Looking at the top interior DL that would fit our scheme...

Louis Nix III - 6'3, 340lbs - Notre Dame - Doubt he'll be available at #21 and TT isn't mortgaging the draft to get him.

Da'quan Jones - 6'3, 339lbs - Penn State - He will be available at #21 but he has problems with "not going hard every play" which means he's probably 2nd round talent.

Dan McCullers - 6'6", 350lbs - Tennessee - Massive dude...maybe too tall and inflexible.

Shamar Stephen - 6'4", 323lbs - UConn - Might be a tad on the light side, but could get to 330lbs with right program.

Beau Allen - 6'3", 330lbs - Wisconsin - Would definitely be a fan favorite...have not seen him play enough to pass judgement.

It's kinda funny.  I figured Starks was gone for sure, not for lack of talent, but for missing assignments and all those snippets found on internet about being in the coach's doghouse.  This year he really impressed me with his one cut, decisive running and significant burst.  Now that I have warmed up to him, I fully expect he signs elsewhere.

Agree -  I think he will get a contract as a starter somewhere.   We can't afford that when we have Harris and Franklin as well.

He has always looked great IMO when the line gave him something, it's just the inability to stay on the field.  I think the limited role is the best for Mr. Starks but someone will pay him to try and win a starting job.

Sorry, didn't see there was already a draft thread. Started new thread with this:

Looking at top picks in draft, at 21 we don't get a great linebacker, maybe a fairly decent Dl but not a game changer. Is it time for the big, big move?

Would you make this trade?... for the one true playmaker in the draft, as much as we can predict these things.

Would you trade our 1st (21), our 2nd (53)... and here's the hurt... Jordy Nelson... to go up to 4 and draft Jadeveone Clowney? The draft chart says it's fair if Jordy given a late 1st round grade. Clowney may actually fall that far.

Jordy is my favorite player. Don't want him to leave... ever. But for a young Julius Peppers to team with Clay Mathews... would you consider? I think the one overwhelming move that makes Packer D dangerous is another potentially great pass rusher to go with Mathews and Mike Daniels. I know TT doesn't like free agents, but he has traded up in the draft to get the player he wants.

Having proposed this I  admit... I wouldn't make the trade. Like Jordy too much... but I'd seriously consider. If they came back and said Cobb instead of Jordy, on the clock... what does Ted do?

Great post overall Doc and I wanted to comment about TT.

He lost Dorsey, Schneider and McKenzie from his inner circle and they are all out there drafting against him too. That's a lot of institutional knowledge that the Packers lost over the last couple seasons. Here's hoping Ted rises to the occasion

Ted remembers the lame-ass post you wrote about him & his methods last summer and he farts in your general direction. And Ted even traded down so he could send more farts in your direction rather than risking it all on one huge fart that may or may not blossom.

That's the difference between smart fellers and fart smellers

 No, too many holes.

This is dum logic. Draft is a crap shoot.

TT's history with high draft picks are AJ Hawk at #5, Raji at #9 and Justin ****ing Harrell at #16.

AR, CMIII came from the mid to low 20s, Nelson from the high 30s etc...

Trading up only ensures you have less chances to find somebody who might turn into a good football player.

Here some facts about Ted Thompson's draft history that show some tendencies:

  • He doesn't favor any schools in particular. Of the 86 players he has picked, 4 of them came from Iowa which is the most of any other school. Colorado, Texas A&M, UCLA, and Louisville came in second all with 3 players picked. All that tells me is that he doesn't favor any schools, he looks everywhere.
  • He doesn't really favor any conferences specifically. He's picked 13 players from the SEC which is the most. The FCS is second with 12 players, Mountain West is third with 11 players, the Pac-12 and ACC both have had 11 picks, and the B1G and the Big 12 have had 9. His favorite positions for each conference are: RB and DL from SEC, OL from FCS, OL from Mountain West, OLB from the Pac-12, DL & Safeties from the ACC, DL & Safeties from the B1G, DL from the Big 12, OL from the Big East (now AAC) and any position from the MAC, C-USA, or the WAC. This tells me he likes certain qualities about each conference and picks by what unique quality each conference offers (size from the SEC, athletes from the Pac-12, etc.).
  • His favorite position to draft is OL, he's picked 17, followed by Defensive Linemen (including DT, DE, 3-4 DE, and 3-4 NT) with 15 and WR's with 11. He's picked 8 RB/FB, 7 OLB (4-3 and 3-4), 7 CB, 5 QB, 5 TE, 5 ILB, 5 Safeties, and only 1 Kicker.
  • He favors DL and OLB in round 1 with 3 picks each (out of 9), WR's in round 2 with 4 (out of 13), Safeties in round 3 with 2 (out of 7), OL in round 4 with 5 (out of 14), OL in round 5 with 5 (out of 14), DL in round 6 with 3 (out of 13), and DL and WRs in round 7 with 3 each (out of 16).

Interpret these facts however you want. They may mean nothing or they may indicate some kind of preference for who he drafts, where they come from, and where he picks them.

There are so many holes the draft alone likely doesn't cut it.

I'd like to see Borland and Beau Allen in Green & Gold next year because I think they could contribute and be taken after the third round. Borland's size likely costs him a couple of rounds.

The Packers need at least two DL. Raji, Pickett and Jolly may well all be gone, with Jolly most likely one back for a year. An Allen/Boyd rotation would be a third-day value at NT, Daniels is a nice situational player but not a full-timer, Jones needs to continue to develop but who knows with Worthy and even if he can play they still need another solid rotational guy up front. And that's a lot of roster spots to have a decent D-Line rotation.

They need at least two LBs, preferably three. Matthews isn't the most durable fellow, Hawk is severely limited, Jones is small, Neal is a FA and though likely cheap isn't durable either, Perry doesn't seem to fit very well and Mulumba's just a guy.

In the defensive backfield they need a starting-caliber safety and likely another starting-caliber outside corner. Tramon will be back, someone will pay Shields in a man scheme, most likely, Heyward is an inside guy, Hyde is also, and House would fine fine in the dime but they'll need another outside starter.

On offense they need a starting-caliber TE, a fullback and a develomental WR at least. Any talented O-lineman would not go amiss either.

Here's a list of the last 14 picks at #21 slot:

2013 - Tyler Eifert, TE, Notre Dame - Cincinnati
2012 - Chandler Jones, DE, Syracuse - New England
2011 - Philip Taylor, DT, Baylor - Cleveland
2010 - Jermaine Gresham, TE, Oklahoma - Cincinnati
2009 - Alex Mack, C, Cal - Cleveland
2008 - Sam Baker, OT, USC - Atlanta
2007 - Reggie Nelson, FS, Florida - Jacksonville
2006 - Laurence Maroney, RB, Minnesota - New England
2005 - Matt Jones, WR, Arkansas - Jacksonville
2004 - Steven Jackson, RB, Oregon State - St. Louis
2003 - Jeff Faine, C, Notre Dame - Cleveland
2002 - Daniel Graham, TE, Colorado - New England
2001 - Nate Clements, CB, Ohio State - Buffalo
2000 - Sylvester Morris, WR, Jackson State - Kansas City

We're talking a lot about players and not much about all of their coaches?

Will be interesting to see what MM's staff looks like by the middle of February.  Sounds like some of his men may be getting more interest than just rumors printed in newspapers.

I'd like to see MM turn over his play-calling duties to someone else who may be more imaginative and daring.

2. Khalil Mack OLB Buffalo (TT's small-school second rounder)

3. Darqueze Dennard  CB Michigan State (physical corner with some speed questions)

4. CJ Fiederowicz/Marcel Jensen TE Iowa/Fresno State (big target in middle)

5. Beau Allen  NT Wisconsin

6. Chris Borland  ILB Wisconsin (Undersized tackling machine)

7 Isiah Lewis S Michigan State (TT doesn't mind shorter safeties and Lewis is just a good football player)
