I hesitate to even post this because I understand it doesn't really count for anything. It only talks about it at the very end, i've included it in the quotes. Lance Zierlein briefly discusses a potential trade with the Houston Texans for James Jones.

Just came across my twitter feed awhile ago and I thought it was interesting.

Per the Houston Chronicle blog:

quote:
Rumors started circulating around league circles that the Packers were willing to deal James Jones and he is the type of player who could come in and be a major factor in an offense like this.

Personally, I like Jones and if at all possible, I'd like him to stick around. I just figure the Pack has such a logjam at receiver that they think there won't be enough balls to go around.

While I don't have any stats in front of me, it sure looked like Jones cut down on his drops last year after having some soul crushing drops in 2010. He's a good player, he just might not be quite as good as Nelson, Finley, Jennings, and perhaps Cobb. Driver isn't better than Jones at this point, but his leadership and presence are probably why the Pack has chosen to give him one more year (at least).

Gurley is an interesting prospect. I thought he looked like he had trouble separating from DBs when I saw him last year. But supposedly he's a great special teams player and he gives the Packer WR Corps some extra height in the group. Maybe he'll be sort of an upgraded version of what Ruvell Martin was a few years back. Perhaps his solid potential special teams play would be why the Pack would rather have him than Jones.
I see it that Jones was the guy you could get value for because he has a friendly contract and has shows he can be productive. You move him the offense doesn't appear to suffer. You have Jennings, Jordy, and Cobb rising fast. Jones will eventually be the odd man out anyway.

But wouldn't the time to move him have been during the draft? Maybe he's a poker chip in case of a major injury to get a guy, I don't know. It would be nice to see Gurley on the filed developing in games instead of in practice, though. I agree that the kid seems to have some abilities, and you can't teach size.
I wouldn't coronate Gurley just yet. At Packers.com, in the "Inside mini camp" video, AR had plenty of good words for Diondre Borel. Said he had made the most progress from last year. So if GB wants to get 2 new guys on roster at WR, adding a 6th WR and perhaps a trade to open a slot is in order. I wouldn't discount this story just yet. And it would give Jones his chance at playing a major role.
Jones is the most expendable out of that group of Jennings, Driver, Nelson, he and Cobb. Considering the fact they also play Finley as a WR he's like the 3rd or 4th option at best.

If a team wants him as a #2 or #3 and is willing to deal for him I say so be it. Jennings and Nelson are the main options and Finley is not far behind and I think they have to find a way to get Cobb the ball more often. That means Jones isn't going to get a lot of looks and we all know Gurley and Borel are also waiting in the wings.

Make it happen TT
I like Jones, but I think GB needs to keep Gurley and Borel as the 5th and 6th wrs.

Jones is a good receiver but he's probably as good as he's going to get. Gurley has a significant size advantage in the red zone and is reportedly a fantastic ST's player. Borel gets rave reviews for his understanding of the game (Former qb) and can play the slot behind Cobb.

If GB can move Jones I think that's the best option for everybody, including him.
Jones is the new Turd Ferguson for X4 in terms of over-inflated perceived trade value. The guy was available as a FA exactly one year ago and exactly no one tried to sign him. He came back to GB for a bargain price. Why do people think now, after a nondescript year, he'll suddenly garner value? He won't. He's more valuable to GB than he is on the open market. Last year proved that.

I think James Jones can help somebody, but the truth is, you're probably right in terms of other teams not thinking as highly of him as I do.

I look at Jones as a possession receiver +. What I mean by that is, he's pretty good at getting those key first downs and moving the chains, but the + means he is capable of getting deep now and then even though it's not his strength. Those horrendous drops he had in 2010 in a number of big games will continue to haunt his reputation and hurt his value even though he really didn't have those last year.

Edit: Then again if Houston really wants him, how about trading Jones for JJ Watt, J. Joseph, Connor Barwin and a couple of draft picks? You want Jones, pay up Texans!!!! Wink
I'm not down on Jones. I think he's a good player and is valuable to GB. I also think that he's made better than he is by having the best player in football throwing to him and weapons like Jennings, Jordy and Finley on the field with him at the same time. If you put him with an average QB and average offensive talent around him, I think he'd be average.

I also think GM's around the league think the same thing, right or wrong, or someone would have signed him last year or made a move for him during the draft this year. Didn't happen. IMHO that speaks volumes. If someone goes down in TC and some team encounters a need at WR, sure, I can see them sniffing around Jones. But does anyone see him honestly garnering more than a D4?

Saw that clip too. Here are some of his comments:

quote:
“Diondre Borel is a guy that gives us a different look because he plays a similar position of that of Randall Cobb,” Rodgers said in an interview with Packers.com. “Diondre has made as big of jump as anybody from year 1 to year 2. He really made the most of his reps on the scout team last year.”...

“He’s a great teammate, hard worker and he really understands the game,” Rodgers said. “I think he has the luxury of being a quarterback in college. He sees the game through a quarterback’s eyes and that gives him a slight advantage over guys who he’s competing with because he understands timing and progression maybe a little quicker some of the than the other guys.”...

“Diondre has really had one of the top springs from the guys who you were looking for to make a jump,” Rodgers said.

Exactly! Oh, and screw Gurley. If he wants to make the team ahead of Jones he should beat Jones out. Competition is very good and TT will choose the best player when it is all said and done. With the depth on this team TT is going to cut some really good players this year. That's what you want.
I know the new guy is all amped to talk some real football and all....so....I don't see the Packers getting a worthy running back in a deal for Jones. If Jones is traded it will be for draft picks. Like it or not, I think the Pack is going to go into the season with Starks, Green and Sain. Maybe not a group that will set fear into people's hearts...but not a whole lot different from last years when the running game was good enough to get the offense to 15-1 while the defense played very poorly.

If va wants to start a specific thread about the running game we could discuss it more there....this thread however is about trading Jones.

For the record, I hope they don't....but I also want to see Gurly or someone who beats him out get a chance.
I've been wondering if the Pack weren't considering trading JJ when I keep seeing articles about the possibility of McCarthy keeping 6 or even 7 Wr's. I had great hopes for JJ, but I think Gurley definitely makes the roster. Borel I was less sure of, but now I'm reading some good stuff from his peers about his performance at OTA's. So I wouldn't be shocked if JJ went, especially if they could get a stud RB or DE in return.

I think they kept Driver for his locker room presence/veteran leadership.

Last year, the Patriots would have been better off with signing Jones instead of Ochostinko. Miami won't be too happy when they see how ineffective 85 is.

I actually hope they do trade him. I'm sick of his whining. He is never going to get much of a chance on this team. There are too many receivers. He hit free agency and didn't get what he wanted and he crawled back to The Packers. Now, he is complaining again. You would think he would be open to a trade if that meant more playing time/chances, unless he really does want to stay with this quality organization.
