I really want to get Abernathy on the PS. But since we signed Ford, doesn’t that mean 1 person will have to be cut and possibly signed to the PS? Please enlighten me, Mr. Wizard.

Abernathy made the initial  53 and was the player cut to make room for Ford.  Nobody else has to be cut.  Seeing how he was on the initial 53, I'm sure if he wants a spot on the practice squad,  he will get it.   He just has to clear waivers.  Which I believe he already has.

There's room currently for one more player, which has been reported is going to be Abernathy.  If Ahmed is to be on the PS (and Gute has said he wants to keep him) they will need to cut a player.  Which wouldn't be a surprise from Gute as he likes the churn the bottom of the roster.

My guess is he'll wait until he sees what he has from the new PS players he got, get rid of whoever is the worst, then sign Ahmed.

I don’t see why you need the kicker on the PS unless you intend to protect him every week.   He’s going to vulnerable and I don’t view it as a situation where you want him there to foster growth like a young skilled player.

If another team wants him on the 53 he will get signed regardless of his PS status with the GBP.   You keep his number and if Crosby isn’t healthy, you sign him.

Very good point. If Crosby suffers an injury we can still sign him to our PS or to the 53.

unless he's already with another team...dude has options and sitting by the phone hoping for the Packers to call is only 1 of them.

One benefit of having an extra kicker -  you can rest old man Crosby and still let Bisaccia work on kickoffs/coverage during the week.  And while its a very small possibility, COVID still exists and getting an emergency kicker in town quickly is why they kept one on PS previously. If they view him as just another leg, then yeah, no need.

If they have longer term plans for him, they can justify stashing Ahmed on PS

Yeah, but sitting at home doesn't get him paid, and being on the PS does prevent him from joining other teams.

"One benefit of having an extra kicker -  you can rest old man Crosby and still let Bisaccia work on kickoffs/coverage during the week." - Never thought of that. ABSOLUTELY!

So, is there room on the PS for Ahmed? We ought to keep Ahmed around until we know what's up with Crosby, but I don't think there is an open spot for him. Nail biting time for Ahmed.

No worries.  They probably have Ahmed stashed away on the SDS - Speed Dial Squad.  This is where the Packers pay guys to remain loyal to them without actually showing up as a player anywhere.  Who knows how many there are - probably only Gute knows for sure.  On the balance sheet it shows up as "Other Expenses" - a miscellaneous category the NFL won't question.

The Green Bay Packers are expected to sign kicker Ramiz Ahmed to their practice squad on Sunday. Once official, the 16-man unit will be filled.

Ahmed went undrafted in 2019, got a shot with the Bears in 2020, then opened eyes with his long kick in the USFL.

β€œLike many specialists, the next step often takes a few years and some growing and some maturity,” Carney told Packer Central recently. β€œHe has put a lot of time and effort and education into his kicking and into his craft. He is an NFL kicker. It’s just a matter of what team and when it’s going to happen. He has dialed in his game and dialed in his mental process. He showed that in the USFL. I’m excited for him. He’s got a future in the NFL. I think his future is bright.”

Crosby’s 58-yard field goal in 2011 is the longest in franchise history. Ahmed’s 61-yarder off a bad hold would have been good from 64. How far could he make one?

β€œIf I’m on sticks, the farthest kick I’ve ever hit was 73,” he said. β€œI used to train that a lot more and chase the big balls but it’s not necessarily something that I do anymore. It’s not something that keeps you in the NFL. Maybe it gets your some looks but, once you’re in the door, you’ve got to make kicks.
That’s what I’m focused on right now.”

So if a team has a kicker go down on Sunday or Monday, nothing stops them from poaching the kicker on Tuesday.

That makes them keeping the kicker on the PS a little alarming pertaining to Crosby's health.    It could be they want him there to so that Mason doesn't have to kick as much throughout the week.

It's literally the last PS squad spot so, whatever, but it does make me nervous about Crosby.
