I get it.  But....I do think TT wants to go out after another championship.   I think that is why he's still the GM now.  He wants to go out on top.   Now, I do hope that he's aware IF one of his assistants is very good, he would step aside.

Fire Dom or force his retirement. IMO Ted and Mike deserve another run.

If Mike refuses to fire Dom then he has to go as well. It would be a shame if it came to that but facts are stupid things.

There have been rumblings, but now Rapport is reporting the possibility of Thompson stepping into a new role at the end of this season.  There was a post on NFL.com and the GBPG picked it up.

Ian Rapport also as an interesting note at the end of this Sunday post for Around the NFL regarding the future of Packers general manager Ted Thompson:

From Rapoport:

If you're looking for a surprise, the Packers could be it. While the coaching staff may tinker after the season, including possibly OC Edgar Bennett likely getting head coach interviews, it is expected to have minimal changes. The front office, however, is a different story. GM Ted Thompson is under contract through 2018, but this could be the year he steps aside and becomes a senior scouting adviser. If Green Bay has success in the playoffs, that possibility increases. There are a few reasons why: First of all, Director of Football Operations Eliot Wolf is coveted and he'll have opportunities to interview as a GM elsewhere. The organization could risk losing him if he's not promoted. Second of all, CEO Mark Murphy still hasn't hired his own guy, and he's been around the organization much more this year as he studies things from the inside. There are plenty of talented people in the Packers front office -- VP Russ Ball, Director of Player Personnel Brian Gutekunst and Senior Personnel Executive Alonzo Highsmith among them. And this could be the year Thompson steps aside to make way for them.

Guessing this is accurate

Interesting that it happened year to the date of the reports.

As with Dom, better late than never.

Wonder how much McCarthy and or Aaron had to do with this development.

Certainly both (and possibly a few directors) had to be beyond frustrated by how exposed Ted's roster was in Aaron's absence.

Either he has really gone downhill fast, or there was a lot of covering up his last couple of years.  Sad to see, though.

"Gutekunst also has Thompson at his side, at least for now. The former GM who was pushed aside 14 months ago now serves as a senior adviser, although he recently moved back to his home in Texas. A source said he’s not expected to travel much to Green Bay anymore because of his declining health and the need to have someone travel with him."

Several reports of the same rumor keeps resurfacing. Several years ago TT went on “vacation”. Which wasn’t a vacation. He underwent a medical procedure and he came out of surgery with a major medical complication. Some say it was a stroke.

Regardless, his mental capacity was never the same. The front office knew it but didn’t make the needed change at the time. Only when his health further and further declined they finally made the move.

Anyway,I  wish Ted well. Lord knows he’s worked plenty hard to deserve retirement.

Best of luck to TT. His health must have really deteriorated if he now requires someone to travel with him. Story is just another indication of how Mark Murphy was asleep at the switch and failed to make the necessary moves in a timely manner.

His life was, and is again, in Atlanta, TX.

Somehow "Atlanta, Texas" doesn't sound right.

And I also wish TT all the best and thank him for his time, effort, and success in GB.

Getting back to our new GM, I like this quote from the article:

“We’re going to win, and when we win guys are going to get opportunities,” Gutekunst said. “And I wanted to make sure I had enough guys in our pipeline that we can keep moving forward.”

Taking care of the future while expecting things to happen now.  I like it.

There is no question that TT was great in his prime.  I join others in wishing him well with whatever ailment(s) he has.

That aside, I also can't help but wonder how long he has been suffering and why he was allowed to continue in his role as the GM when it was obvious he was in serious decline.

I would guess at least a couple of years.  Between dumbshit McVince running the ****ing team into the ground and TT struggling it leaves a lot of questions like what was the deal with The Exodus and Dwight Schrute.

TT made his decisions off of his own extensive scouting.  If he's not traveling or having overall issues with his health in that time is he leaning on Dwight more than Wolf and Highsmith?  Those guys made a lateral move to the Browns for **** sakes.  I get Goofyfruits landing the job was part of it but those guys seemed like they couldn't get out fast enough.  Plus, with Murphy holding the reins on everything all of sudden when he was completely ****ing oblivious before sure makes you hope he made the right hiring decisions.

I think this offseason will really be the measure of the new FO.

That sucks to hear. 10 years of playing in the league probably didn't help either.

We all wish Ted the best.

146 games as a undersize LB/special teams guy. You have to wonder how many concussions he had in his career. He's very, very likely to have some form of CTE.

The fact that Murphy still has a job really pisses me off.

Just from the few glimpses of TT in the press box during his final years, it was obvious to anyone with even a small amount of medical training that he wasn't healthy. McGinn's reporting (quoted below from Profootballtalk.com) was probably spot on. The fact that the Board of Directors had to order Murphy to move on from TT really reflects poorly on Murphy. A lot of the local beat guys (think Jason Wilde) had to know something was up but probably didn't want to lose access. This camera shot on air in the press we all remember was 12 seconds long (and his expression never changed and it was likely this look for quite a while before and after the 12 seconds).

It's a football team. It's not life and death, but if you were the CEO of a large corporation and your Chief Operating Officer or other key staff member was partially incapacitated and you did nothing for months if not years, the Board of Directors would fire you for not taking care of this problem. It wasn't helping anyone (especially TT) to have him unable to do the job like he needed to. The fact that less than 15 months after TT was no longer GM he can't even travel alone anymore (while apparently retaining the physical ability to walk) is startling. Unless he's had a major health event since retiring, this means he clearly didn't have the capacity to be the GM for an NFL team and it cost the Packers organization the chance to be more competitive for several year.

The whole situation is not TT's fault, it's not MM's fault, it's not the fault of Gute, Ball, E. Wolf, etc. (unless they covered up for TT to Murphy). It's more and more apparent that this situation was Murphy's fault. Period. He was too busy with building sledding hills and restaurants and hanging out with billionaires at the NFL owners meetings. He should have been doing his main job, which was the make sure the Packers org chart was clear and staff were capable of functioning in their positions.

Bob Harlan removed John Jones from replacing him because he knew he was no longer capable of doing the job after a health scare. It had to be hard for Harlan to do that to a guy who had paid his dues for almost a decade, but that's what was best for the organization (and for John Jones for that matter). Murphy let this situation get out of hand and when he did move on set up a org chart with mixed messages about the line of authority.

The Board should be looking for Murphy's replacement right now.

Now that the story is out, the story behind the story is emerging.

Veteran Packers reporter Bob McGinn, who left the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel last year and started his own online publication, reports that the removal of Ted Thompson from the G.M. position in Green Bay happened at the behest of the team. Specifically, the 45-member Board of Directors instructed CEO Mark Murphy to remove Thompson from the job.

McGinn points to “public images” of Thompson and “some recent interaction” with team executives as the impetus for the move, listing various factors that contributed to the conclusion that Thompson’s health prevents him from continuing in the job.

McGinn’s article delves into specifics that, indeed, would make Thompson unfit to continue in such a demanding job. It’s unclear what the issue is, but the concern generally relates to his ability to properly focus.

So, in reality, Bob Harlan's last hire, being TT, propelled the rebuild of the team and a Super Bowl championship until his health declined.  He picks Rodgers, he brings in Woodson, he builds a young corp of players that propel the Packers to multiple winning seasons and playoff appearances.  No speaking to hiring McVince the flunky but even that clown couldn't **** up the team TT built.

The more information that comes out about Murphy the less optimistic I am about this team's immediate future.  I hope GooRadley and Mayo LaFrog were the right choices but I withhold judgement considering the absolute horrible track record of Murphy and how he's pulling all the strings right now.

The news about the freakin' board pushing Murphy to dismiss TT is just too much.  That guy should've been shown the door months ago.
