM has moved him around from RBs to receivers, etc. MM probably sees something in Bennett that he likes and wants to maximize his coaching talent.

As for keeping Bowles, Miami has a pretty good defense so I can see his value as DC. But I agree it would be weird to keep him around after rejecting him as head coach. You'd have to wonder if Bowles would be resentful of Philbin beating him out and then working for him, making him a less-than-ideal staff member. Players seemed to like Bowles as well, so that could also make for some friction.

As for Philbin, it's a tough position because he may want to bring in his own guy, and management is telling the team that Philbin doesn't have total control of who he hires. If I were Philbin, I'd be wondering about the wisdom of stepping into a situation where a coordinator was forced on him.

Just got off phone with ex-#Packers coach Mike Sherman, Philbin's high-school English teacher who brought him to Tulane as a grad assistant.

Sherman on if he thought Philbin would be @NFL coach in high school: "At that time, I didn’t think either one of us would be."

Sherman on Dolphins/Philbin: "They got a great man, there’s no question about that. And a great coach."

Sherman on Philbin: "He’s extremely, extremely intelligent. I can say this having had him as student as a coach: He’s a very smart guy."

I stopped listening to anything Clayton says when he insisted that Bates was the favorite for the GB job a few hours before McCarthy got it. He's a joke.

I still think the best we get is a sign and trade, where we send Flynn and our 1st round to Miami for their first round. (According to the draft numerical trade value, the Dolphins pick at #9 would be valued at 1350, and our pick at #28 is 660--so throwing in Flynn is equivalent to also trading to the Dolphins the #26 pick in the draft)

Allows us to move up into the top 10 where we can land an impact pass rusher, and Dolphins benefit by keeping a 1st round draft pick and getting Flynn.

That appears to be the same value chart that said TT overpaid for Matthews and I think you could probably squeeze another draft pick out of the deal.

Did it ever cross your mind that Philbin asked Bowles to stayon as DC? Maybe Bowles likes the Miami area and didn't want to move.

I sincerely doubt that prior to getting the job if Philbin had a discussion with Bowles, his competitor for the job, about Bowles staying on. In fact, the media reports indicate that Philbin said he was not opposed to the idea of Bowles staying on, indicating that it wasn't Philbin's idea or request, but rather something he thought could work out if that was what the Dolphins wanted.

Good news for Philbin. I wish him well...

Even better news for GB. This could be significant with the future of Flynn and getting some compensation for him.

As for the OC opening, I'd assume it would be Clements. However, I think MM plays a large role of the "OC" anyhow.

I just don't understand the talk about trading for Flynn. If he's a free agent, why would someone want to make a trade? What am I missing? Can IC or someone please 'splain this to me?

It can eliminate a bidding war for a players' services... GB and Miami can come to terms on compensation and while Flynn and Miami agree to a deal. It basically takes the player off the market so there isn't a bidding war in FA.

Obviously, the player has to be a willing participant but I don't see any reason why Flynn wouldn't want to be in Miami with his former OC, etc. I think it's a win for everybody.

Again, this is exactly what happened with Cassel, even down to a former Patriot being the man in Kansas City (Pioli). I see no reason why this wouldn't happen in Miami with Flynn and Philbin. Is it wishful thinking? Of course. But there is recent evidence that this will work. Maybe not a first, but a second and a decent player is reasonable (which is what happened with Cassel). Trading this for a starting QB that your head coach has worked with for 4 years is a decent deal.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but Miami's front 7 is pretty solid, specifically d-line. I wonder if there is a backup or a veteran that the Packers could get in addition to a second round pick. Again, this is very wishful thinking but it is based in reality.

But then the question becomes does Flynn have much more potential than Matt Moore? Both are somewhat limited athletically (arm strength) but are good leader types. I'm not a big Moore guy but that's something Philbin and Co. will be looking at.

Trade our first and Flynn to Miami for their 1st rounder (9th overall) then flip that pick to move down a few spots and take Courtney Upshaw, Melvin Ingram, or Nick Perry and pick up an additional 3rd rounder....
