Jordy Nelson wants $10M per season
By Rob Demovsky | ESPN.com
GREEN BAY, Wis. -- The Packers and veteran receiver Jordy Nelson no doubt took notice of the contract extension Atlanta Falcons receiver Roddy White signed on Thursday.
Like Nelson, White was entering the final year of his contract and was seeking a long-term extension.
Although the specific breakdown of the contract was not yet available, ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter reported that it is worth up to $30 million over four seasons and included $18 million in guaranteed money.
Nelson is seeking all of that -- and more. A source familiar with the negotiations said Nelson wants a deal worth at least $10 million per season. That would be a major increase from his current contract, which averages $4.2 million per season and ranks 34th among all NFL receivers. White was due to make $5 million this season.
Nelson's 2014 pay is scheduled to be $3.5 million as part of the three-year, $12.6 million contract extension he signed on Sept. 29, 2011. That contract turned out to be a bargain for the Packers, but Nelson ended up leaving money on the table.
"When I signed it, I don't think I did," Nelson said earlier this offseason. "I think everyone, when I signed, thought it was a good deal. No one would have known I'd have 1,200 yards and 15 touchdowns [in 2011]. Obviously, hindsight is 20/20 but, again, I'm not worried about that at all. I've been comfortable with my decision."
Still, there are differences between White and Nelson that could factor into the ongoing negotiations.
For six straight seasons (from 2007-12), White eclipsed the 1,000-yard receiving mark. That streak ended last season in part because he missed three games because of injuries.
Nelson does not have that kind of prolonged success but over the last three seasons, he has comparable numbers. Since 2011, Nelson has 202 catches for 3,322 yards and 30 touchdowns. Over that same period, White has 255 catches for 3,358 yards and 18 touchdowns.
However, they are at different points in their careers. Nelson just turned 29 less than two months ago, while White will turn 33 in November. Complicating matters for the Packers is the fact that their other top receiver, Randall Cobb, also is entering the final year of his contract. Indications are the Packers would like re-sign both.
The Packers have $13,669,119 in salary cap space, according to the latest figures from ESPN Stats & Information.

Per usual, it's not about the contract amount/per year. It's always about what the TRUE guaranteed amount is.
(assuming it's true) If they were willing to give Jennings 9 mil a year....
I wonder what happened to:
"What I got in that last deal, I'll never spend it all anyway," Nelson said last week. "So I'm not worried about it."
Is it just me or has Demovsky been wrong more than right since moving to ESPN? Maybe I'm way off, but it just seems that way.
I thought that was a prerequisite to work there...?!
I want him back!!! He's been great both on and off the field. He's worth it! Enough said!
I trust TT and Russ Ball will work out the best deal possible. TT and MM aren't going to let a gem like 87 go.
Jordy is worth dropping big coin. So underrated by most outside of Packer land. Everything you want in a player both on and off the field.
Demovsky is stirring schit for the World Leader in schit-stirring and yes, he's also full of schit lately. Its part of his job description, truth is secondary to clicks and views
When Jordy speaks, then you'll have an idea of what Jordy thinks.
Pay him!!

Agent.
Bad Bob is probably the Grand Wizard/Poobah of the to get clicks, so indeed who knows whether Rob D has this right or not. It's possible he's throwing this out there as a pure guess but I do see ESPN is running with this story on NFL Insiders just now.
If Jordy agreed to a 4 year deal, he would be 33 at his next go round at a contract. Unless he's ungodly productive/healthy or he's willing to do a bargain contract it's possible in today's NFL this is last one. Or at least his last BIG contract. So I can't blame him for getting as much as he can.
.
Demovsky is pretty well-connected and I have no reason to doubt his reporting. Much of that is just posturing and the organization will take the same approach they did with Jennings. I don't see Jordy making the same mistake Greg did in overvaluing his worth and leaving all sorts of money on the table.
So Jordy's agent just set the high mark for the negotiations on a per-year basis. Great. Never seen this before.
He'll wind up getting about $8-9M/year, and that seems about right.
Know when to hold, and know when to fold.
No wonder Jordy can only afford measly soft serve in Wausau. He didn't even bother to go down the road to Belts.
waiting for SDPF to tell me if JJSD is being sarcastic....
I'm sure Demovsky is well connected with Jordy's agent. What this means is that the negotiations have commenced in earnest and Jordy's agent is playing games. The Packers may or may not play the game themselves by way of some reporter "talking to his source". The media doesn't break big stories anymore, the media is a tool used as a means to an end. Nothing more. Nothing gets out anymore that isn't strategically planned, especially to ESPN. A source familiar with the negotiations...that means it's either Jordy, his wife, his agent, Ted, or Russ Ball. I doubt it's Jordy or his wife and Ted hates the media anyway so its either Russ or the agent...either way it's just a game.
It hurts my feelings that you don't even have to ask anymore if I'm being rude.
I'd bet Boykin and Adams get plenty of reps this season.
If they look good(or if AR makes them look good), along with Cobb on the roster, TT has the upper hand.
Contingency plan in part was drafting Adams, Abby and Janis. Tough to keep both Jordy and Cobb so keep the draft and develop pipeline full.
I'll believe that when I hear it from Jordy's mouth. I'm sure Uncle Ted and Jordy will get something worked out, and let the agent know what the final number is.
What's hard to believe?
That's not Mike Holmgren.
Contingency might be Abby. Although not as dynamic as Cobb, Abby could play the Wes Welker role quite well. If he proves that in TC, that allows TT to resign Jordy so a veteran presence stays in place for the young guys. TT might be able to keep both depending on salary cap next year, and which players he's looking at cutting.
I know you can only afford to pay so many people... but I would be shocked if both Jordy and Cobb aren't with GB going into the future. Both are dynamic football players that do things right on and off the field... in their prime.
Move $herrrod to WR......he can do it all
There was a reason Patty Cake Raji was only offered a 1 year contract. $$$$ will be available for Jordy and Randall.
ROTTT
i wonder if Tim Dwight could help
This reeks of ESPN creating a storyline. If White is getting his deal they figure there's no way Nelson can sign for less and take a swing.
Well then, if Jordy goes I will have no more teeth.
I'd bet Boykin and Adams get plenty of reps this season.

How the heck can one compare two/one fricken seasons from Boykin and Adams, respectively, to Jordy's body of work? I disagree.

F'n A Right! A beer to you sir!
The history under TT is players being compensated very fairly. In fact, if you look at Hawk, Brad Jones and Burnett there's a very good case that they're often too well compensated. Jordy has made it clear he wants to remain in GB and all indications are the organization wants him here. There's no reason to believe that a deal won't be hammered out without much difficulty.
What he wants won't be what he gets. Maybe the Packers can throw in some cattle for the farm though those are at a premium these days.
You don't compare their bodies of work.
You compare their probable future production per dollar they will cost you.
TT can sign Boykin, Adams, Abby and probably 3 other WR to go along with Cobb for less than $10M per year total.
I don't agree with overpaying 30 year old WRs. Not when AR is your QB.
Like I said, it will depend on what Boykin and Adams look like this season.
So Jordy's agent just set the high mark for the negotiations on a per-year basis. Great. Never seen this before.
He'll wind up getting about $8-9M/year, and that seems about right.
He's going to get more than $8 million.
He'll get $30 million over the first three years, and the rest will be window dressing.
As the clear cut #1 option at WR with Adrian Peterson Greg Jennings only put up 800 yards and 4 TDs last year. Very pedestrian. Aaron Rodgers makes good WRs better.
Like Greg and James Jones. Jordy has had success in GB. A ring. Playoff exposure. Great numbers. Now he wants to be paid. Cant fault him for that.
Ted has a number. Probably in the $8 million per neighborhood. If Jordy thinks he's accomplished what he wanted in GB (he has) and thinks he can get more elsewhere (he can) then he'll move on.
Contract negotiations with WRs in GB with AR. Wash, rinse, repeat.

Great post. Don't pay the guy for what he has done. Pay him for what he will do.

Exactly. If you remember, Jennings was offered a really good contract, but he decided to squeeze a few more thousands to play with Ponder.
BMarsh signed a 3-year extension for $30M with $23M guaranteed. Marshall is a little older, and a little lady punchier, but he's also put up slightly better numbers.
I consider Marshall to be a pretty close comp to Jordy as a player as that next level just below "elite," so $10M a year isn't unreasonable. Especially at the rate contracts are going up.
I will say most WR'S can play at a high level until 34-35 provided they keep themselves in great shape.
I see a minimum of 3-4 more excellent years from Jordy.
Free Safety will defeat you with his superior business acumen.
You cannot compare WRs who play with AR to WRs who play with other QBs. Maybe Brees or Peyton, but that is it.
If Cutler or Ponder is your QB you have to overpay to attract quality WRs.
WRs are worth less in GB because AR can get it done with somebody else.
JMO IMO
IMHO JMO if he stays healthy and has the year he could have, Cobb will wind up costing more than Jordy. Cobb is the guy who could see north of $10M/year.

They'll sign Jordy to an extension this year with it front loaded and Cobb with his back loaded. Work with the rising cap.
Ball > Brandt
You don't overpay 30+ year old wide receivers or 28+ year old running backs. You pay elite players at the QB, LT, and CB positions along with guys that can rush the passer.
I love Jordy, but something like 4 years/40 million is too much. 3/25 is probably closer, but if he gets to free agency someone will pay him bigger bucks and he'll end up like Greg Jennings, Marco Rivera, Scott Wells, etc. as guys who produce well in Green Bay and then get overpayed by others.
So underrated...
agree. Cobb I think has 2 big contracts coming before he retires. I am confident the brass will get it done right.
So underrated...
AR?
I agree.
Roddy White is going to make $18 Million over the next two seasons as part of his extension.
At age 33.
Jordy is going to get $10 million a year. He's got at least 3-5 productive years left. Even when his speed drops off, he'll be able to get open because of his size and route running ability.
Howz that extension gonna look when they convert him to a TE in 3 years
Damn, I think in order to have an elite WR we need to get rid of AR.
Per @AdamSchefter, Nelson's signing bonus is $11.5 million, which is included in that $14+ million guarantee. 2014 base was $3.05 million.

Only fitting that a guy who catches everything catches a well-deserved 39M contract. Congrats @JordyRNelson

Not surprised Jordy Nelson got big $$. He and Aaron Rodgers are best QB-WR duo in NFL http://t.co/pM55LYd5k7 pic.twitter.com/gXQIpaxSci

Here's a piece I did on how Packers use Jordy Nelson in the slot. He's also one of the league's best deep receivers http://t.co/CIVZbSUoNV
â SI_DougFarrar (@SI_DougFarrar) July 26, 2014
Didn't get 10 million a year. Pwned by TT.
Contract seems about right for Jordy. He's everything you want in a WR; tall, strong, fast, good hands, great route runner, and not a diva. He played most of last without Rodgers or a legit #2 WR and had a career year. He's the definition of a guy who deserves to get paid.
This may impact their ability to sign Cobb though. Slot WRs make less than WRs who play outside. If Cobb thinks he's getting $10m a year like Jordy, he's going to be disappointed. I'd expect Cobb to get more like $6-7m a year (and only if he plays a full 16 games).
29 years old. 4 years / $39mm is a great deal for both sides. Ball knows what he is doing.
Here's the thing I love about ROTTT. When he sees a problem or deficiency, he attacks it via multiple angles. He doesn't sign a FA, he drafts and develops the position. I think the ROTTT/Ball duo are going to having a fantastic run in Green Bay.
Meanwhile in Queensland...
!!!!!! YEAH!!!!! ...and I get to keep my teeth!
@ Icheese Nice!
Guess Jordy's buying lunch.
Nice deal for both sides. Very under rated wide out. #whitepeopleproblems
I hope Jennings doesn't own a dog.
29 years old. 4 years / $39mm is a great deal for both sides. Ball knows what he is doing.
$9.75 Million average. I was rong.
Well deserved and again a great job by TT and Russ Ball.
From the Neil Greenberg article linked to above. Worth highlighting.
Since 2011, Aaron Rodgers has thrown to Jordy Nelson 224 times and has completed 158 of those passes (70.5 percent). They have produced 2,683 yards, 26 touchdowns, three interceptions for a passer rating of 143.9. Plus, they have needed eight yards on average for the first down and have moved the chains 51.3 percent of the time.
From today..
No surprise, Aaron Rodgers airmails a 40-plus yard touchdown to Jordy Nelson over Dennard in no huddle. Been hooking up all morning deep.
From today..
Been hooking up all morning deep.
We still talking about football?
Man it sucks being a Packer. You know....doing all the right things on & off the field.
The Packers never reward anybody for good play. This sucks
@ Icheese Nice!
Don't encourage him.
Sharpening stones, walking on coals
To improve your business acumen
Coupled with his $3.50 million compensation for 2014, heâs now under contract for five years, $42.5 million. Thatâs an average of $8.5 million per year.
Dam ewe ROTTT!

He could've gotten a really nice golf cart with that extra $Million.
I think he can afford to expand his farm now, to probably half the state of Kansas.
Smart man. No chance of racking himself on that bike.
Prior to Nelson extension, Packers were spending $9.35M at WR position, 4th-lowest amount in NFL in â14. $11.5M signing bonus changes that
If 4-yrs & $39M is all ânewâ money, Nelson has 5-yr, $42.5M deal. $8.5M APY same as Pierre Garcon, less than Victor Cruz ($8.6M)
Here's hoping he can finally buy a bull to breed cows.
And he stays humble. Still drives a bike with a basket.
Does this mean that Demovsky wass right? Great job by the Packers and Jordy getting it worked out, with #'s on both sides that are fair and work out.
Awesome!
Talk about landing in a decent spot. And that's how you stack success.
Whoo hoo, great for Jordy and great for the Packers.
Interested to see now what they do with Cobb
I read the same quote from Cobb... That's outstanding character and a guy you WANT to give money to.
Translation: "I want 10 million/ yr too but I don't have the track record or stats to back it up yet.
Gimme a year"
Randall will have to make the same decision all of Rodgers' WR's have to make:
Be (1) part of an awesome crew or try to be The Man someplace else
#brainwash
No doubt, who wouldn't want that kind of money? I can't recall the last time I've heard a player say that though.
Sounds to me like he won't be signing an extension any time soon.
Cobb will have an incredible year with the help of A-Rod. Rodgers seems to know who needs the numbers and they all appreciate that. TOG may have hung with his guys. A-Rod makes sure they get paid.
Cap #'s: $5.925M in 2014, then $4.6M, $8.8M, $11.55M, $12.55M.
