"...the Jags ranked 21st in red-zone touchdown percentage last year and their five turnovers in the red zone were tied for the most in the league."

Fabio sucks

Looks like the Lions lost their kicker for the year due to a hamstring tear requiring surgery. They did sign the UFL guy earlier for competition.

Edit, looks this was already covered in the lie downs thread, sorry for the duplicate

The writer is brutally sarcastic!

"6. TE Cam Latu

Caught two passes today, which is outstanding for him. But right after he made the second catch, he fumbled and the defense recovered, which is not outstanding. If getting open, catching the ball and holding onto it were skills that didn't matter for a tight end, he'd be elite."

And that's only one!

I have bet every team in the NFC West to win the division EXCEPT the Niners.

They've been asked about Super Bowl losers regressing and the players are all saying the right thing. I just have a gut feeling they aren't winning their division this season.

Aaron Schatz has their predictions out. The top 12 teams....EIGHT of them are from the AFC. That means at least ONE of those teams in the AFC is not making the playoffs.

The top 4 teams predicted in the NFC are the Niners, Cowboys, Lions and Packers.

I would have the Eagles in there before the Cowboys.  IHMO the 49ers at some point will have one of those years where the injury bug hits and they regress.

The Lions?  Really good team but I strongly believe coach mouth breather will be their downfall with going beyond aggressive and being reckless.

My thoughts on the Lions....

Jared Goff....is he going to play like 2023 again  this season?? Better?!?!!? I expect him to have an average season. Less than 2023.

I also think the Bears have a really good defense. The NFC North isn't going to be easy to win for the Lions or the Packers

SF seems to be on a cycle where they get to the SB or NFCCG one year, get racked with injuries the next, giving them high draft position, then restock with top talent and swing back up again the following year.  I really want to see what kind of money they give Purdy and the ripple effects that has on the rest of the roster that is up for new contracts.

CHI does have a top D.  And an offense stocked with pretty good talent at the skill positions and an improving OL.  That team will go as far as the QB can take them.

I think the Eagles will be better this year.  They’ve added some nice pieces in the offseason and Kellen Moore as OC should help Jalen Hurts get back on track.

On paper, I think SF and Detroit are clearly the two best teams in the NFC but I wonder if they can both get back to the NFCCG as I still don’t trust Purdy and Dan Campbell is still a meathead.

Purdy has been throwing a lot of INTs in Training Camp.

He's trying to throw deeper than he did last year but that 7th round noodle arm doesn't have it to throw the deep outs. If he had the arm, there is no friggin way he lasts until the final pick.

His best bet is to stay within the confines of the offense and dink & dunk his way to success with the weapons he has.

Savage picked 6 the Cowboys but couldn't hang onto the one from Purdy. I believe the Packers defense had 2 dropped INTs. Such as life.

I can't wait until the Niners have to pay Purdy $60M

Well that's the $60M question, quiz kid.  DO they pay him that?  They've got some other big names coming up for renewals in the same window.  SF could call his agent's bluff and tell him to go find another team that is willing to pay him that.  He is so tied to Shanahat's system and benefiting from maybe best offensive group in the NFL, I'm not sure how many other teams could get as much out of him.  Or even enough to justify $60M.  Not to say other teams don't overpay for less-than-elite QB's.  SF's biggest problem is they have nothing to replace him with if they don't want to pay up.

They'll pay.....they paid Jimmy G.....they gave up a boatload of draft capital to draft Trey Lance and pay him high draft pick money.

Some other QB desperate team would definitely pay him too.

The funny thing is, IMO, the kid doesn't have an NFL arm but he's producing in SF.

Calling my shot RN....the Niners will never win a Super Bowl with Purdy at QB

60 million for Purdy would lock the Niners into mediocrity for years. Honestly, how hard would it be to replace him? If Purdy went down in training camp tomorrow, their other QBs are Joshua Dobbs, Brandon Allen, and Tanner Mordecai. I would bet they'd go get a guy like Tannehill (who is still a free agent), plug him in, and win 12+ games again.

If they could have, Shanahan would have replaced Purdy with Cousins in a heartbeat, but they can't absorb the cap hit and keep the real stars on the team.

The Niners are too smart an organization to guarantee Purdy 200 million.

This was my last point.  As I said, other teams have paid non-elite QB's elite money but none of those teams will have the coach and roster Purdy currently has.  IOW, what other team is going to pay Purdy top money, look at their coach and roster and say "yeah, this guy can get us over the hump".

Maybe it's just my continued disbelief in how much some QB's get paid.

I don't think SF can just plug any mediocre QB into their system and be a SB contender.  Purdy works for them because of his timing, accuracy and a decent amount of moxy in crunch time.  He just lacks the big arm to get him over the top when they need that from him.  He's Jared Goff that doesn't melt when it gets too hot.  SF is kind of in the same place LAR/McVey were in a couple years ago with Goff.  LAR traded for the bigger armed Stafford and voila.  Could Cousins have done the same in SF?  His big game reputation isn't encouraging but he would have had a much stronger team around him.  I don't know that there is another "Stafford" out there for SF to poach.

I'll take that bet!

We'll see...Purdy is saying and doing all the right things and the Niners don't like paying their players. Had holdouts from Nick Bosa, Kittle & Deebo before they caved to pay them. Other teams were willing to pay Aiyuk what the Niners are not, but then the Niners wanted the Trey Lance deal back to trade Aiyuk and every team laughed at them. Aiyuk is not happy only making $14M this year.

This the same smart organization that drafted Trey Lance, Solomon Thomas (now on the Jets) & Reuben Foster??

They fleeced the Bears with the Trubisky pick and everyone said it at the time it happened. Then did nothing with the draft capital. Then gave up the farm for Trey Lance and were lucky to get a serviceable QB with the last pick in the draft.

They had their shot last year....

I'm going out on a limb.....not only will they not win the division but I got them missing the playoffs entirely and if they do make it, they'll lose the first game they play.

@Pikes Peak - Mark it down! 😉😁

Purdy is great as long as McCaffrey, Deebo and Kittle are all healthy. That's three tremendous security blankets. Most QB's don't have one and he has three. We've all seen what that offense looks like when he's down to one security blanket. It isn't great with two, either.

I still believe the the 9ers have gotten by with smoke and mirrors with Purdy.   Things could go off the rails for them in a hurry because Trent Williams their all world LT is 36, CMC does have an injury history, Kittle is on the wrong side of 30 and Aiyuk is more the likely going to be gone.

But, knowing that team those phuckers will continue to win even with those issues.

They're still a talented team with a talented coach...but they are past their apex for this window. And their apex was losing 2 Super Bowls, putting them at 5-3 all time in the Big Game. The next chapter will be a slow descent - still a solid team but no longer the NFC favorites as the vet talent ages and demands to get paid.

They've also lost some front office talent (netting them 3rd round comp picks), but they still lost some brain power

The young players SF would have drafted didn't happen because of the costly Lance trade-up and other draft missteps... leaving a top-heavy squad, without fresh new stars coming up behind them. If the NFC was the card game WAR; they used to be an ACE, right now they're a Queen... and soon they'll be a 10.

more here from Jason at OTC

https://overthecap.com/brandon-aiyuk-seeks-trade

"If the 49ers were willing to make Aiyuk the highest paid receiver earlier, you would probably have been looking at a contract worth about $28.25 million a year with the first four years of the contract guaranteed. It is hard to say what that number would be now but my guess would be that Aiyuk would be looking for a contract that is a legit $30 million per year.

Both of those numbers may be questionable for San Francisco and they could be lower when you look at their roster structure. The 49ers currently rank 4th in the NFL in spending and they rank 5th in spending for 2025. These numbers are in spite of having a QB who earns pennies (his salary is so low it actually doesn’t even count in the offseason salary cap in 2024) and will be in line for a massive raise in 2025 when he is extension eligible.  Their roster is not really designed for multiple cuts in 2025 to free up significant cash"

I wonder if Davante Adams wants to go back to (east) Palo Alto as part of the 49ers - Steelers trade. The hold up is allegedly some team taking the Steelers pick(s) in exchange for a WR they will ship to SF as part of a 3-way.
