I know this will be an unpopular post and probably does NOT make much sense.  But everyone, including me, thinks that Coleman will be really poor as a backup QB.  However, there is a bit of precedence here.  I remember when the "Majik Man", Majkowsi(sp) went down injured and the Packers had to bring a little known and certainly not respected QB by the name of Brett Favre.   He seems to have worked out OK for the Packers.   But who amongst the posters on this board really thought that he would be any good at all?   I am sure most of us "old timers" that were around way back then were horrified that the Packer season was doomed.   Perhaps, just perhaps, Coleman could surprise us all when he gets a chance to play and is in with the first string players.    I hope we do not have to find out since AR is such a good QB.   But, perhaps.

Robin-I'm not sure what your point of reference is. Majik was pulling wins out of his butt ('89) 2 years before Favre made it to the show. Wolff saw the trade for him as better than what was available at that position.

I made a suggestion on the old Journal/Sentinel board in 1998 that Favre was the best trade bait in history. I got a new orifice from the other posters for that proposal  but I would not propose the same trade with Rodgers.  The Packers could get another franchise' # 1 for 5 years and still not get the performance they get from their current QB.

I think it was pretty well established that Favre was the future when Wolf made that trade. Sure, Majik had that great year in 1989, but he was coming off shoulder surgery and had no ties to the Wolf/Holmgren regime. He was simply a stop gap until Favre was ready to play...and if Favre didn't pan out, they were going to find someone else.

Here's the write-up from the jsonline archives:

http://www.jsonline.com/sports/packers/39404057.html

There simply is no comparison to Favre backing up Majik that year to Coleman backing up Rodgers this year. In fact, it's the exact opposite situation. Favre was a potential franchise QB backing up a regular guy on a team with no expectations. Coleman is a regular guy backing up a franchise QB on a Super Bowl contender.

Favre also had major maturity concerns but few were doubting his arm or ability to move an offense. Agree had it not been for that and the car wreck, he likely would have went in the 1st.

No one not hitting the pipe is claiming in any way shape or form Coleman should have or would have been even a 4th round pick. And no there is comparing Majik/Favre to Rodgers/Coleman.

Hell you couldn't even compare that to Rodgers/Flynn either.

As much of a fan I am of TT in many, many ways in the way he runs this team not even I (and I'm guessing many of you) was buying the shiiit TT was shoveling on Coleman today. I just hope Teds not done finding a back up QB for Rodgers. Because I don't wanna find out what happens if he is.

"We really didn't want to keep Coleman since he's a worthless piece of ****.q, but the other two guys he was competing against in training camp are even bigger disasters."

To be fair, I don't think it would be a particularly good idea for TT so say anything like that.  We'll have to make do with the talk about always looking to improve, looking at every option, and so on and so on.

Harrell was maxed out with no upside.  VY was a cannon ball with ability to hopefully help prepare our defense for a couple early opponents.  Coleman may or may not have a rats chance of being a player.  That is what MM and Clement get paid for.

Is there a better qb short term in the event A-Rod goes down available?  Likely.  Is he worth a roster spot today?  Quite frankly,

Yeah.. when Wolf traded a first rounder for Favre...you pretty much knew he was the future..Majik handled it a little better than Favre would when his time came...

Flynn, may never be a great-- but was able to lead a college team to a national championship, and looked respectable in the pre-season...Coleman couldn't break the starting line-up at Tennessee..It's early...but so far, he looks terrible...I can't believe he will be with the packers past Oct. 1

Not buying the Favre comparison either. I know he did some off-season training with Favre, but the connection ends there.  Thompson thought either Harrell or Young were going to pay off, but by the time it became evident they were bad investments, it was too late. I don't think he's done and I'm pretty sure he's scouring the rosters and cast-offs for something better. Coleman could be just another bad investment, but TT is not in a position to clean the closet completely. Coleman is young, plucky, and came with the physical tools and some very raw potential. So TT will give him another year and wring every ounce of potential out of him before he dumps him. He's a good fit for the practice squad. I think Tolzien is just a practice squad placeholder while TT continues to shop. He also can provide some insight on the 49'ers offense.  I would watch for the Packers to add a more legitimate number 2 and move Coleman to the ps next week.

It does matter in many instances. If AR were to go down long term, probably not. But if he were to go out during a game, or if he were to miss a game or two, there's no reason to think a decent backup couldn't win.

I'm amazed so many posters (not necessarily you) think the season would be over if AR were lost for any extended period of time.  The Packers have a very good roster: great receiving corp, hopefully an improved running game and a good defense that should be better this year than last.  I'm not diminishing AR's value to the team - he's arguably the NFL's best player.  But he also has a load of talent around him.

A decent backup might be the difference between winning and losing a game or two.  And one victory can often be the difference between making the playoffs or sitting at home.  Or in the case of last season - hosting the Niners versus playing in San Francisco.

Packers waived QB B.J. Coleman.

Coleman went 14-of-34 (41.2 percent) for 128 yards with one touchdown and one interception in the preseason. He was still expected to serve as Aaron Rodgers' backup following the release of Vince Young. Now the Packers only have newly acquired practice-squad quarterback Scott Tolzien behind Rodgers. GM Ted Thompson has sometime up his sleeve.

Huh. I thought I read somewhere he was retiring. Good signing if true.

Edit: Here's what I had seen...

Seneca Wallace is retiring from football.
It was apparently Wallace's call not to suit up in Thursday's preseason finale. "He felt strongly about it," coach Jim Harbaugh said. "I don't talk people out of that. I've never seen it done on game day, but I wish him well." A 2003 fourth-rounder, Wallace hangs it up with a career 81.3 QB rating, 59.2 completion percentage and 31:18 TD:INT ratio through 764 passes. Wallace hasn't played since 2011. Aug 30 - 8:34 AM

I don't think you and I disagree about AR.  I agree that he's the one that pulls the talent together..at least on the offensive side of the ball.  A perfect example (even though it was preseason) were the 'hawks and Chefs games.  No AR, no defensive respect for the passing game, and therefore, nowhere for Lacy, et. al. to run.

I agree playing at home against the Browns is not the same as playing at NYG.  But losses at either don't count differently in the standings.  And there are plenty of instances over the years in the NFL where a backup has come in and beaten good teams.

Funny reading some of the responses to the tweet.....we have the first one the brilliant guy who saw all this coming. Then the 2nd one...full panic mode. We need a BACKUP! wTF are you doing ROTTT

Good thing we do not have anyone at X4 that posts like this.

Maybe....

“I’ve been around this game long enough where I can see what’s going on,” Wallace told the Des Moines Register, “and I realized right away the reason they brought me here was to get Colt to take a pay cut."

Wallace, who left the 49ers amid reports that he was retiring, said that in reality he just didn’t think San Francisco was the right place for him.

“I have not retired,” Wallace said. “I have just removed myself from the San Francisco situation because it wasn’t a perfect fit for me.”
