Notes: Two-way lineman who also played basketball as a Mississippi prep. Saw action as a reserve in 11 games as a true freshman in 2007. Started 10-of-11 games played at left tackle in ’08 β€” did not play in the season opener or start in Week Two while dealing with a foot infection. Started all 25 games at left tackle in 2009-10. Team captain.

Positives: Well built with wide shoulders, long arms, huge hands and good overall body length. Plays square to the line of scrimmage and has good lateral agility to shuffle, slide and mirror. Good recovery speed in pass pro. Sound technician in the run game β€” understands angles and leverage, runs his feet on contact and works to maintain positioning and sustain. Can clear his feet through traffic and plays with good balance β€” is not on the ground a lot. Tough, competitive and plays through injuries. Outstanding work ethic and preparation. Is smart, assignment-sound and trustworthy. The game is very important to him.

Negatives: Lacks functional lower-body strength. Does not roll off the ball flat-backed with power or generate movement in the run game. Not strong or powerful at the point of attack and relies on finesse. Lacks confidence and plays too soft-tempered with little emotion on the field. Almost plays too nice and does not seek to finish. Passive playing temperament turned off evaluators at the Senior Bowl.

Summary: A polarizing evaluation for many NFL teams, Sherrod does not fit ideally at any one position on the line. He lacks elite athletic ability for the left side and ideal power for the right, but has a nice blend of both qualities and enough to function at left tackle in the pros. Could even wind up kicking inside to guard, where some teams have graded him, and versatility is a plus. Has clear starter talent, does not get challenged much and should take over at the OLT position readily, warranting first-round attention.

NFL projection: Top-50 pick.

Strengths:
Coveted height and size
Able to play left tackle
Skilled pass blocker
Protects edge rushers well
Can mirror defenders in space
Gets to second level and blocks downfield
Intelligent and very high character
Tons of experience against top competition

Weaknesses:
Must get stronger and add bulk
Tends to lunge
Balance issues
Run blocking needs work
Mild demeanor; has to finish blocks

Summary: Derek Sherrod might need to get a pep talk similar to what Sandra Bullock (playing Leigh Anne Tuohy) gave Michael Oher in The Blind Side. He has the size and athletic ability to play left tackle in the NFL, but could be too timid to deal with some of the more aggressive pass rushers. Almost everything else checks out, and in a generally weak draft class, he is one of the top tackles expected to be able to man the left side.

Grade:

quote:
32. Derek Sherrod, OT, Mississippi State
This pick surprises me because Derek Sherrod doesn't fit the appearance the Packers usually look for in their offensive linemen. But Derek Sherrod is a great selection. He should have gone somewhere in the 20s. Ted Thompson just improved Aaron Rodgers' pass protection, which is definitely a good move. (Pick Grade: A)
McGinn wrote this about Sherrod yesterday:

"Thompson has high regard for Mississippi State's Derek Sherrod, the last of four left tackles on most boards, and might go up and take him if he slips into the early 20s. The cost to move up 10 slots in the first round would be a third-round choice."

So TT got a guy that McGinn thought TT would have to spend a 3rd round pick to move up and get.
Clearly a reach and need pick by TT- FAIL!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Seriously.

Plenty of picks to move up if we need, happy fun time no matter what this draft.

DAMN it feels good to just 'reload'.

My sentiments exactly.
I was thinking too many OL gone, TT will go DT/DE ~ Wrong!
To hear he was targeting the guy and he fell to TT ~ Sweet!
I figured that OL & WR would be the focus early in the draft.

So I am happy with the pick. I know that he doesn't exactly fit TT's OL profile - at least so far. He definitly needs more strength. His playing weight will be closer to 315 once they get more muscle on his frame. I saw him play in person - and focused on him for 3 games last year. The raw material is there - but he needs coaching.

If they did not take him, they should have taken Torrey Smith IMO. That would provide WR insurance and add some badly needed return capability.
From Wes Bunting, NFP:

Derek Sherrod, OT, Mississippi State

6-6, 305 pounds

Sherrod is a great value at the end of round one and has the ability to be the Packers starting left tackle of the future. He's a good athlete who displays impressive change of direction skills and balance in pass protection and can create leverage in the run game as well. A bright kid who will be able to learn the playbook quickly and in my mind is a better prospect than both Nate Solder and Anthony Castonzo.

bright kid is right. during his phone call presser he mentioned that if he wasn't playing football he'd be staying in school to earn his masters.
