Green Bay — The following is a summary of coach Mike McCarthy's pre-practice press conference on Wednesday:

(On Sam Shields) Getting better. Sam is going to do some work today at practice.

(On David Bakhtiari) Getting better. Hopefully he can do some work today at practice.

(On Bryan Bulaga) Bryan feels like he’s getting better too. I talk to him Monday or Tuesday. It’s going to take the full week for those guys.

(On playing without starting tackles) I think any time you put together game plans, you look at matchups and potential issues during the course of a game. Sometimes you may go in a little more optimistic or a little more pessimistic. … When you’re in that situation of helping a tackle or helping both tackles, that was obviously the case in Arizona. We didn’t get that done, and obviously you saw the results of some those plays.

(On Teddy Bridgewater) He’s definitely one of the young, ascending quarterbacks in the league. Very impressed with him when I see him live. Very elusive, very experienced quarterback, you can tell he’s played a lot of football. … He’s cadence, his command is definitely ahead of the curve. I’m impressed with his mannerisms and mechanics at the line of scrimmage. He looks comfortable in Norv (Turner’s) system.

(On big-game experience) I’m not really looking at the past. We get to walk through a great past each and every day when we walk through the door. We’re focused on beating the Vikings. This is the 2015 Green Bay Packers trying to win a division championship.

(On the importance of the division) You can make a case that division games really count as two wins. I think that’s the common goal of every NFL team as you prepare for the season. … This is the game that when you looked at it when the schedule came out in the spring, you thought, ‘Hey, we’ll probably be playing for something.’ And that’s certainly the case.

(On playing for the division title) I think any time you have experience from the past your older players can share that with younger players. But once again, this is one game. This is exclusive to the players on this team.

(On the mentality of the team) We worked Monday. I feel like we did everything we needed to do Monday coming off the Arizona experience and really had very good, quality time as far as the Minnesota preparation. We’re a little bit further into our planning than we would be in a normal week. I feel like our guys are locked in.

(On the change in play caller influencing the QB) I think in the game of football it’s all about adjustments and emphasis and change. That’s what a season brings. That’s why you put so much time into the planning stages.

(On sticking with Davante Adams) We do play time reports as a coaching staff. Obviously the week of preparation affects how the outlook is each and every week. As far as who plays, how they play and how much they play, that’s all part of the preparation.

(On the tight end position) Well, it’s a long season. You go through the ebb and flows of it. Game-planning process has changed some in the last four weeks. Richard, his opportunities have not been as much as he was early in the season when we were exclusively with a tight end on the field. We’ve been going with two backs and certain things. That’s probably the biggest change.

(On concern about not showing up until the playoffs) I have no concern.

(On Eddie Lacy) Eddie is always looked at as a primary contributor when we do our game plans. I would say his contributions are needed. Eddie, James, it’s important. Any time you have players, the quarterback touches the ball each and every down. Running backs are hopefully touching it 35 times a game. So Eddie is a big part of the game preparation.

(On Lacy’s improvement in recent weeks) Opportunities. There’s things that went on earlier in the year, and hopefully we’re past all that.

(On Lacy’s ribs) Doing good. Getting better.

(On defending Adrian Peterson) We played very good run defense that day in Minnesota. I think we all realize Adrian will get his touches come Sunday night. That’s what we’re preparing for. Obviously, stopping the run is of high importance.

I have no idea how the Packers (AR & MM) think they can "turn on" what they haven't haven't been able to produce on any consistent basis this season.  However, if they succeed, and that is the biggest 'IF" I can remember, we could be looking at that SB we now don't think we have a chance at.

Demovsky: A total of six Packers players did not practice on Wednesday: David Bakhtiari (ankle); Mike Daniels (hamstring), Justin Perillo (hamstring), B.J. Raji (concussion), Jayrone Elliott (quad) and Mike Neal (unknown). Packers were indoors despite having an outdoor game on Sunday vs. the Vikings.

Bulaga and Shields not on the DNP list!

We should also keep in mind that Abby is, for all intents and purposes, a rookie this year. He lost all of last season before it even started. Obviously he was there taking mental reps, but he's still adjusting to the physical side of the NFL. I think McCarthy is easing him in to playing time, putting a lot of pressure on a young player can cause problems (ala Adams).

Not criticism this poster or post but more of a general observation. If AR goes to the podium and acts like he did after the Oakland game (saying they have still have some problems they need to fix), some people criticize him for being sullen and pessimistic. If he says what he did after the Cardinals game (saying that they they'll be fine), then he's criticized for being unrealistic.

It would be interesting to see what MM and AR really think, but they are not going to go to the podium and say "some guys on this team really suck and we have no chance in hell of making a playoff run"

I agree and wonder what is being said privately too.

Interesting look at how the cards /Vikes played us defensively. Gotta believe that we will not see the 2 high safety look much this time vs. Vikes. Really jumps out just how much the Cards were unconcerned with us beating them deep.

One way to beat it is to try to max protect and throw deep to make the CBs defend WRs in the one on one, but they'd have to play Janis or Abbrederis to do so. Cobb's too small and Adams is not going to do anything. Jones can't run away from me at this point and Richard Rodgers can't run anyway from my 75 year old father.

Vikes fans are jumping into the overly optimist barrel with both feet. The giddiness on Rube Chat is over the top. They are setting themselves up for a Wyle E. Coyote cliff fall of epic proportions!

according to the Viking fans, Packers never win unless the refs help them. According to them the reason the Cardinals won was that the refs finally called the game fair. Viking fans have to be the most delusional fans on the planet. I can respect Bear fans. But Viking fans should be put in a closet and never heard.

Anyone on this site that is hoping for a GB loss is dead to me. Anyone hoping for a GB loss in hopes of avoiding a rematch with the Vikings is dead to me. Anyone hoping for a GB loss in order to travel to Washington is dead to me.

It's the Vikings. Eff them. If GB loses because they suck then they lose because they suck. But every ounce of me being want's GB to curb stomp the ever living **** out of them and then do it again the following weekend.

How can any Packer fan not be in love with the idea of beating Minny to win the North then beating them again a week later to end their season? That's fairly tale stuff.

Whether or not this team can realistically do it? Whatever. I certainly don't give GB a punchers chance after the wild card round. But we'll cross that bridgewater later.

I think you're being a bit excessive here Chilli. Those of us who were born in WI and truly love the Packers know the Bears are our most hated rival. While I appreciate your passion and I think its admirable, save your push for 2016 in Soldier and back in GB when we will right the wrongs of this season. Go Pack Go!

Fact is Minny and the fan base are giddy to get a shot at the title. They're in!!!

Green Bay and the fan base are not loving any of 2015. Another playoff appearance. Whatever.

Easy to forget how hard it is to make it to the playoffs when it happens every year.

I had a pleasant queens fan telling me how they were going all the way this year.  He had been a loser since he could ever remember.  He was going to win this year.

I politely disagreed.  Felt bad for the guy.

No wait I didn't, I am mocking him here at least.

Not at all excessive.  While it's certainly true that the Packers' most important rival is the Bears, if you're rooting for anything other than complete destruction of the Purple Pukes then you don't know sh*t from soft meat and are not a true Packer fan.  Those of us who do truly love the Packers see no need to "save our push".  We'll bring it every week!  Go Pack Go!

Green Bay - The following is a summary of Packers coach Mike McCarthy's pre-practice press conference Thursday morning:

  • (On Shields and Bulaga) Making progress. We'll see how they respond. I think Bryan, Sam and David we won't know until the end of the week.
  • (On B.J. Raji) He’s still in the protocol.
  • (On Shields) He is at the back end of the protocol.
  • (On Matthews going back-to-back games without a tackle) Clay Matthews is clearly our most disruptive player. Statistics don't tell the whole story. I don't think it's an indication of anything.
  • (On Minnesota OL) Best OLs are the ones that play together. That’s something if you look at teams that are successful, offensive lines that play 16 weeks or so together, there’s a direct correlation to that. That's definitely been the case in Minnesota.
  • (On OL injuries) Definitely for most part we've handled. Last week we didn't. Just some things we were trying to get done we did not. Something we'll learn from. Most flexible group we've had. Like I've state
  • (On Sitton) He's been on this same plan four or five weeks. Just making sure he gets what he needs to be ready. He has the trust of the coaches.
  • (On Guion) Did a lot of good things. Mike Pennel did a lot of good things, too. One strength of our team has been our defensive line. We’ll see how B.J. gets through the week.
  • (On special teams) On coverage units have played well. We'll be challenged. Look at the last game, the impact of their special teams was evident. It's going to be a great battle. Ball placement will be critical this week. Coverage units will be a part of it. …
  • (On special teams) I feel better about it this year than last year if you’re looking for a comparable.
  • (On weather) Technically it's January football. Handling football is critical. Punting and kicking and handling it is key.
  • (On defending Adrian Peterson) Adrian is a great player. He’s an impact player. He’s a focal point of the defense regardless of who they compete against. It’s something he’s dealt with his whole football life. That’ll be the case Sunday night.

  • (On Tretter) JC is an excellent football player. You think about what he’s done this year. He’s playing center, playing tackle. I don’t know how many guys can do that. We're always looking for things for him. His flexibility is critical. Just his flexibility and being able to backup every position on the offensive line.

And that's it for McCarthy.

What does " Back End of Protocol mean?

Concussion protocol has a number of different phases which the player has to pass a measurement test to get to the next phase. In short "back end" means he is nearly completely cleared.
