Mike McCarthy Practice Report: Woodson out against Vikings
Written by
Weston Hodkiewicz

Packers coach Mike McCarthy spoke to the media following practice on Wednesday evening. Here are some highlights from his news conference:

-Jordy Nelsons, Tom Crabtree, Jerel Worthy, CJ Wilson, Alex Green and Davon House returned to practice.

-Jordy Nelson looked good today. I’m curious to see how he feels tomorrow.

-You hope he can just go back in. I don’t think anyone goes back seamlessly. It’s always an adjustment. I think it’s important for us to be smart with Jordy.

-Charles Woodson is out for Sunday. It’s clearly based on doctor’s recommendations. Hoped to have him back. Fourth week he’s been practicing. Game he’d like to play in but based on Dr. McKenzie’s recommendation.

-Josh Sitton has a concussion, but hopeful he’ll be cleared tomorrow.

-Antoine Winfield, I’ve talked on him time-and-time again. He’s clearly one of my favorite players. I’ve always had a great respect for his game. He’s an outstanding tackler.

-I would think we’ll finally have to make decision on players who are healthy being inactive.

-Practice was different. It’s part of the plan the last week of the season. Will have full padded Thursday practice.

-C.J. Wilson, tomorrow will be a big day for him. That’s one of the reasons it’ll be good for our linemen to go through padded practices.

-Randall Cobb, he hurt his ankle and knee in game. The plan for Randall is he’ll be limited Wednesday and Thursday, and go through testing Friday.

-Mason Crosby has flu-like symptoms. Sent him home.

-I’ll say this about our medical staff. We have Purell throughout the building. We all have kids. We know the challenge of that. Dr. Gray does a full round with when someone has a case of.

-Dietrich-Smith’s knee isn’t a concern.

-When we were game-planning, we weren’t sure what his availability will be. Plan to use all three backs against Vikings.

-Those guys are all going to play. Dezman Moses and Erik Walden are both playing good football. Frank Zombo played probably his best game on special teams. I like the fact we have a four-man rotation here.

-They have to do something about (the Pro Bowl). I think everyone is in agreement about that. It’s clearly a drop-off in game-day performance. Something needs to be done. Not sure what the answer is. What the options are, but there was no comparison to coaching in it after the 2008 season.

Gotta be something with it either not healing as fast as they wanted OR maybe there is some ligament damage that isn't quite healed. He's obviously well enough to practice. Surprised there isnt some of harness or brace he could wear to protect him more.
The Woodson situation is a letdown, but if they can get the rest of those guys back I'll be very happy.

I usually consider myself an optimist. I'm not saying games don't make me wildly nervous, but I try to think positively when I can. I feel positive going into this week. However, I just envisioned Crosby attempting a game winning kick in the Metrodome and almost threw up in my mouth. That's no lie. I hope like hell this game doesn't come down to a field goal.

The timing of Woodson is going to be a problem. I don't want him coming back for his first game in the playoffs. As MM said, "I don't think anyone goes back in seamlessly."

MM made it very clear a few weeks back that he wanted Woody to get some playing time in the last couple regular season games. At this point, it's probably best to just keep him out unless GB suffers an injury in the secondary at Minny or in the playoffs.
Even if he is a bit rusty, he's still going to be good enough to take some plays from MD Jennings and/or Jerron McMillian in the playoffs. The guy is a 15 year veteran on a short list of the best defensive players in the history of the NFL after all.
There will be certain situations where Woodson will be perfect once we hit the playoffs.

It'll be all hands on deck once we hit January. If he can play at all, he'll be in there.

It's payback time this Sunday.

Payback for all the the Vikings put us through in 2009, the tampering, everything.

Payback for the 90% of their fanbase that is a bunch of douchebags

It's payback time to knock them out of the playoffs

It's payback time

Anytime anyone around here is feeling any empathy or any remote feelings of anything other then hatred for these a-holes let me remind you:

I could go on...
I'm glad Woodson isn't playing. Not only does he get extra rest, but it's a real uknown what his role will be when he comes back. We have young CBs playing really good ball, but Woodson is far too talented to be on the bench so how do you use him? Not knowing what Capers has planned for Wood HAS to be worrying NFC OC's.
I can't even begin to explain the depth of my disgust for the Vikings and more specifically their fan base. A born and bred Wisconsonite, I made the mistake of going to school up there. I ended up staying 11 years total because of a job and got to know the makeup of Viking fans very well along with the obnoxious local media. The jealousy they have for the Packers and their fans is deep rooted and has translated itself into a whiny-little tough guy on the block mentality. The abuse they would dish out to Packer fans when they were up (not even necessarily when the Packers were down) is legendary in my mind. Some of my fondest football memories I must admit are not only of epic Packer victories, but also of epic Viking losses. The NFCCG against Atlanta and NY were truly great to watch while living in Minneapolis.
4 going to the Vikings only cemented the disdain for me. The ribbing was merciless, and their last second victory over SF at the beginning of the season began for me one of the longest football nightmares I've experienced. I treated the NFCCG against NO that year as my Super Bowl. I don't remember ever being so nervous for a game before in my life. I actually went out and bought a Saints jersey and tshirt and listened to NO radio all week. The way that game began to play out was like a ritualistic killing for me, but obviously ended in a fashion beyond my wildest expectations. You couple that with the Psckers winning the SB the next year and a better fairy tale couldn't have been written.
I ended up marrying a MN girl who could give 2 flips about football which is great but doesn't shield me from her obnoxious Viking family members. I always stay quiet, but they always prod which will undoubtably lead to a blow up on my end some day. This leads me to my last point as I've become winded writing this hate manifesto...."Minnesota Nice" doesn't exist and never has. Rather the state is comprised if a bunch of people who for the most part were either born and bred there, or moved back because they missed white suburban life. They like people who think and talk like they do and don't appreciate outsiders. Heaven forbid if you are from Wisconsin.
So I continue to lead my life as a Packer fan and Viking hater in suburban white WI (my hypocrisy goes only so far) always tailgating drivers I see on the roads with MN license plates and hope that this year the Packers can add to their losing legacy and add to the frustrations of my in-laws and Viking fans in Anoka, Andover, Blaine, Eden Prairie, Minetonka, Woodbury......

DAMN, looks like you did a good job of explaining away.
That was 25 years of frustration being unleashed. I'm sorry to put you all through it. I'll be damned if that didn't get my heart ticking now though. I have deep rooted issues when it comes to MN. I know.
Tavis - that might have been the best post I've ever read here. Growing up in NW Wisconsin, working in Duh-luth for many years and being force-fed Viking coverage from the MN tv and radio stations were pure hell for me growing up and in my early adulthood.

Very glad to be living closer to Lambeau now.

Don't apologize. I'm right there with you. I grew up in Viking country and all of my in-laws are Viking fans as well. They're a bunch of d-bags, plain and simple. Knocking their asses out of the playoffs is going to be sweet.

Most Packer fans hate the Bears more than the Vikes. I can at least respect the brand of football the Bears play. For the most part, they always have a tough-nosed team and offer a physical brand of football. They've been successful, won championships and have a long, rich history in the league. The Vikes on the other hand haven't won jack ****, are noted for a d-bag fan base and have a clear history of choking when it matters most.... Yet they continue to run their mouths. My hatred for that franchise runs deep....very deep.

**** them.

Vikings play by play guy Paul Allen says the Vikes woud beat the Packers 7 of 10 times on a neutral field

Neutral field? Huh? Aside from the SB when the hell do NFL teams play on neutral fields?
Paul Allen is unintentionally hilarious. He throws out more superlatives when talking about the Vikings than the Genus Book of World Records. Do you know that the Vikings have the Best D-line, best tight end, best .......

Oh well, it's his niche. He knows how to play to his fan base.
Considering the Vikings are 0-5 on a neutral field (4 Super Bowls and I'm including the beating the 2010 Vikings took in the Gopher Bowl), I'm going to call delusional BS on Paul Allen, again.
Having moved up here 18 months ago, I haven't had the run-ins with the d bag Queen fans. But, I have heard way too much of PA, that guy is a total rube, and d bag!!!!! I vow to never to go to Canterbury becuase he calls the races, god forbid I ever see him on the streets, I'll be in jail.
I haven't listened to the awful KFAN station in almost 2 years. I lifted my ban this week to listen to these dopes spout off about the Queens and rip the Packers. I will tune in again next week after the Packers knock them out of the playoffs.

They were going on this morning how Rodgers has been sacked 19 times in 4 games at the dump. They really didn't comment much on his 3 straight 300 yard games and 9 TDs to 1 INT in those games for some weird reason.

You'd be hard pressed to know that the Packers won the last game by 9 points listening to this garbage. Evidently they beat the Packers in every facet of the game.
I honestly like some of the KFAN personalities....except when they bash the Packers and Wisconsin. PA is by far the worse person on their radio station. Just listened to him a little as I ran to the grocery store....he is playing the "hate" the Packers card. No wonder the fans at the dome can be so tough on Packer fans...its a mentality that is constantly reinforced. I'm sure it is kind of a chicken/egg thing...but wouldn't it be nice if the fans could respect each others teams.

(and yes, all Viking fans reading this...I know it goes both ways) But, somebody tell me, do the Green Bay stations have personalities talking about how they and the Packers hate the Vikings? or do they have "Ten Thousand Lake Diaries" making fun of Minnesota?

He's a good guy just doing his schtick. Met him a few times along with Dubay before he tweaked out. I haven't listened to KFAN since 2005 so I can't speak to the idiocy of the past 7 years.
I've heard he's a good guy too, and I agree that's his schtick. I think he also knows a lot of his listeners are GB fans and it helps ratings to get us worked up. That said, I still find him annoying as all hell.
It seems the Viking fans I know also are very confident about this game, which I find perplexing. Besides HFA, the Packers beat them pretty decisively 5 weeks ago without many of their key players and haven't loss since then. I admit AP is impressive, but I fail to see why their fans are so confident.
