Love guys like this...low, powerful, quick first step, and hard for a big tall lummox to get his hands on.

Barring injury you usually don't go wrong drafting guys that play hard and want to be there.
This team is now loaded with LBs and DL. A little competition isn't the worst thing for those positions.

Wondering if this guy is similar to Colin Cole who was referred to as a fireplug and was also on the short side.
I think Daniels is twice the athlete of Colin Cole.

I really wanted Klug last year. Daniels plays bigger than his size. Could definitely make the team.
Klug was just "a guy". I was hoping the Packers would take Mitch King a few years ago but, hell, he didn't make it in the league either. The Badgers OL didn't block him for 4 years and I thought for sure he'd make it at the next level. Instead . . .
Clayborn went in R1 and put up 8 sacks last year
Klug went in the 5th and put up 7 sacks for Tennessee
Ballard - probably the most physical tallant of them all went in R2 to Minnie and didn't do much of anything.
Binns and Daniels were all the Iowa DL had last year. Binns played well in a couple games but it was all Daniels and every team game planned for him.
Love me some ROTTT because I didn't think he would even get a look due to his size.
Klug is going to have the career I thought Mitch King would....

Daniels Should Make Quick Impact
by Michael Rodney on April 28th, 2012
quote:Watch Mike Daniels play against Oklahoma in last December’s Insight Bowl and you’ll immediately know why GM Ted Thompson spent a fourth-round pick on a defensive lineman who will probably never see more than 30 snaps in a game.
The former Iowa star won’t be a starter because he’s too short (6’0) to play end in a 3-4 and too light (290) to play nose tackle. What he will be, however, is a disruptive pass rusher.

Audio:quote:Defensive Coordinator Dom Capers said he liked Iowa’s track record for producing players in the trenches, and the Packers noticed Daniels last year as three of his defensive linemates were being scouted and ultimately drafted...
“We think he’s an all-football guy,” Capers said. “The thing that jumps out at me is the way he plays the game. He plays the game with quickness, intensity. I think he’ll bring a sense of energy with him.”
Capers envisions Daniels as a potential inside rusher in his nickel package, when only two down linemen are on the field. The Packers play nickel predominantly due to other teams’ three- and four-receiver sets, and both Daniels and Worthy will hopefully provide some punch to the inside rush.
“Both of these defensive linemen we’ve added have excellent in-line quickness, and that’s what you have to have in this day and age in order to beat the one-on-one block,” Capers said.
“We have enough flexibility that we’ll adjust what we’re doing to try to get our best football players on the field.”
Daniels, who was a second-team All-Big Ten pick last year, finished his college career with a flourish. He recorded two sacks and three tackles for loss in Iowa’s Insight Bowl loss to Oklahoma.
He played in that bowl game with an injured shoulder, which he hurt about two weeks prior to the game. Daniels called it a “wear-and-tear” injury and he had postseason surgery on it. He said he was medically cleared two weeks ago.
At the scouting combine, Daniels had one official sit-down interview – with the Packers. He sensed the Packers were impressed and he’s grateful to be given a chance to overcome the knock against his height, the same chance Iowa gave him coming out of New Jersey.continue

Capers also talked about how Detroit is much the same situation as the Saints. Assuming they expect a lot of teams to try to play catch up this year it makes sense to have as many guys as possible that are explosive close to the line. They should have a good rotation on that spot opposite Raji and they can keep attacking.quote:To keep them inside, it means Capers may have to play a lot of nickel defense where a defensive lineman is taken off the field and an extra defensive back is added. The two defensive linemen line up inside and are often given the green light to pursue the quarterback.
"We opened with the New Orleans Saints out here (last year)," Capers said. "We did not play one snap of our base defense because of the style of play they play. They're always looking for matchups.
"The game has changed." continue
Randle was 6'1" and 287 : #93 also. Similar size.
And before some of the literal types get excited, not saying we have another John Randle with Daniels, just that there are similarities.
We now have at least four guys now who should be able to get some heat inside (at least situationally) and that's without what if anything we get from Mike Neal.
Night and day depth wise up front from last year, IMO.
No way Raji should have to play nearly as many snaps this year either.

Does he play all three downs? Nope, but how many guys on this D do? All the DL rotates and everyone but Raji is situational. That this guy looks like a situational player is just fine with me. Some games he might hardly see the field and the next he might play a lot. Speed is the theme of this draft, as well as a high motor. Another tool in the box for Dom.
Sounds like he takes plays off to me. Turd.
no need for the quote here
Thanks H5 for the great links. JSO said 1/3 of the sacks came from just a 4 man rush. We have snotbubblers in the DL, boys and girls. Only disappointment so far is rook Datone Jones, I guess. And most DL rooks need a year of seasoning.
.
Daniels is succeeding inside like they originally hoped that Mike Neal would...
Arrow is pointing up for Mr. Daniels and he's a great compliment to the Big Boys
Daniels even thanked Raji/Pickett/Jolly for "tenderizing" the vikes OL for him
Best line ever.
"I got two (sacks); that's cute," Daniels said.
Actually, usually 2 or 3 years. He has been improving. I will take that.
Good call, he's turned into a beast for the Packers.
Dude brings some real juice to the defense too and with Jolly likely a goner, GB needs it
He's no Big Ern.
Daniels doesn't have the prototypical size and all the cool measurables... but he plays his ass off and works hard. Kind of reminds me of a poor man's John Randle.
Hank: Your boy Ern can play... let's hope the young kids can too.
Randle was my guilty pleasure. Too bad he played for the Queens.
I'm loving Hyde lining up next to Burrnett with Clinto-Dix in the wings. Last two years Morgan looked around and knew he had an easy path to week 1. I don't think he's losing his spot but if he doesn't put in the work...Mike has his name stamped on improvement. A couple false steps and he's on the bench.
This looks like it could be a scary defense that's sick of reading bad press.
Those words have never been strung together in that order before.
Credit where it's due.
Not a great reflection on Raji that a 3rd year 4th round pick is becoming the leader of the DL but eff it. Maybe Daniels saw a need and worked his ass off to fill it. Love him being in GB. Young kids better follow that lead.
Even a blind squirrel finds a nut every now and then...
