I think that's a pretty accurate assessment, Pistol GB, especially now that our receivers are all able to play. It makes Rodgers all the more dangerous.
To be honest, I'm glad that Kaepernick is starting in place of Smith, even though his running abilities could create some big gains. Smith isn't a big play maker at quarterback, but he makes few mistakes. I think we might get a few more interception opportunities with Kaepernick under center. I know the numbers don't bear it out (CK actually has a lower int % than Smith this season), but I've watched the Niners a few times since Kaepernick has been starting, and he's gotten away with a few really bad throws that should have been picked. Against our secondary, he might not be so fortunate.
I see it being a close game. This is Aaron Rodgers' one chance to play at the 'stick in a playoff game, and I expect he'll make the most of it.
Gonna need Walden to have another big game. Clay needs that help on the other side. Raji also needs to continue doing what he has been doing for the last month. Not sure what's gotten into him but he's been much better down the stretch. Getting more and more penetration and providing a rush up the middle. Big man has found his 2nd gear
I don't want to see replacement refs. It is my belief that the Packers WRs were mauled during the first 3 games of the season. Physical corners were allowed to check WRs 10+ yards past the line of scrimmage because the replacement refs allowed it. I don't want to see refs that fail to administer the rules of the game.
They don't care about those games anymore. In their minds, the win at Lambeau has completely exorcised the 49ers' demons with the Packers, and that's the end of the story. Of course, that was also the story after that Wildcard debacle, hoping that the Packers can prove the last loss was just another aberration.quote:Originally posted by lambeausouth:
I find it humorous that the Whiner fans are talking crap about the Packers, about how this is going to be an easy game. San Francisco has been our bitch since the salary cap went into effect in 1994.
Since the beginning of the 1995 season, Green Bay is 13-2 against San Francisco (including playoffs), and one of those wins should have been a Packer win, as Jerry Rice clearly fumbled, and Green Bay recovered. We'd have taken a knee, and moved on to the divisional playoff round.
Here's a yearly breakdown I put together. When some Niner fan runs their yap, point them to this:
2012

He scored a touchdown at Lambeau, unfortunately. Aside from a Packer loss, that was the one thing I didn't want to see in that game. I'll be at the game on Saturday, and I'm really hoping to see him take one or two to the chin as the Packers roll to a big victory.quote:Originally posted by RoyalWulff:
What about Randy Moss? Has he done anything this year? Will he moon any Packer fans? ;-)
I don't want to see Erik Walden or Frank Zombo covering Vernon Davis or any WR's. Nick Perry was in coverage about a dozen times the last time we played them and he was awful, they even matched him up on Manningham one play. As long as Dom knocks that crap off I think Burnett and Woodson can stick on Davis and Walker pretty well.
I would like to see Woodson eyeing Keaperdick with Hayward in the slot. Hopefully House is healthy to give us some depth.
I'd also like to see Capers dial up some creative zone blitzes on short passing downs. But when we have then 3rd and long, i think they should rush 4 and sit in coverage. Let Neal and Matthews get something going and keep Keaperdick contained.

Looked back at the opener... Bush started at CB and played A LOT. Shields and Hayward hardly played at all.
Yeah this is a MUCH different team than the last one the 49ers faced. We're getting better production out of the running game, the pass rush is improved with Walden (who was suspended) and Neal, the young CBs have found some confidence, Raji is playing some of the best football of his career, Woodson's role will be much different with the young CBs in there, etc.
On the flip side, the 49ers are much different. They have a different QB who offers a different skill set. They're lacking a couple of their weapons (namely Manningham) and their DLine has taken a hit with Smith banged up.
I don't think we can look at the week 1 match and use it as a comparison. Both teams have evolved (if you believe in such things).

My perception of the first game was that the Packers didn't respond well to the physicality of the 49ers. I don't want to see a soft team out there on Saturday night.
Both teams were intelligently designed.
While I do worry about big plays by their QB, I maintain our QB and offense is capable of just as many big plays.
Packer offense is pretty much healthy.
SCORE SOME POINTS!!!
If you score more points than they do, you win.
6+ three and outs probably isn't going to cut it in SF.

Going back and about the week 1 game some interesting things. Benson only had 18 yards on 9 carries. Harris will do better than that. No other Packer other than Rodgers on scrambles had a rushing attempt. That will not happen again.
Packers had 10 penalties in this game. Was some of these due to replacement goofs not understanding NFL play and some of it being 1st game of the season. MM has the guys playing much better now with limited penalties.
Packers were good on 3rd down, both D and O. San Fran was only 2-9 while the Packers were 6-13. The bigger problem was the 49ers got too many 1st down on 1st or 2nd down.
In the Packer 8 drives thru the middle of the 4th quater they had 6 punts, an INT and a TD. They will play better than this.

Things I want to see....
Packer takeaways & Winner of this game wins the Super Bowl
Things I don't want to see....
Packer turnovers & Packer O-Line giving up 10 sacks or more

We are not going to 'slug" it our with them...gotta hit some big plays and win the turn over battle to negate their advantage in the physical part of the game.

Notice the same thing. No Hawyard and no McMillian.
Like in the 97 year with Wayne Simmons owning Brent Jones at the LOS...Do the same thing with Davis....Get physical with him, own him, take him out of the equation OR make life tough on him....

Exactly right. I think this is where GB failed the first time. At least with the running game, they tried to man up and try to out muscle the 49ers with Benson, and it didn't work. If the Packers do what they do best, execute like they're capable of, they will win.
without Justin Smith I think the run game can be adequate - run right at Aldon Smith. with Justin, screens and dump-offs.
Aaron. Rodgers.
I don't know what it is, but I have a feeling Rodgers is gonna have an amazing game. Similar to Atlanta in the Divisional. Win or lose, I bet Rodgers has the game of his life.

Justin Smith will play. He wont' be anywhere near 100% though, not that quickly from a partial triceps tear. We will see how effective he still is with only one arm
I realize I'm in the minority with this game, but I think the Packers are going to win it going away. Rodgers will be playing his first game in the stadium where he always dreamed of playing, in front of all his family and friends, against the team that dissed him on draft day, with the sour taste of the Packers' week-one loss still in his mouth, with all of his WRs healthy.
I just don't see any way Rodgers has anything short of an amazing performance. I fully expect him to play to the level he did two years ago in the divisional round against Atlanta.
And with the Packers defense playing so much better than they were week one, I just don't believe the 49ers will be able to keep up.
Usually the worrying football pessimist inside me won't allow for this sort of optimism. After all, I was raised cheering for a team that lost more than it won year after yer after year. But not this week. This week I'm just feeling it. Rodgers is going to be at his best.

Found the % snaps played in the 1st game, and since:
In Week 1 vs. 9ers, Bush played 64% of the snaps on defense, since he's played an average of 4% of snaps/game.
Conversely, Hayward played 5% of d snaps in week 1, has averaged 66% of d snaps/game since.
Phillip Merling also played a lot that game. 29 snaps. And he played poorly. Hopefully Mike Neal can make a difference.
It was also AJ Hawks worst game of the year. Worse than Week 17. We'll need a solid game from him.

As long as they don't ask Hawk to cover Vernon Davis, we should be just fine
If we play to the best of our abilities, we should win comfortably. It's a tough matchup, but we're the better team. We don't need any luck, and we don't need the 9ers to play poorly. We are in complete control of how this game turns out. I feel good about this weekend.
At JSO, Silverstein is on the right track.
The Vikings game was the perfect warm-up for this one. Packers need to treat Frank Gore like he's Adrian Peterson.

Nice theory. Who's going to do that?

Or any LBer covering a WR. Niners LB corps is insane, but I'm not scared of their DB's. Cobb had a field day in Week 1 vs them. I look for him to have another big game
Wayne Simmons was traded to Kansas City in '97. You're thinking of the '95 playoffs. At any rate, Walden is going to have a tough time shutting down a guy like Vernon Davis. He's quite a bit better than Brent Jones.quote:Originally posted by R MaN:

Dezman Moses could probably punch Vernon around all day but I don't think we can afford to isolate one guy on him.
Hope like hell they have support for any LB tasked with covering Vernon - allowing one on one with our LBs is a highway to hell. maybe, MAYBE, Brad Jones could sorta keep up.

Not certain I agree with you there. Maybe by the time Davis' career is over, but Jones was a hell of a player. Great hands, great blocker, good route runner. One of the best TEs during his time in the NFL. Davis definitely is more physically gifted, but Jones was a stud!

I do not want to see AJ Hawk/Woodson on Davis
Ever since Kaep became the QB, he has barely been throwing it to Vernon Davis. That's fine with me if that continues again this weekend

Wow you weren't kidding. 12 catches and 1 TD in 7 Kaepernick starts. 6 catches the last 6 games.
I heard a rumor on some board that it's a personal issue between the two of them. Apparently Davis made some remarks about wishing Smith was still quarterback, and Kaepernick supposedly was pretty cheesed off about it. If that's true, then any time a Green Bay player gets near Kaepernick on Saturday night, they need to let him know they overheard Davis talking **** about him.
Want to see more screen passes like last week! Lots of DuJuan Harris. Hoping Jordy is fit to split! If not, keep Driver activated!
And if we need a 1 yard touchdown, put in the Freezer to punch it in!
Secret Weapon #2--Crabtree, aka "Crabby Appleton." I can see it now ... "Touchdown, Tom Crabtree!"
