I'm in a contract until next June, so I have almost no leverage. I'm waiting until week 9 because I only have one Packers game that I won't be getting without NFL Sunday Ticket in that span (the Chargers game in week 6). I plan on checking out a local sports bar for that one. A couple beers and a basket of fries isn't going to kill my wallet. I love RedZone, but I'm not going to give DirecTV $360 just so I can have it for all 17 Sundays. Unless DirecTV gives me one hell of a deal next season, I'm just going back to contract-free cable TV with their version of the RedZone. I can cancel cable the minute the regular season ends, and going to a sports bar for the 4-5 Packers games I won't get is still a lot cheaper than paying DirecTV a fortune for NFL Sunday Ticket and a bundle of crappy TV channels airing garbage I never watch. Even their "premium" channels are terrible.

With DirecTV, you have to give them their stupid receivers back when you cancel their service. And when you want them back for football down the road? WHAM! New two year contract! They're one of the worst companies in the country. If not for their monopoly on NFL Sunday Ticket, they'd go bankrupt in a fortnight.

DirecTV sucks man, I got sick and tired of giving them money about 10 years ago.  Always waiting for NFL contract with directv to expire so they could work out a less monopolistic deal and then being pissed off when they strike the same agreement.

F them.

Since then I've found a bunch of different ways to get NFL games without paying a dime extra.  All these games and red zone are streamed on the internet.  It doesn't take much preparation to make the experience painless as you only need to install an ad blocker to make all of the advertisements and Trojans disappear.  Every season the streams get more reliable and more clear.  Is it perfect?  no, far from it.  Is it free, absolutely.  Is it better than spending a bunch of money for what equates to about 40 hours of football watching a year?  oh yeah it is much better.

This season the nfl ticket is offering their product to people who can't get directv but it's still pretty expensive.  Also they have a better deal for college students and my son is a student at U of M so he is eligible to get this sweet deal.

https://nflst.directv.com/u

$99 for the whole package, that is an awesome deal and since he won't use it I am free to get it for myself.  I almost did get it, but then I looked at the schedule and figured that I would only need the package for like 6 - 8 games so I declined cause  I can still watch the games and redzone for FREE, and it feels really good to do it and not give any of my cash to DTV.

So for another season I'll be streaming the games and watching them on my tv without having to leave my house, without worrying about blackouts, without having to spend a penny more.  I see these same discussions every season and I'm always wondering why???  Watching Packer games for free feels great, I smile every time.  It leaves me more money to waste on Packer merchandising and actually go to a game if I choose to

If ANYONE on this forum ever needs any help getting a game on their computer, just let me know, I am very happy to help.  It's been about 10 years now and I have never missed a game.

Just my 2 cents..

AT&T bought DirecTV because their monopoly on NFL Sunday Ticket lasts until 2023, and they have no reason to think that they won't be able to extend that monopoly once it's time to make a new deal with the NFL. Hell will freeze over before Congress steps in and puts an end to this kind of consumer-gouging crap. It's a garbage company that depends on a monopoly of an extremely popular product. Take it away, and they'd never be able to compete with their present business model and price structures. Their entire corporate strategy revolves around being able to gouge home subscribers and bars on NFL Sunday Ticket. They would be forced to completely re-organize and compete along the lines of Dish Network without it. Not an easy undertaking.

If by some miracle AT&T should fail to renew its monopoly agreement with the NFL in 2023, I wouldn't be the least bit surprised if they just begin the process of closing up shop (or greatly downscaling it to limit its focus to rural subscribers, since their U-Verse service is already available in large parts of the country) on the DirecTV brand/service and selling off its assets, rather than try to re-organize it and make it profitable again. AT&T is big enough to be able to take a short-term bath on something like that instead of taking long-term risk on re-organization. Barring a successful (yet risky) re-organization, DirecTV would be a worthless, money-losing asset without the NFL Sunday Ticket monopoly.

Right on Boris, I use Kodi as well and love it.  I don't watch any sports on it though because if something hiccups it takes longer to recover or to find an alternative feed.  On the plus side is it removes all of the malware and advertisements automatically so no need for ad block sw.

Do you use the 1channel addon?  that alone is reason to cut cable, Netflix, satellite etc.

And the best part is NO COMMERCIALS.  After going without commercials for a few months you realize just how much brainwashing they're doing to us.

We got Sunday ticket for the first time ever this year. Wife got it for me and Rusty. The Rusted One doesn't have TV service but he can go on the DTV app and stream it all on his I-pad or Roku on to his TV. Going to a sports bar to watch games in upstate NY would be useless. 25 tv's with the Giants,Jets or Bills on. If the Packers game was on a screen  you wouldn't be able to hear a thing with all the drunks screaming every time they showed a sideline shot of Sexy Rexy. Might be a good thing if Ache-Man and Buck are doing the game.

I've been preaching the "no commercials" thing for quite a while. TV used to be "FREE" (It still is) You have to fight with the providers to lower the price but they need the subscribers to charge the ad rates. Simple economics.

I have an nVidia Shield console. 1 bad ass game console / TV device. Tegra X1 processor. Yes 4K streaming capable. AC Wireless adapter.

I also have D*^ & Sunday Ticket, however, I negotiate my price.

I'm considering killing sat altogether. Just not this year

Cool man, that NVidia device looks awesome!  A buddy of mine loves his.  Are you able to run Kodi on that?

Cutting the cord is a little weird at first,  I was surprised that sometimes I actually missed commercials.   Then I figured out something about my viewing habits.

Sometimes I want to watch a show, and sometimes I want to watch TV.  So I got an antennae for when I want to have the TV on in the background or live news, but when I want to watch a show I use other (commercial-less) means.  It works well for me.

You won't regret it Boris, it's very freeing.

EDIT -  I also use hdhomerun for my OTA channels, if you're not familiar, it works quite well with Kodi.

Used another credit card to sign up for a second free preview of NFL Game Pass today. The picture is sharp enough from a resolution standpoint, but the frame rate is pretty jerky (has nothing to do with my connection, it's lightning fast). It's free, and it's better than being at a sports bar today for the game. You just have to cancel your subscription within a week, before they bill you. If anyone else is interested, sign up for unotelly.com's DNS service ($5/mo, already turned off auto-renew) to make the NFL's servers think you're in Brazil. Without that, you can't get live games.

Thanks for that. I'll check it out & my apologies for not catching this post 2 weeks ago

no problem Boris.  The hdhomerun is the best OTA pc tuner I've ever used and I've used a bunch of them.  The fact that it's a network device makes it so flexible, love it and can't recommend it enough it can stream to just about anything.

I'm using a kodi plugin called phoenix for video streaming today that has a PERFECT HD nfl network feed.  Sadly the game links don't seem to be working, but that NFL network feed is beautiful.

Gamepass stream randomly logged off and stopped working for about 20 minutes or so. It was taking me to the American page when I tried to log back in. It's back on now, even though I didn't change any settings. Wonder what that was about.

In northern California the local game (Baltimore / San Francisco) was broadcast which means that game is blacked out in the 700's. No big deal as it's on the local channel.

What happened yesterday is completely unacceptable as the Packer / Charger game was blacked out deep into the 4th quarter. "They" finally figured it out & lit up the channel near the end of the game.

Who wants to join me in a class action lawsuit vs. The NFL & their TV stations?

I bitched 4 people out at DTV yesterday for a solid 60 minutes while I wasn't watching a game that I paid to see. I told the last guy he really needed to throw a pot of coffee on and mix it with Red Bull becasue Twitter was blowing up on the west coast over the Packer game. That poor bastard had a long day. Bars were full of Packer fans spitting venom being stuck with the 49ers - Ravens.

I ended up with:

Comped DTV bill for November.

$50.00 off every monthly bill for the next year.

Free HBO for a year.

Free Sunday Ticket for 2016.

As I understand it. This was an NFL eff up, not DTV. The NFL got all sideways on broadcasting the afternoon games. DTV had nothing to do with it.

I'm going to assume DTV will go after the NFL to try and recover all the free **** they had to give away yesterday to keep customers.

Sunday was a whole different animal. Green Bay was playing and I wasn't watching something I paid for. So I tore through 3 people to get to the closer. That person got the typhoon when she said, "if it makes you feel better, Green Bay just went up 14-3"

Normally I call DTV with a game plan and calmly work my way to the closer. Never tear into someone that didn't cause the problem or can't authorize a fix.

I called DirecTV to get a discount on the remainder of the season for NFL Sunday Ticket Max. They started out stonewalling me, not willing to give me an inch. All I was asking for was for them to knock it down to $160 (currently listed at $200 on the website). I told them that I was planning on canceling my service in June (when my contract expires) unless they could give me a deal. The conversation ended that way. About 15 minutes later, I got a call back from another representative offering me all the premium channels and ST Max for $6/mo for three months. Unless I get Sunday Ticket Max for free (or a small fraction of its normal price) next season, I still will be canceling my service. Feels good to finally win against these people

Had NFL Sunday Ticket free last season after switching to Direct TV.   I may cancel it this season unless I get a decent discount when threatening to cancel.   What kind of a discount are the rest of you receiving for this season if you told them you wanted to cancel service?  Thanks
