People wrote off Adams as well, he was supposedly not going to make it out of training camp. Jaire was referred to as Ahmad Carroll. Rodgers was called injury prone. Jordy had problems with drops. Not saying Stern is in the same camp as these guys, but yeah players develop and improve. Things can click with some guys and they finally realize their potential.

People also pounded the table that fans needed to trust the front office and be patient with Datone Jones and a host of other recent round 1-3 draft pick busts as well.

Datone was supposedly always on the cusp of a breakout season until not even the guy who wasted a first round pick on him could keep him on roster any longer and Jones took his JAG talents to 5 or 6 other teams where he did next to nothing.

People also claimed Quentin Rollins just needed time to develop, after all he played just one year of football at Miami of Ohio, Montravious Adams just needed more seasoning for all of his talent to shine through, and Josh Jackson just need(s) or needed a scheme change.

Hell, there were some who insisted on continued patience with Jason Spriggs despite their eyes almost immediately telling them he was a bust simply because Ted Thompson traded up in round 2 to select him.

Not saying Stern is already another high round bust, but always showing patience even after players have demonstrated they are not good only because those players were drafted in rounds 1-3 is, and has been, foolish.

And Sternberger should absolutely be on notice that he either starts to produce on the field immediately or his roster spot goes to a more deserving player -- despite the fact Gutey took him in round 3 of the 2019 draft.

I’m not criticizing fans for criticism mixing Stern, I just wouldn’t write him off. He was drafted in R3 because he showed skill and potential. Players get 4 year contracts for a reason, sometimes it takes 4 years to figure it out. Datone and Spriggs should have and were appropriately given time to develop. The biggest sin isn’t poor drafting or being too patient, it’s relying heavily on your developing players to be your key guys. If we could have treated Datone like Gary is being treated, he might have improved.

Nope.

The biggest sin is a combination of poor drafting while relying on those poor draft picks almost exclusively -- even when they prove they cannot do the job, and ignoring other avenues of acquiring talent such as free agency.

There is no better example of that "sin" than the Pack's Defensive roster between 2011-2018 (pre-Gutey), which featured so, so many high picks who were given all the time in the world to demonstrate that they were indeed "poor" picks.

And no amount of coddling was going to ever make Datone Jones into anything other than the over-drafted JAG he was ... in Green Bay, Detroit, Minnesota, San Francisco, Dallas, Jacksonville, or Las Vegas (his NFL stops).

That said, I'm sure once Datone starts tearing it up for the Montreal Alouettes if and when the CFL ever resumes playing, some delusional Front Office fans will continue to claim that if Green Bay had only been more patient with Jones he would have surely proven to be worthy of his first-round selection.

I'm starting to think the problem might be us.

In order IMO:

Tonyan,

Degura

Lewis (he may be 2nd in terms of playing time, but that's for blocking purposes)

Dafney

Sternberger

I get he's a 3rd round pick, and no, you don't want to dismiss that too soon but honestly I just don't see playing time for him beyond ST's. And you don't draft a 3rd rounder with the intention of playing ST's only. As for Dafney, I think the Packers are pretty high on him. And he's shown some good things already.

I certainly hope the best for Jace, but honestly, is this team really keeping 5 TE's??

Suspension aside, you have to give players time to develop. Hell, many people had Gary written off almost immediately and he’s going to be an all pro one say if he keeps his health.

Finley looked like a wasted pick a couple years in too. Not that I expect Turdburger to make a Finley jump but you never know. I was hoping the 2 game suspension was for PED's. At least that would have given me the indication he was really trying to get stronger.

could be. This is now a MLF roster and he loves those TE's.
Chongo noted you can put Deguara in the RB/FB room if it makes ya feel better on the numbers side.

Packers played a lot of 2 TE sets; approx 50% of the time they had 2 TE's on the field - that's a huge philosophical shift and adds flexibility. WRs always go out for a pass, TE's do not. That causes confusion & hesitation for the defense and that's critical for an MLF offense. Shifts, motions, jets - and then confusion about who is doing what on each snap.

I can't say I totally understand why, but for some reason - when young players miss time early in their careers, they really struggle to make it up. Jace was new to the position and then lost precious development time to ankle injury and then concussions. Still hope for Sternberger to break out and if he shows it in TC, no problem keeping 5 TE's on the 53.

Jace will get his opportunity, but all things being equal I'm not sure the organization wouldn't go with Dafney ahead of him (Sternberger is a third rounder so all things aren't equal).

And that's the fault in the thinking.  We keep hearing you put the best 53 on the roster.  Sternberger being a dumb ass after being hurt doesn't exclude him from not being worthy of a roster spot.  If Dafney shows more, has more upside as a big hoss blocker when Lewis moves on he should get the spot.

Time is running out for Jace.

Had a nice catch while wide open but the first time I noticed him Saturday he was getting knocked on his ass. That's been a trend for him.

β€œJace has done a really nice job,” LaFleur said Friday. β€œHe’s come in, and he’s a little bit heavier than he’s been in the past, but it seems like he’s been able to keep his speed up. He made some really good plays yesterday. Some really nice catches in the one-on-one period.”

The Packers list Sternberger at 6-4 and 251 pounds.

β€œIt’s going into Year 3 for Jace, so it’s a big year for him,” LaFleur said. There’s a lot expected out of him in terms of his ability to go out there and perform on a consistent basis. That’s what we’re really looking for from him. And he’s done a nice job.”

Ooof that’s a brutal list. Not surprised either that he’s cut. But I did wonder with him being a 3rd rounder if he’d stick around longer.

Thankfully Bobby T really looks like the real deal and could be a top 10 TE in the NFL. If Deguara can ever get and stay healthy, it seems like the Packers are high on him. So makes sense to move on from Sternbuger

Packers waiving Jace Sternberger

Not really a surprise.

Meaning coach speak is horseshit or coaches and FO can't evaluate for shit.

As a side note. There is no reason Clay Matthews III shouldn’t be on this roster.

The front 7 on D as currently constructed is not good. Clay is 35 but f**k I’ve seen enough of this trash front. Take Clark or Z. Smith away this is Midvale School for the gifted

That’s a really good secondary. Be a shame to waste it.

Put him at ILB.
